… from God apart from the law has been made known. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There's no difference. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified freely by his grace to the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God has presented him as a sacrifice of atonement through faith in his blood. In other words, men, all men sinful before God, but God has poured out the wrath due sin upon his son so that anyone, anywhere can be saved from their sin and reconciled to God forever. Which then leads to the question how is that possible? How is that a reality? And he answers that question in Romans 4 and 5. He says it's through faith. It's not through work. It's not through you doing a bunch of work for God. work God has done for you in Christ. It says in Romans 5, we're justified through faith. That's how we have peace with God, through faith. Because we believe, Romans 5, 6 through 8, that very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his love for us in this, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. He died for us. And it's through faith in what he has done that we are reconciled to God. This is the good news for every non-Christian friend who's in here this morning. Hear the good news. God has poured …
… and this righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice because in his forbearance, he left the sins committed beforehand unpunished. He did it to demonstrate his justice in the present time so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. Where then is boasting? It's excluded. On what principle? That of observing the law? No, but on that of faith. For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law. Is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles? too? Yes, of Gentiles too, since there's only one God who will judge the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith. Do we then nullify the law by this faith? Not at all. …
… 22 Romans chapter 3, for there is no distinction, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified by his grace as a gift through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by His blood to be received by faith. And then our sentences for this morning. This was to show God's righteousness because in His divine forbearance, He had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. this is according to many preachers and commentators and christians throughout history the mount everest of the bible romans 8 will come later so maybe there's a few mount everests but we are certainly in the himalayas this whole paragraph is one of if not the most important paragraph in the Bible and therefore most important and essential for each one of us. And we come at the end of this paragraph to see that Paul means to solve one of the great moral problems in the universe. …
… me Romans 3 23 says for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God your morality mine stinks Romans 5 8 but God shows his love for us and that while we were still sinners Christ died for us wow Romans 5 12 therefore just as sin came into the world through one man and death through sin and so death spread to all men or all mankind because all sinned. Romans 6, 23, for the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 10, verses 9 through 11, because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the scripture says, everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame. Romans 10, 13. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Make sure that's you. Call upon him today. Standing right now where you're at, you can say, Lord, I'm calling upon you. And the great prophet Isaiah said that if you'll call upon the name of the Lord, you shall be saved. And we try to complicate that. He's convicting you. He's calling you out. …
… sent not his son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved. Romans 3 23 for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. And that's cool. And I get it now. But when I was 15, I needed one night, one night. I didn't ask her to come in and say this, but here's what she did. She said, baby, once upon a time, long, long ago, there was a kingdom and there was a king. He was a loving king and he was a just king. And all the people in his kingdom was all loyal to him because he was loving. And everyone in the other kingdoms around did not mess because he was just. One day and the viruses came and they looked at him and they said, king, someone is stealing from the king's treasury. And he said, that cannot happen. so he set out a decree 10 lashes whoever's caught stealing from the king's treasury the kingdom had an executioner who was trained in how to inflict pain he had a leather belt and on the end was shard pieces of glass and and and claws from a bear or lion and and bone that has been sharpened and he was trained to hit this on your back and pull and tug in a way that it would rip the flesh off. 10 of those can cause severe pain. Even though he let the decree go out, they did not catch the thief and they were still still. 10 lashes went to 20. 20 lashes went to 30. …
… There's no difference. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified freely by his grace, the redemption that comes by Christ Jesus. God has presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, a propitiation through faith in his blood. God loves you so much. He has made a way for you to be saved from all your sin. He has sent his son. So don't think, well, what's the list of things I need to do? No, it's all based on what he has done. God has sent his one and only son. He's lived a life you could not live in your own life. Perfect obedience to God. He's died the death you deserve to die. He's died in the place, the punishment for sinners. He's taken it upon himself and he's risen from the dead and conquered the enemy you could not conquer. Death, sin, he's conquered it. So that if you will simply trust in him as Lord and Savior, You will be forgiven of all your sin and reconciled to God for all of eternity. …
