… us when we trust in Christ as Savior. He justifies us. He declares us not guilty based on what Christ did for us on the cross. Romans 5.1 says, therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. The only way God will allow you and me into heaven is by being forgiven of our sins. And contrary to many opinions, there are not many ways to heaven, there is only one way to heaven, and that is through faith in Christ. How can you make sure that when you stand at the entrance of heaven, God is going to look at your heart and welcome you into his presence? 1 John was written in order that people might know for sure their eternal destination. In 1 John 5, the apostle writes, verse 11, God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his son. He who has the son has the life. He who does not have the son does not have the life. …
… For us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, he was delivered over to death for our sins, and he was raised to life for our justification. Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we've gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. Not only so, but we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, we rejoice in our suffering because we know that suffering produces perseverance, and perseverance, character, and character, hope, and hope does not disappoint us because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit whom he has given us. You see, at just the right time, while we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. God demonstrates his love for us in this. …
… judgment, an expression of his mercy, which speaks of his glory. Therefore, says Paul, being justified by faith, we have peace with God. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand—now, notice this—and we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. We rejoice in the certainty of God's manifestation of himself. So Habakkuk, hang on. I know what I'm doing, and it won't be late, and it won't be premature. It will be at the right time. Some of us have illnesses that we would like healing for right now, and God says, hang on. We don't like the answer, but it is his answer. But in his own appointed time, he will accomplish his purposes. So let us learn with Habakkuk.
… not guilty. And that's by appealing to the mercy, the covering, the atonement of Jesus Christ. Romans 5, 1 says, therefore, having been justified by works, no. Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Notice how Jesus closes this parable. It's this idiom we've heard and quoted often. Verse 14, for everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, but he who humbles himself shall be exalted. The proud person who refuses to bow his knee before Jesus Christ and beg for the covering, his covering for his own sin, one day that person will be humbled. The Bible says one day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God. If you wait till that day you've waited too long. But secondly, the person who's willing to humble himself in this life, to not only express sorrow for his sin, but to trust completely in God's covering of his sin through Christ, that person will be exalted one day, will sit at the right hand of God the Father. …
… Therefore, having been justified by faith, that is, we trust Christ, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which you stand and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Wow. A few more verses. One in this section, a few more to end. Isaiah chapter 1, verses 18 and 19. I love this. God says, come now. So before I read, does that apply to you? Listen. Whoever you are, if you can hear me right now, wherever, whatever. God is saying to you, come now, not come later. Come now, and let us reason together. The word reason is, let's argue. See, he's so honest, because you know, you do want to argue with God at times, don't you? He knows that. So he says, you want to argue? Come on. Come on over, and let's argue. It's like, yeah, I got a few things to say about it. Yeah, come on, guys, bring it. …
… when you are justified, when you trust in Christ, something happens. Not only are you made right with God, but you have an incredible peace. Romans 5.1, therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. It's a good deal. child of God adopted into the family promise of heaven perfect righteousness and peace that's a great deal truly I know it's so but how can a man be righteous before God if one wished to contend with him he could not answer him one time out of a thousand God is wise and hard and mighty and strength who has hardened himself against him and prospered he removes the mountains, and they do not know him. When he overturns them in his anger, he shakes the earth out of its place. Its pillars tremble. He commands the sun, and it does not rise. He seals off the stars. He alone spreads out the heavens. He treads on the waves of the sea. He made the bear, that is the constellation. Some of you know it as Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. Orion and Polites and the chambers of the south. He does great things past finding out. Yes, wonders without number. If he goes by me, I do not see him. If he moves past, I do not perceive him. If he takes away, that is, if he takes somebody's life, takes somebody away, who can hinder him? Who can say to him, what are you doing? God will not withdraw his anger. The allies of the proud lie prostrate …
