… all of this is coming straight from God's word. Consistently save part of your income. The C stands for consistently save part of your income. Remember Proverbs chapter six, verses six through eight. Solomon said, go to the aunt, O sluggard, observe her ways and be wise, which having no chief officer or ruler prepares her food in summer and then gathers her provision in the harvest. Even an ant understands that the harvest it enjoys in the summertime, the bountiful food won't last forever. So it sets aside some of the food in the summer and in the fall to prepare for the wintertime where there is no food. And the same thing is true for us. If we're wise, we're going to set aside some of our income for future needs. How much income should we set aside? Some financial planners say that we ought to set aside at least 10 to 15% of our income for our retirement needs. And then more than that to set aside for emergencies, college educations, and other big ticket items. How much money you set aside really isn't our call to make. …

… which having no guide, overseer or ruler, provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in harvest. God says, you better learn how to work like an ant works. Nothing wrong with work. Nothing wrong with having material goods. What does this mean then when the Lord Jesus Christ says, lay not up for yourselves treasure upon earth? Actually, you don't see it in the English, but he uses the word treasure twice in that sentence. What it literally says is, stop treasuring treasure. Stop treasuring treasure. That is when, when your money possesses you rather than you possessing it. When you see wealth as an end in itself rather than a means to an end, you have begun to treasure, treasure, and when you treasure, treasure, you really don't have any treasure because it can be lost. As a matter of fact, our Lord is not saying don't have a treasure. Our Lord is saying, do have a treasure. Just make certain it's a real treasure you have. …

Procrastination
Jonathan Edwards

In some respects we ought to carry ourselves, as though we know we should not live another day, and should improve every day as if it were the last. Particularly, we should live every day as conscientiously and as holily as if we knew it were the last. We should be as careful every day to avoid all sin, as if we knew that that night our souls should be required of us. We should be as careful to do every duty which God requires of us, and take as much care that we have a good account to give to our Judge, of our improvement of that day, as if we concluded that we must be called to give an account before another day. But in many other respects, we are not obliged to behave ourselves as though we concluded that we should not live to another day. If we had reason to conclude that we should not live another day, some things would not be our duty which now are our duty. As for instance, in such a case it would not be the duty of any person to make provision for his temporal subsistence during another day: to neglect which, as things now are, would be very imprudent and foolish, as the consequences would show, if every man were to act in this manner. If so, it would never be man’s duty to plough or sow the field, or to lay up for winter; but these things are man’s duty; as Prov. vi. 6. “Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.” And chap. x. 5,. &c. “He that gathereth in the summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest, is a son that causeth shame.” And many other places might be mentioned. …