… beginning at the end of verse 22 of Romans chapter 3. For there is no distinction, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified by His grace as a gift through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by His blood to be received by faith. Here's a thought experiment for you. How would you summarize the entire message of the New Testament in one sentence? In fact, that's too easy. Let's make it more difficult. Not one sentence because you could have semicolons and various subordinate clauses. how would you summarize the entire message of the New Testament in three words? What if you had just three words? In his book, Knowing God, all of you should read that. In his book, Knowing God, J.I. Packer famously gave his response to this thought experiment. It's not the only correct response, but it is J.I. Packer, so it's a pretty good one. Adoption through propitiation. Those were his three words. …
… sanctified, justified by the name of Jesus. Without Jesus, we are dead in our sins and all of us have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. But with the grace of Jesus, we can be completely forgiven and made new, not because we're good enough, but because he was perfect in every way. So the most important question isn't, have you gotten it all right? Is your life all together? The most important question is, have you trusted Jesus to make you right with God? Who is Jesus? He is the Lamb of God, the Son of God, born of a virgin who did not inherit our sin nature, lived perfect in every way, died on a cross for the forgiveness of our sins, was raised from the dead so that anyone, and this includes you, it doesn't matter how dark your life has been, it doesn't matter where you've fallen, what you've done, who you've hurt, how you've disappointed God, anyone who calls on the name of Jesus would be saved. …
… chapter 3. For there is no distinction, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by His grace as a gift through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. We come now to this great theme, one of the greatest themes of Scripture, the doctrine of justification. The word, the verb, was used earlier. Look back at chapter 2, verse 13, for it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. Though I argue that that is a negative use of the word justified, that he's laying out as he makes his case against the sinfulness of man, that it's the doers who will be justified, and he will reach then the conclusion in chapter 3, verse 20, that by works of the law, by doing, no one will be justified in his sight. So, he is introduced before this topic of justification and hinted at it, certainly, in verses 16 and 17 of chapter 1. …
… of glory that will be ours one day together with Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen. Our text this morning is Romans 3.23. Romans 3.23. And we'll pick up our reading at the end of verse 22. We read from God's Word, for there is no distinction, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. You may be thinking, I like the slow pace, but come on. I've seen where this is going, a verse this week, a verse next week, and for the next several weeks. Well, there's a lot to talk about as we come to these major, most important themes, not only in the book of Romans, but in our lives. words like justification, redemption, grace, gift, righteousness, propitiation, faith, and here this morning, glory. You may be thinking though, all right, I love that verse. This is one of the most well-known verses in the Bible. And I understand, pastor, some of the nuance we've been dealing with and what we're coming to, justification, these are complicated doctrines, but this verse is not only one of the best known verses, but it doesn't seem that difficult to understand. Doesn't it basically mean we've all messed up? Nobody lives up to God's standard. We all know this. If we were somehow to rank the top five verses that the most people have memorized, and it helps us this is a short one, those are the ones to memorize. …
… The righteousness of God has been manifested. Just do that, Paul, or maybe a verse. But you're going to say in verse 23, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Isn't that your whole argument? Why not just do that? Why such a meaty section on sin? Well, because there's a lot of arguments He has to make. There's lots of twists and turns. He wants the Gentiles to be convinced. He wants the Jews to be convinced. He wants the religious outsiders to know they don't have any excuses. He wants the religious insiders to know that they don't have a leg up. And he wants all of us to understand this is our problem. If you were to ask most people, one of those man-on-the-street interviews, what's the big problem out there? You're not going to get from most people anything like Romans 1, 2, and 3. You're going to get it's the lack of good leaders, it's the lack of education, it's the lack of affordable housing, it's what our parents have done, it's our screens, it's that political party, the other political party. And all of that has a bearing. We don't live up in the clouds. And yet Romans is telling us, this is your problem and my problem and the human problem in the world. You think you have a lot of other problems. You think you know what's really wrong. Remember the famous line from G.K. Chesterton when they had in London some essay …
… Well, who's wicked? The Bible says all of us have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Don't anybody in the sanctuary point at somebody else in this room and say, I recognize that guy. He's a murderer. That murderer can turn right back at you and say, I recognize you. You're an adulterer. I've never committed adultery in my life. Jesus said, if you've looked at a man or a woman and had lust in your heart for them, you're guilty of adultery already. You say, well, that's not fair. Well, it all depends on who's doing the grading. Notice when we do the grading, if it's our standards, we grade on a curve. And the curve always starts with me. And the curve always starts with you. God doesn't grade on a curve. There's one standard and it's Jesus. He's the standard. That's why God showed us his righteousness in Christ. There's no curve. There's a straight line. And the Bible says all of us have sinned. Every single one of us. And we're all condemned. You know the Bible says we're condemned without Jesus. You're not dumb. You can figure that out. …