… Let me explain that. If you know your Bible, Romans 5.1, therefore having been justified by faith, having been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Favorite verse in the Bible, best promise of the Bible, I think. We have peace with God. Same peace, same grace that Paul is talking about in verse three, grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. What happens when we're justified? Again, kind of quiz time. What happens when we're justified is that God looks at us and because we have believed in Jesus that Jesus' righteousness has been credited to our account so that God looks on us and he sees Jesus' innocence. He sees Jesus' righteousness. He chooses to not hold our sin over our head. When I forgive somebody, I'm choosing to not hold their sin over their head anymore. I'm choosing to say, I want to look at them the way that Jesus looks at them. …
… the sin problem has been dealt with definitively. Romans 5.1, therefore, having been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Done, accomplished. but just because you've been justified doesn't mean the earthly consequences of sin have been erased. Just because you came forward at freedom celebration or at an altar call doesn't mean your wife is ready to take you back yet. Just because you came forward, you gave your life watching online, which is beautiful, doesn't mean that your kids are ready to have a relationship with you again. It doesn't mean that your boss who fired you is ready to rehire you. the earthly consequences of sin persist. I, as a pastor, cannot stand up here and promise you that everything is just gonna be great from now on. That all those problems that were there that might've even led you to the place of wanting to become a Christian, they're gone now, they're fixed. That'd be a lie. I would be dishonest if that's what I told you. …
… Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand. And we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. But here's going to get good in verse 3. And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations. What? What type of Navy SEAL language is this? But we glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance. and perseverance, character, and character, hope. But let me stop right there. That word perseverance is an interesting Greek word, and it is from two words, hypomone, hypomone, and it means, those two words means to abide under, to abide under. So these trials are producing something in me. I'm getting something out of it. Oh, I feel it right there. What's that phrase? I'm leaving here with something. Some of y'all know what I'm talking about. It's not happening to you. It's happening for you. because something is happening in you and you are becoming qualified to stand in the times to come. …
… That's the good news that's coming, and it will come and come again and again. Romans 5.1, therefore, since we have been justified by faith, by faith, not doing, by faith, we have peace. All those other religious impulses, you won't have peace. You won't have peace. A lot of religions that will claim that they'll help you to live well. They won't help you die well. This is what you want when you have to come to the end. We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. To stand before God and on that day, everything in the heart of the Christian will want to cry out, Look at Him. Look at Him. Look away. because you judge with complete fairness and partiality. So don't look at me. Look at Christ. And by clinging to Christ, there is hope. There is salvation. There is eternal life. Let's pray. Father in heaven, we give thanks for your holy word. Would you convict us, lead us to Christ? were not doers, not the doers that can be justified. …
… Paul summed this up in Romans chapter 5. Therefore, since we've been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him, we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand. and we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. We have peace by the ransom of God. We are former prisoners under our debt, but now, instead of being condemned to a debtor's prison, the judge has declared us innocent. The debt went instead to the son. Only one person can be condemned for a crime, and the judge has chosen to make his son the one who pays. Therefore, having been bought by the price of the son, we receive the gift by faith. God has declared us forgiven. So now, what do we do with that freedom? We neither deny it nor forget it. It's as Paul wrote in our sermon text, or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? …
… let me show you this, Romans 5, 1 therefore, since we have been justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, do you see this? the path to justification that means to be made right with God the path to peace with God is paved by faith by trust in Jesus as the Christ that title means the one God had promised all these years and the Lord of your life so get the picture faith is confessing God I have chosen conflict with you but I'm choosing to lay down my arms in light of your love for me. Faith is saying, I believe that Jesus has died for my sin, and I trust him as the promised prince, promised prince who has authority to bring me peace with you. Which then, follow this, opens the door to peace with others. As one forgiven by God, you now have supernatural power to forgive others. As one loved by the God you offended, you have supernatural power to love those who offend you. …
… This is what the apostle Paul said in Romans chapter five, verse one. He said, therefore, since we've been, and he uses a legal term, he says, since we've been justified through faith. We're not justified through religious works. We're not justified by trying really, really hard. We're actually justified through faith, faith in the perfect work of Jesus. We're justified through faith. Because of that, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. This is amazing news. We've been justified by faith, And through that faith, we have peace with God. Notice that peace with God doesn't come from our religious efforts. It doesn't come from us trying harder. I don't care how good you are. Maybe you played a whole round of golf and didn't say a single naughty word. Even if you can do that, even if you came to church and like you were holy all the way there and didn't say, you know, hey, we're gonna come to church and worship God and then yell at your kids, like, don't make me pull this car over. …
