… Spirit. Okay. What does the Holy Spirit want us to think about? Over there in Romans 8 again it tells us, there are as many as are led by the Spirit of God, the sons of God. You did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the spirit of adoption by which you cry, Abba Father. Here's what God wants you to think about. You are adopted, you are loved, and you are welcomed by God. This is important because sometimes we get discouraged. We feel like everyone's forgotten about us. Nobody cares about us. You are adopted by God. Is anybody here adopted? Any adopted people? I'm okay. I'm adopted. I'm adopted. And not only was I adopted by a man named Oscar Laurie who gave me his name Oscar. You didn't know that. No, it's Laurie. Which is spelled like a girl's name. Which I hated when I was younger. Especially when I was in military school because you go by your last name. …
… It can be quenched, not only through disobedience, but simply ignoring the Holy Spirit's direction. Remember, Paul said, for all who are led by the Spirit, these are the sons of God. One mark of being a Christian is that the Holy Spirit is giving you direction. Don't ignore his voice. Be filled with the Holy Spirit of God. Principle number three, God's power is amplified by his word. God's power in your life is amplified by his word. Just like this microphone amplifies my voice, so God's word amplifies his spirit. Yes, his spirit is powerful, But when you combine God's Spirit with His Word, it's like 10 times the power. It's a booster to God's power, God's Word. They work in tandem together. To just understand the power of the Word of God, listen to Hebrews 4, verse 12. For the Word of God is living, it's active, it is sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing as far as the division of the soul and the spirit. According to Paul, listen to 2 Timothy 3, 16 to 17. …
fools despise wisdom and instruction. A second benefit of having a Christian leader is that Christians experience the leading of God in their lives. Romans 8, 14 says, those who are led by the Spirit of God, these are the children of God. If you're a child of God, if you know Christ as your Savior, you have the Holy Spirit of God leading you. And finally, Christian leaders who uphold Christian values enjoy the unique favor of God upon their lives. I mean, the Old Testament is clear about this. When a believing king was installed and he followed godly principles, God not only blessed the king, he blessed the people the king ruled over. In the same way, when there was an evil king. God not only judged that evil king, he judged the nation that he ruled over. Proverbs 29 verse 2 says, when the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Is the candidate a Christian? That's the first question. Second question to ask, do the candidate's policies align with the Bible? …
… die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. Because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. You did not receive a Spirit that makes you a slave again to fear. You received the Spirit of sonship. And by Him we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. And if we're children, we are heirs. Heirs with God. Co-heirs with Christ. If indeed we may share in His sufferings in order that one day we are going to share in his glory. I consider our sufferings, present sufferings do not compare with the glory that will be revealed in us. The creation waits an eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. For the creation itself was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, and hope that the creation will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. …
… The Bible says you are a joint heir with Christ. Romans chapter 8, verse 14. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, translation, do you know what it's like to have God at work in your life? These are sons of God. for you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear. Notice, fear. But you received the spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, Abba, Father, the Spirit himself. And there's that verse. Down to verse 17. And if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with him, that we may also be glorified together, that is together with him. You are a joint heir. Christ not only saved you from your sins, rescued you from hell, gave you a new life, but he's gonna share all of his glory, well, glory, his blessed presence with you forever. The co-heir. To be a co-heir. Look, I know we're just happy to get to heaven, are we not? …
Well, there is a word. We'll be coming from Romans 8, verse 14 through 18. And I really encourage you in your free time to definitely study the chapter in its whole, for we will be feeding from it in its entirety. And I ask if you're able to stand as we honor God's reading or the reading of God's holy word. Romans 8 beginning at verse 14. For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons and daughters of God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading you to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also. Heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ. If indeed we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed in us. …
… Spirit teaching you and bringing things to your remembrance. And also the Holy Spirit leads us. Romans 8.14 says, for as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. And I found this leading is usually just a prompting, just a sense of direction. I feel like I need to go talk to that person. Maybe I need to do this thing. Little promptings from the Holy Spirit that you will begin to sense as you mature in your faith. And finally, the Holy Spirit wants to empower you and fill you again and again and again. Ephesians 5 says, don't be drunk with wine because I will ruin your life, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to yourself in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord. That phrase, be filled, is a command. You're commanded to be filled with the Spirit. Secondly, it's something you should receive again and again. It speaks of a continuous flow of the Spirit into your life. …