… alienated from God as a result of sin. And none of us escapes that issue. Paul writes in Romans, you know, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. And furthermore, that the wages of sin is death, and the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ the Lord. Now, where this really hits the road is with this notion of Jesus being the one mediator. He says that there is one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus. So that every religion that does not center on Jesus, that doesn't find the solution in Jesus, that is detached, if you like, from complete reliance on Jesus, is a false religion. And that, of course, is a message that is hard for people to wrestle with, and it is often difficult for us to explain. Not because we don't believe it or believe it firmly, but because we want to explain it in a way that is true to the Bible and takes into account the people to whom we're speaking. …
… I pulled up to your address and listen, ain't nobody judging you because all of us have failed. Don't you look down your nose of snobbery at anybody around you because all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. All we like sheep have gone astray. All of us have made some choices we'd like to take back and gone with some people we wish we had never met. All of us have been some places we wish we had never gone. All of us have caught the ale of having failed. So don't you give up on you because God hasn't given up on you. But hold on, I'm about to shout you because the text lets us know. Here they are in Babylon. Babylon has brutalized them. Babylon has done them dirty, oppressing them. But always understand, my sisters and brothers, every empire has an expiration date on it. If that empire does not live by the principles of justice, I think I'll hang out right there. …
… There is no one good, not even one, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Friend, every one of us by default is headed for hell. We think the default is heaven and we only go to hell if we're exceptionally bad. but scripture teaches that we're all exceptionally bad. God only saves bad people because that's the only kind of people there are, which is why Jesus had to come to save us. Oh, but friend, look at the incredible words that followed that awful list. Verse 17, the spirit and the bride say, come, not go away, not you blew it, not get out of my presence, but come and let the one who hears say, come, and let the one who is thirsty come. Let the one who desires take the water of life without price. There is a river of life flowing from the throne of God right now that brings healing and forgiveness. And it's offered to you right here, right now, today, without price, without price for you, because the price was fully paid by Jesus. …
… all have sinned and come short of the glory of God the Bible also says While heads are bowed and eyes are closed, I'm going to ask you right now, as I look across this audience today, if you were to die today, do you have the confidence that you'd go to heaven? Do you know the answer? You heard it earlier. Can you say it and be honest about it, that you are trusting in Jesus and him alone? if you know that you're a sinner you know that you've offended the almighty God in your life even by thought certainly by deed and you're this thing one of the great evidences you're hoping and you're praying to who I don't know that God never finds out he already knows and he's calling you this morning give it all to me and start by giving me your life if that's you today heads bowed eyes closed Christians be praying will you slip your hand up wherever you're at and you're saying Pastor Jack that's what I'm doing today God bless you in the front Anyone else? Raise your hand high so I can see it. …
… because man saw the gap, the shortfall. And the Bible tells us in Romans chapter three, verse 23, for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. I wish the Bible was direct. We all have a shortfall. In other words, the bridge falls short. The bridge falls short. Lisa and I traveled to Hawaii about 20 years ago, and we stayed in this townhouse on this TPC course right on the Pacific Ocean. Beautiful. How many golfers do we have here? Just lift your hand. Men, women, yeah, a lot, a lot. It's a great game. It really is. So Lisa and I watched these golfing bros walk up to the tee box, which was on this little lava area, I mean, these bros are all jacked up with peptides and TRT, and they were trying to impress their ladies. Their ladies were in the golf cart. You know, they're... Every single person we watched, that ball would go up in the air. It's a par three. …
… that you're a sinner. What do you mean I'm a sinner? Yep, you are. So am I. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Newsflash, you're not perfect. And if you don't know, if you're a little insulted that I just said you're not perfect, ask somebody who knows you really well, like your husband, wife, mom, dad, child. They'll tell you. Realize that you're not perfect. Realize that you're a sinner. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Second, you need to realize that Jesus died for you, for you personally, not just for the world, for you. If you were the only person on earth, He would have come and died for you. Paul the Apostle said, he loves me and he gave himself for me. He personalized it. Third thing you need to do is you need to repent. I know that's a Bible preacher sounding kind of a word. Repent just means turn around. Turn around. Do an about face. …
