… of death and Hades. Revelation chapter 1 and verse 18. He leaves the devil shaking in the abyss, a defeated devil, proving that Jesus is the Lord. Not just of the heavens and not just of the earth, but as the apostle Paul pointed out, the Lord of those under the earth. … Do not be afraid. I'm the first and the last and the living one. And I was dead, and behold, I'm alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades. John, you have nothing to be afraid of. You belong to me. You belong to me. I am the first and the last meaning I dominate history. I am alive, and I'm in charge of who dies, and I'm in charge of who lives. You have nothing to fear. This is the kind of reaction that someone would have if they really saw the Lord. Not like some of the foolishness that you hear from fraudulent testimonies on that supposed vision. So the Lord encourages him that he's okay. Even under this immense vision, he's okay. He's okay. Because Jesus decides who lives and who dies. And John will live. And more than that, verse 19 gives him his commission. Therefore, write the things which you have seen, the things which are, and the things which will take place after these things. …

Christ Is All (Hebrews 2:9-18)
John MacArthur, 2023-04-07

… Far better to depart and be with Christ. Now, Revelation 1.18 says, Christ says, I have the keys to death. There's one more. glory that belongs to our great Savior. He is our sympathizer. Verse 16, surely he does not give help to angels. There's no redemption for angels, no salvation for angels. They are holy permanently. They never die. They never die. He doesn't give help to angels, but He gives help to the descendant of Abraham. Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation or satisfaction for the sins of the people. And then verse 18, for since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted. Amazing. He was made like his brother in all things. He was hungry. He was thirsty. He was overcome with weariness. He slept. He was taught. He grew. He loved. He was astonished. He marveled. He was glad. He was sad. He was angry. …

… If you've got your Bible in your hand or device near you, if you join in with me in Revelation chapter one, verse 17 and 18, And it is my sincere prayer that you don't have any difficulty finding the book of Revelation. In Revelation chapter 1, reading out of the New International Version of God's Word, the Apostle John says, When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. And I hold the keys of death and Hades. Do not fear. I am the first and the last. I am the living one. I was dead and now I am alive forever and evermore. and I have the keys of death and Hades in my hand. On this Easter Sunday morning, I want to encourage you that Christ is alive forevermore. …

The First and the Last
Tim Keller, 2008-06-29 · Scripture reading

… Don't be afraid. I have the keys of death and hell. Hades, I died for you. I went to hell for you. I was judged for you. So now you can have a touch. So now you can be comforted. So now you can live in my presence. And bit by bit by bit, even in this world, get more and more use for the joy of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. That's pretty significant. So do you see the doctrine of the second coming of Jesus Christ to judge the world? and you see the fact that through what Jesus Christ did, you have been now admitted into the presence of God and that is your future. But there's one more thing that we're told here. The third contrast is suffering but brilliant. And that you see actually in verse 13. What are the lampstands? The lampstands are the churches. And we're the churches. It's actually a fine image that we'll get back to when we go through these letters. …

… 1 Peter 1, verse 25, the word of the Lord endureth forever. Revelation 1 verse 18, Jesus said, I am he that liveth and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Both ever living. Both cannot change. The Word of God cannot change. Matthew 5 verse 18, the written Word for Jesus himself said, Verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, not one jot nor one tittle shall fail from the law, till all be fulfilled. Do you know what a jot and a tittle are? Think of a comma or a dot over an I. It's the smallest marking in the Hebrew language. Jesus said the Word of God doesn't change, and Jesus Himself doesn't change. See the correspondence. Hebrews 13, verse 8, Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today, and forever. Both are unchanging. Both the written Word and the living Word are light for a dark world. Psalm 119, verse 105, Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. …

… I am the first and the last. I am He who lives and was dead. And behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of hell and of death." The one who is the resurrection and the life has the key to unlock the grave, to unlock the power of death, so that we have nothing to fear from death. Because for the Christian, it is a magnificent entrance to the supreme setting of human life. That's at the heart of the Christian faith. Without that, Christianity is simply empty moralism that is irrelevant to modern man. But as long as there is life and as long as there is death, there's no one more relevant Christ, who is the resurrection and the life.
