… and after having dug through it they let down the mat on which the paralytic lay when Jesus saw their faith he said to the paralytic child your sins are forgiven now some of the scribes were sitting there questioning in their hearts why does this fellows speak in this way. It is blasphemy. Who can forgive sins but God alone? And once Jesus perceived in his spirit that they were discussing these questions among themselves, he said to them, why do you raise such questions in your hearts? Which is easier to say to the paralytic, your sins are forgiven or to say stand up take your mat and walk but so that they may know that the son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins and he said to the paralytic I say to you stand up take your mat and go home and he stood up immediately and took the mat and went out before all of them so that they were all amazed and glorified God saying we have never seen anything like this that's enough for our reading this morning brothers and sisters I would like to tag this text if the youth are listening you've got a friend in me can you look over and tell your neighbor at Friendship West, you've got a friend in me. …
… and when they had made an opening they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay and when Jesus saw their faith he said to the paralytic son your sins are forgiven now some of the scribes were sitting there questioning in their hearts why does this man speak like this he's blaspheming who can forgive sins but God alone and immediately Jesus perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves said to them, Why do you question these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, Your sins are forgiven, or to say, Rise, take up your bed and walk? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. He said to the paralytic, I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home. And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, we never saw anything like this. A brief prayer. Father, what we know not, teach us. What we have not, give us. …
… And when they had broken through, they let the bed on which the paralytic was lying. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, listen to what he says, Son, your sins are forgiven you. Now, first of all, I love these four guys. I want friends like that. I mean, this guy is totally helpless, but these four friends love this guy so much that all they can think of is, we've got to get this guy in front of Jesus. Whatever it takes. That's what he needs more than anything else. We've got to get him in front of Jesus. And I love that kind of holy determination. I hope you have that with your parents, uncles, friends. I've got to get them exposed to the gospel. so they come to the house, but they have a problem, right, can't get in the door, doors jam, everybody's just standing around, they can't even fit everybody in, it is a stampede in that house, it's a swarm, so they come to the house, there's a long line outside, I don't know about you, but I hate lines, I mean, I come from the land of the 405 freeway in Disneyland. It's like we do lines. And it's like when I see lines, like forget it. …

… they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, this is really important. I need you to remember this scripture. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, son, your sins are forgiven. So Benny was paralyzed. And back then, that created some feelings around paralyzed people. Like, people pitied them. They felt sorry for them. So you could say, you'd be like, man, poor Benny, right? Poor Benny. Everybody say, poor Benny. Like, he can't walk. In Spanish, you would say, pobrecito. Benito. It rhymes, right? But what we're going to see is that he might have been poor in health, but he was rich in relationships. He had four friends that didn't pity him, but they loved him. They cared for him. And I want to show you two truths. And here's the first one. A loving church carries burdens. A loving church carries burdens. So picture the scene. Okay. The house is packed. I mean, from the windows to the walls, there's no room, right? And everybody's trying to get something from Jesus. Everybody wants something for him. But verse three says this, some men came bringing to Jesus, a paralyzed man carried by four of them. Notice what his friends didn't say and what they didn't do. They didn't say, oh, Benny, I'll be praying for you. They didn't say, oh, Benny, I hope you find some help. No, what did they do? They picked him up, carried him, and brought him to …
… we pray these things in Jesus holy name amen this evening we're going to be in Mark chapter 2 verses 1 through 12 but and you can start flipping there right now. But before we read through the text, I want to briefly give some context of where we are at in Mark's gospel. So once you flip to chapter 2, if you can flip back one page to chapter 1, we'll situate ourselves and then get going. You see there in chapter 1, verse 1, that Mark starts right away by telling you what he is doing. He says, The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, And he shows that Jesus is the fulfillment of this prophecy in Isaiah, specifically as John the Baptist is the forerunner to the Messiah. You see there in verse 9 through 12 that Jesus is baptized. He's tempted by Satan. And then in verse 14, Jesus begins his public ministry in the region of Galilee by proclaiming the gospel of God. …
… and when they had dug an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic was lying. And Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic, "'Son, your sins are forgiven.'" But some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, "'Why does this man speak this way? He is blaspheming. Who can forgive sins but God alone?' Immediately, Jesus, aware in His Spirit that they were reasoning that way within themselves, said to them, "'Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts?' Which is easier to say to the paralytic, "'Your sins are forgiven?' or to say, "'Get up and pick up your pallet and walk.' But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins," He said to the paralytic, I say to you, get up, pick up your pallet, and go home. And he got up and immediately picked up the pallet and went out in the sight of everyone, so that they were all amazed and were glorifying God, saying, We have never seen anything like this. …
We're going to the book of Mark. Familiar text, but hoping that God can speak a fresh word with something that is familiar that we know well. Mark chapter 2, verses 1 through 12. I'm reading for your hearing from the God's word version. Yours may be a little different, but we believe God's going to bring it all together. Is that all right? the bible says several days later jesus came back to capernaum the report went out that he was home many people had gathered there was no room left even in the front of the door jesus was speaking god's word to them and four men came to him carrying a paralyzed man since they could not bring him to jesus because of the crowd they made an opening in the roof over the place where jesus was. Then they lowered the cot on which the paralyzed man was lying and when Jesus saw their faith he said to the man friend your sins are forgiven. Some experts in Moses's teaching were sitting there and they thought why does he talk this way? He's dishonoring God. Who besides God can forgive sins? And at once Jesus knew inwardly what they were thinking and he asked them why do you have these thoughts? Is it easier to say to this paralyzed man your sins are forgiven or to say get up pick up your cot and walk I want you to know that the son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins then he said to the paralyzed man I'm telling you to get up pick up your cot and go …