… I am. So are you. We offer God nothing. Let me say it again. We offer God zero zip. Then there is the therefore of salvation, Romans chapter five, verse one. God saw our dilemma caused by sin. He did something we don't deserve. It's called the mercy of God, the mercies of God. Mercy is when I get what I don't deserve. God sent Jesus Christ to die on the cross for our sins and rise again, thus autographing, if you wanna keep this word picture going, in blood paid in full. So the Son of God, Jesus Christ, has paid the price for all of your wrongdoings and mine. There's also the therefore of security. If you're wondering, once we're saved, we're in. If we mean it to the best of our ability, we pray and ask Christ to come in, that's it. We're a part of the family. And the Bible tells us that we're adopted into the family of God. Back in biblical days, you could disown a biological child, but not a child who'd been adopted. …
… particularly when it comes to our suffering. Watch this, Romans chapter five, verse one. It says, therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we stand. This is the gospel, what we just talked about, how through Jesus we have access to God. So what's the result of that? Keep going in Romans 5. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings. This is a weird way to talk. we rejoice in our sufferings. Why? Because we know that suffering produces endurance and endurance produces character and character produces hope and hope does not put us to shame. There's all kinds of hope you can have in this world that will put you to shame. You hope in your riches, you'll be put to shame. You hope in your sports team, you will be put to shame. …
… it says in verse 1, therefore, since we have been justified through faith, can you say that with me? Justified through faith. Can you say it with me? Justified through faith. That's an important idea today. We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith. there's faith again, into this grace in which we now stand. So Paul is writing to believers. He's writing to the church. And he's assuming because of the journey he's been on with these people that they have understood the gospel that is the good news of Jesus Christ. And so he's writing through Romans to unpack for them the certainty of their faith and the riches of their faith and the outworking of their faith and the results of their faith. And as he's coming to chapter 5, he's really doubling down on how they all got saved, how they got into this position. This is a position. What is the position? They have access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. …
… saying being justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is sin that separates us. Can I get a witness? It is sin that puts a barrier between man and God. This wall of petition destroys the peace. But I hear I am saying there is no peace for the wicked. Sin is the grand disturber. Sin is a constant troublemaker. Sin will wound your heart. It is the source of all disorder. Sin brings about stripes, jealousy and envy. Sin brings about covetousness. Sin brings about hate, war, and killing. Can I get a witness? But Jesus came to destroy the order that sin had set up and bring peace to our dying soul. peace can I get a witness Jesus Jesus he came here to redress and to redeem I heard him that when Jesus was born in Bethlehem the angels they call his name his name Jesus For he shall save his people from their sin. Can I get awareness? …
… Listen to the language of Romans 5. Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Verse 10 says, We were enemies. We are now reconciled to God through the death of His Son. So what does it mean to say the gospel of peace? The gospel brings you peace with God. We're not talking about psychological peace, emotional peace, experiential peace. We also are blessed with that as a fruit of the Spirit. But the main issue is that we have been made literally children of God. That's the peace that has taken place through Christ. We were enemies. We hated God. God was angry at us, and the gospel produced peace. So how does that relate to the Christian life? It relates to it in a very simple way. God's on your side. Rather than being against you, rather than having the devil against you and God against You now have God for you to the degree that no ultimate harm can come your way. …
… And we read in chapter 5 of Romans these words, therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. So that's the first benefit, that we are reconciled to God. The estrangement is over. no more warfare between us and God. We have peace because of our justification. And then the second benefit that the apostle mentions is this, through whom, that is through Jesus, also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand. And so the word that Paul uses there to describe what Christ has won for us is access to the Father. And that's what Jesus has in view here when He talks about His being the door. The door is a point of access. If I want to go into my house, I don't crawl through the window unless I've lost my key or something. Usually if you see somebody crawling through the window of the home, you call the police because you figure it's a burglar. …
