The star opened the pit of the Abyss, and smoke rose out of it like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke from the pit.He opened the pit of the abyss, and smoke went up out of the pit, like the smoke from a burning furnace. The sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke from the pit.And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.And he opened the pit of the abyss; and there went up a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.

The Coming Kingdom – Part 2
Robert Jeffress, 2026-08-27

… Lord, do not throw us into the abyss. Even they didn't want to go to that place. It was so horrible. We saw this place in Revelation 9 verses 1 and 2. The fifth trumpet judgment when a fallen angel was allowed to release a group of demonic scorpions to spread all over the earth. But now we have a heavenly angel who has been given a key and a chain. For what purpose? Look at verse 2. And this angel laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and he bound him for a thousand years. Remember last time in chapter 19, we saw that at the battle of Armageddon, the Antichrist and the false prophet are seized by an angel and they are cast into the lake of fire. But what about the third part of that satanic trinity, Satan himself? Well, he has a special destiny. That is, this angel takes him and bounds him for a thousand years. In other words, to put him into this place called the abyss, the bottomless pit. I want you to notice the four names that are used to describe Satan. He's called a dragon. That refers to his beastly character. …

… Jesus, Lord, do not throw us into the abyss. Even they didn't want to go to that place. It was so horrible. We saw this place in Revelation 9 verses 1 and 2. Day of the Demons
Robert Jeffress, 2026-08-07 · Scripture reading

… given to him. This fallen angel was given by God a key, and it was a key to a bottomless pit. Look at verse 2. And he opened the bottomless pit, and smoke went out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the pit. Where is this bottomless pit. And what is it? The abyss is the place where a group of demons who have already been judged are being held captive until their final judgment and dispatch into the eternal lake of fire. This angel, this demon was given a key to open the bottomless pit, but notice what else that he saw besides the smoke and the fire. He saw demonic tormentors from the abyss. Look at verse three. Then out of the smoke came locusts upon the earth and power was given them as the scorpions of the earth have power. And they were told not to hurt the grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. That's the 144,000 who've been sealed and saved by God. …

Sweet and Bitter | J.D. Greear

… if you want to see them later. Verse two, he, this falling star, Satan, opened the shaft of the bottomless pit and from the shaft rose smoke like the smoke of a great furnace. And the sun and the air were darkened with the smoke from the shaft. Another illusion to the Exodus plagues, the sun being darkened. Then from the smoke came locusts on the earth and they were given power like the power of scorpions on the earth, another allusion to the Exodus plagues, because now we got locusts, okay? Verse four, they were told, these demons were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any green plant or any tree, but only those people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads that were allowed to torment them for five months, but not to kill them. And their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it stings someone. This judgment points to a massive increase in demonic activity on earth. Here's the thing to know about demons. First, they're real. …

… Next verse. And he opened the bottomless pit and there rose out smoke of a great furnace. The sun, the air was darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. Next verse. And there came out of the smoke locusts. He's trying to describe what he's seeing. He's saying, I saw Lucifer cast down to the earth and he goes to the bottomless pit and he opens up a portion of hell that has never been open, that demons have been held for since the time they've sided with Lucifer, certain ones, they will be released upon the earth. And he said, they will look like locusts, but they will have the sting of a scorpion and that sting will last for five months and men will cry out and say, just let me die. I'm in perpetual, continual, agonizing pain, like one sting of a scorpion, but all over their body for five months, no remedy, no help. He said in revelation nine and seven, describing these demons that their legs will be like a horse. …

… This is an angelic being. And He opened the bottomless pit, and smoke went up out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the pit. Then out of the smoke came locusts upon the earth, and power was given them as the scorpions of the earth had power." This is the unleashing of demons depicted. So when you get to the fifth trumpet, you have this unleashing of demons who are described as if they were locusts. So we've already had an unleashing of demons who had been bound, bound since all the way back in the book of Genesis. So there are millions of demons in the world today. There will be at that time as well, but there will be some who have been bound since the book of Genesis, who will be released, increasing the massive size of Satan's force during the Great Tribulation. Now that gets us to the sixth trumpet in verse 13. …

… demons are. And smoke went up out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the pit. Then out of the smoke came locusts upon the earth, and power was given to them as the scorpion of the earth have power. They were told not to hurt the grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. And they were not permitted to kill anyone, but to torment for five months, and their Their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it stings a man. And in those days men will seek death and will not find it. They will long to die, and death flees from them." What is this? The world is bad now. It's bad now, and it's overrun with demons, but not all of them. And that coming day, Satan will unlock hell, and out of hell will come belching millions of demons, eager to work their evil, to pay God back for their incarceration and torment. …