… Can you see it? For all have sinned and fall, let's read it together. That'd be amazing. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Comma. You have to add the comma. Let's try again. for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, comma, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement through the shedding of his blood to be received by faith. So I stopped there. The atoning sacrifice. Remember, we're reading back, even time got that part. The centerpiece of our Christian faith is the atonement, the atoning sacrifice. What is that? That is what makes it possible for people who are far from God to come to know God. Atonement is the sacrifice that covers all the sin, but it also, I learned it this way, is at-one-ment. now God and us can be one no we don't become God but we become one with God the children of God born of God in relationship with God right with God friends of God walking with God future with God how by the at one meant sacrifice of Jesus Christ that happened by the shedding of his blood 10 red 11 people have seen others come with their sacrifice you know that story where jesus turned over the tables in the temple that was all about the sacrifice it was about people coming to jerusalem for the festival from a far away place jews lived all over the world at this time some would come …
… If you grew up around church, you can finish it for me. Romans 3.23. Anybody know the Roman road when you were growing up? You're like, I'm new to church. I don't know any of this stuff. What is the Roman road? Well, it's a book in the New Testament called Romans. It's a letter that Paul wrote to the church in Rome. And there's some verses in it that are key verses that when you stack them together, it shows you how to be saved in a very simple way. And one of those verses is Romans 3.23. I'll start it. We'll see how many people made it to youth group, enough to finish it. For all have sinned and fall short. It's on the screen. I just saw it out of the corner of my eye. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. That's the bad news. Because all is a very encompassing word. It means that every single person in this gathering today has missed the mark of God's glory. …
… to receive grace. The righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There's no difference between Jew and Gentile. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his, what's that word right there? by his what? Yeah, there's more people than that. We're justified, justified in the courtroom of heaven today in front of our father. You are not found guilty, but because of Jesus, you have been made innocent. So you have been justified. You stand right now as the righteousness of God. I said it last week, but let me remind you, you've never been more righteous than you are right now, and you'll never be more righteous in the future because today you are the righteousness of God. When God looks at you, he can't even see you. All he sees is his son, Jesus. Your life has been hidden in Christ. So when God looks, all he sees is the sacrifice of his son, the blood of Jesus that was shed for the sins of the world. …
This is going to be an exciting day as we study the most important paragraph in the Bible, which is Romans chapter 3, verses 21 through 28. Let's talk about the product. Whenever you're marketing, you have to have a product. So what's the product here? Jesus. It's a pretty good product, isn't it? That's who Paul is marketing. And the Bible tells us in verse 21, like I told you a second ago, but now apart from the law, apart, what? Apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been made known. Again, this is a major sea change. Paul now is talking about God rolling out this different way, this new way to have the righteousness of God through faith in Christ. So whenever you see those transitional phrases in the Bible, pay attention. But now, but now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been made known. This word known or the phrase made known is the Greek term. I love this. Fanarou. We get the word fan from this. …
… In the book of Romans, the apostle Paul echoes this perspective, writing, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. All. Calvinists call this all total depravity. I once heard a seminary professor argue that total depravity is the best place to start a theological conversation because everyone can agree that it is obviously true. Ouch. But yes. And here today's text flips our perspective. The deep irony in this parable is that the people criticizing Jesus for picnicking with sinners are in fact shown to be the people who are outside the shepherd's fold. The deep irony here is that Jesus tells these three stories to individuals with hard hearts, to people who are also clearly, painfully, tragically lost. So is this a parable about sin? Well, that depends on your definition. If sin is being estranged from God, then it is about sin. And it's also a parable about heaven's response to estrangement. This parable invites everyone, especially Christ's critics, to marvel at the ways of God, to attend to the one who seeks, who finds, and who celebrates those who have been lost. …
… to all who believe there is no difference for all have sinned and fall short of the what? glory of God and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God has presented Jesus as a sacrifice of atonement through faith in his blood. What that means is God has chosen to pour out the judgment due sent upon his son in the place of sinners. Truth number five, God has made a way of salvation for the lost. God has made a way. We have all sinned against God. Every single person in this room, at other campuses, every single person in the world. We are all separated from God. If we die in the state of separation from God, we will spend eternity separated from God in judgment for our sin. But yes, God is loving. He loves us and has made a way for us to be saved from our sin. God has sent his son, Jesus, to pay the price for our sin. …
… there's no difference between Jew or Gentile For all, there's our depravity again, have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Comma. Everyone needs to always say that when we get there. And are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. Stay with Paul for a moment. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement. There's one of our seven words. through the shedding of his blood to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness. God was trying to show people that he really is righteous because in his forbearance, he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished, all these people who lived and died before Jesus. He did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. God could do anything, and he certainly could have moved the table, but if he had moved the table, he wouldn't be just. And how could we trust and follow a God who's not just? …