Look at this next verse there on your outline. Romans 8, verse 14. Only those people who are led by God's Spirit are God's children. Uh-oh. Let me read it again. Only those people who are led by God's Spirit are God's children. So it is absolutely vitally important that you learn what we're going to talk about this weekend on how do I get guidance from God or how do I be led by God's Spirit. Only those people who are led by God's Spirit, circle that, led by God's Spirit, are God's children. So you can see the importance of this. On Friday, I took a couple guys from our staff and we just did a little day hike. It was such a beautiful day after all the rain we've been having. And I noticed that as we were taking this hike that a hike or a journey or a walk is a composition of both starts and stops. And when you're on a journey, you're not always walking. …
… He leads us. Romans 8.14. I don't have time to turn there. Romans 8.14. All who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. let me say that again all who are led by the spirit of God are sons of God to be a son now it's interesting this is one of those places where we don't see son and daughter mentioned and it's not because the Bible is just being chauvinistic here the picture is when you see places in the New Testament where only sons is mentioned not sons and daughters the reality is first century culture the inheritance the privilege family being passed on went to son so it's a good thing that men and women are both referred to as sons because the reality is there's no, because you are a female does not mean you're second place in the family of God. We're all sons of God receiving the full inheritance that comes from God. And so the picture is those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. …
… it says all of creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God well then who are the sons of God well let me make it practical and real for you earlier he tells you in Romans 8 14 he says for as many as are led by the spirit of God these are the sons of God. This is important. This is important. In this season, we are going to have to have an extremely intentional relationship with the Holy Spirit unlike ever before because the Holy Spirit leads us, watch this, both in alignment and to alignment. How do I get, because that's a legitimate question. PT, you're talking about alignment. How do I get into alignment? How do I know if I'm in alignment? Well, I'm glad you asked the question. It's not your job. It's the Holy Ghost job. so so i have to watch this so i have to learn to yield to the holy spirit and you have to and you do have to yield to the holy spirit over in hebrews chapter 12 where the writer is talking about he's referencing the hagai scripture what he talks about he talks about how everything that let me just paraphrase everything that can be shaken will be shaken so that that which cannot be shaken will remain. And it talks about how we're receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, and I'll talk about that maybe in a minute. But what's taking place is the Spirit, before it talks about …
… we have to understand that our inheritance first starts with our identity, that our inheritance from God. I want to go to Romans chapter 8, verses 14 through 17. And to contextualize this question, And part of the reason why they're asking about our spiritual inheritance is because I talked about the inherited traits that we receive biologically and how we are predisposed to certain types of traits. But also recognizing that in our spiritual inheritance that we have some powers and authority and offerings that only come from our relationship with God through Jesus that allows us to have power and strength and peace. And so Romans 8 chapters 14 through 17 says, for if you live according to the flesh, you will die. Okay, let's take a minute and just let that marinate for a minute. So if we talk about living according to the flesh, of course, we talk about the spirit versus the flesh in church a lot. And, you know, you got to kill your flesh. …
… Because I could feel the flesh pulling at me. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. If you're led by the Spirit of God, you are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear. You have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear. You didn't come over here to be a Christian and be put back under the law. But you have received the spirit of adoption. Glory to God. Adopted children have something over born children. Born children, you just had them because you're pregnant. Adopted children, you chose them. You picked them out. They never have to wonder are they wanted Because you had an option Not to adopt them You chose to adopt them So because of Christ You have the spirit of adoption You who were not a people Have been made a people You have been grafted into the family You have become a part Of the commonwealth of Israel According to Ephesians chapter 2 You don't have to worry about The commonwealth of Israel You don't have to worry about the Jews being the chosen people because you have been adopted. …
… But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, Abba, Father, it is that very spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God. And if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ. If in fact we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. Romans 8 reminds us that we're free. Romans 8 reminds us we are alive. And in this segment, do me a favor, touch yourself and say, I'm an heir. I'm an heir. Within these verses that I've just read, Paul makes allusion to one of the most beautiful and the deepest components of salvation that is arguably one of the most neglected. Within these verses, Paul makes mention of the pneuma weothasea, the spirit of adoption. …
