God’s Judgments Unsealed

The fourth seal that is unleashed is death. Look at verses 7 and 8. When the lamb broke the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, come. And I looked and behold an ashen horse. That word ashen, chloros. In Greek, we get our word chlorine. It sometimes says a pale horse. And him who sat upon it had the name death. And Hades was following after him. Apparently this is a picture, this ashen horse of a decomposing body. Authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth. In other words, there is going to be death for over a fourth of the planet's population. How will they be killed? Notice the four sources of death. They will be killed with the sword. The idea here is that there will be some large instrument of death that will account for millions of deaths. It could be nuclear exchanges between nations perhaps, but that's the kind of warfare that will occur. A second source of death will be famine that we already talked about. The third is pestilence or disease. Just think about 1.9 billion corpses in the world. There won't be an ability to handle all of that. These are the famous four horsemen of the apocalypse. As we saw last time, it all seems to start out in a very hopeful way because the first seal is broken, and one of the four living creatures, whom we know now are angels, cries with a loud voice of thunder, "'Come!' and the white horse comes, and the rider has a bow." And we pointed out no arrows, so this is a peaceful ascendancy, and a crown was given to him. So that first phase of the final judgment will be that worldwide, global, deceptive, utopian peace, one world government. …

… Do not harm the oil and wine. When he opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, Come! And I looked, and behold, a pale horse, and its rider's name was Death. And Hades followed him, and they were given authority over a fourth of the earth to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by wild beasts of the earth. When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne. They cried out with a loud voice, O sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth? Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer Until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers should be complete Who were to be killed as they themselves had been When he opened the sixth seal, I looked and behold, there was a great earthquake And the sun became black as sackcloth The full moon became like blood And the stars of the sky fell to the earth As the fig tree sheds its winter fruit when shaken by a gale, the sky vanished like a scroll that is being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place. …