… and nobody can be holy, and nobody can be perfect. And then Romans 3.23, a verse that a lot of us have grown up around, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. And what's the result of that? It's right down here at the end of this first paragraph. And like the rest, we were by nature deserving. The translation I grew up with said objects of wrath. In other words, God's, remember what wrath is. We're just going to go back and forth. Wrath is the judgment of a holy God against all sin. This is the ultimate collision of holiness and sinfulness. It is not a God who is angry at you and saying, I'm going to really smash you into the ground. It is a God who is holy, who's coming against all sin. Yours, mine, and everybody else's on this planet. And if you want to just picture it with me for a moment, it would be like setting a teacup on this table and dropping a bowling ball from the top of the ceiling. …
… the glory of God is man fully alive. in Romans chapter three, verse 23, it says this, it says, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. I always focused on the first half of that verse, all have sinned. It's easy for me to identify with the humanity. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. And I think when I look at that story of Peter and the failure and the success and all those things, he says, Peter, when you're sitting down in shame, you're not standing up giving me glory. And so to me, failure is to stay seated when God gave you the opportunity to stand up. A couple of years ago, my son was doing a video shoot. His name is Corbin. And he was doing a video shoot for our youth. And I'm watching him do the video shoot. And I'm like, oh, I'm so proud of him. I'm just beaming with excitement. Come on. …
… children and I'm making my business that okay if you wake me up in the middle of the night and you need to be saved I'm gonna say Romans 3 23 Romans 6 23 Romans 5 8 Romans 10 9 and 10 10 13 I know it by the heart. I not only know where it is, I can quote them to you. Come on, holler back at it, brother. Y'all think that's the pastor's job. It's not just the pastor's job, it's everybody's job who claims to be a child of the Most High God. And the tragedy is some of y'all have been a part of this church for a long time and you still haven't learned how to share the gospel. God, I can't get no help up in here. I can't get no support. I can't get no help. Y'all don't understand what I'm saying. I feel like I'm talking to myself. I'm challenging you to be in a posture or position to be able to share the gospel with somebody, with your friends, relatives, acquaintances, neighbors, coworkers, enemies, and your strangers without notes. Y'all, listen, y'all are not going to stand before God and God asks you, did you know how to share the gospel? You are not going to be able to say, John Jenkins didn't tell us. …
… You and I chose less than the best. For all have sinned, and they fall short of the glory of God. The problem of sin is to miss God's glory. The wrath of God's being revealed from heaven. And Romans, against all the godlessness and wickedness of people who suppress the truth by their wickedness. since what may be known about God is plain to them. The heavens are declaring the glory of God because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world, God's invisible qualities, his eternal powers, divine nature have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made so that people are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God or gave thanks to him. But their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. And although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and they exchanged. Can you say exchange with me? They exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. …
… now who in this world who listening to me tonight can afford for god to stop forgiving you all have sinned and come short of the glory of god the wages of sin is death but the gift of god is eternal life who in here can afford i mean think about it now for god to say all right no more forgiveness for you no more no no no everything you do wrong you're gonna pay for it every time you mess up i'm gonna make sure you reap exactly what you sow who in here can afford i want to see the hands right in yeah you put your hand up in the chat if you can afford that no i think we all need grace no i think we all need god's love i i think we all need god's mercy i think we all need compassion i think we all need some forgiveness so if we all need it don't just need it pass it along distribute forgiveness because you've been a recipient of forgiveness and when you have a church that embraces forgiveness you have a church that's gonna explode in growth because people can be in the church and know perfection is not a prerequisite perfection is not a prerequisite for me to be at this church i can fall i can fall short i can mess up and the church my leaders are not going to hang me on a cross because i fell short but i'm going to be embraced i'm going to be forgiven because we're unifying church i mean i i mean …
… believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life. Motivated by love and knowing that all of us have sinned against Him, He says, for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. There's none righteous, no, not one. All of us have indebted ourselves to God because of our sin. That is, we have sinned against Almighty God. We have violated His law, and therefore, we have to be dealt with. And so, either we will pay the penalty of our sin, which He says ultimately is eternal death, or someone else will pay that penalty. Well, God, in His wonderful, loving, forgiving Spirit, chose not to make all of us pay the penalty. The cross is God's statement to the world. that in our sinfulness against him and our obligation to repay this debt to him, he has chosen to pay this debt in our behalf by sending his only begotten son, the Lord Jesus Christ. And the moment a person receives Christ as their savior, the Bible says that debt has been canceled and we are from that moment on free from the penalty of our sin. …
