If you were to read the gospel of Mark all the way through from chapter four into chapter five without a break, you would see the contrast. You have in one town a crowd of people who can't wait to see Jesus get out of town and then you have another crowd on the other side of the lake here who is so glad that he came back. So one group wants nothing to do with him. One group never wants him to leave. And I've discovered that's pretty much how the world is. you either hate Jesus or you love him. Jesus even said, you're either for me or you're against me. You either help gather or you actually scatter. So the crowd is divided. One crowd here is happy to see him return. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better, she grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak because, she thought, if I just touch his clothes, I'll be healed. Immediately her bleeding stopped, and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, who touched my clothes? You see people crowding against you, his disciples answered, and yet you ask, who touched me? But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. And then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and trembled with fear, told him the whole truth. He said to her, daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering. And while Jesus was still speaking, some men came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. Your daughter is dead, they said. …
