Sermons on Romans 8:9

You, however, are controlled not by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if it is so that the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if any man doesn’t have the Spirit of Christ, he is not his.But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.But ye are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you. But if any man hath not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Tremble at God's Word
David Platt, 2026-09-30

… and peace. The sinful mind is hostile to God. It doesn't submit to God's law nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the spirit if the spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the spirit of Christ. He doesn't belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, and your spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, then he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his spirit. Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation, but it is not to the sinful nature to live according to it. For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. Because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. You did not receive a Spirit that makes you a slave again to fear. You received the Spirit of sonship. And by Him we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. And if we're children, we are heirs. …

Spirit, Not Self - Louie Giglio
Louie Giglio, 2026-07-13

… You are in the realm of the spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. In other words, it's possible, Paul is saying, to sit in a church gathering and to think that you are a Christian, but to not have experienced a born-again conversion of life whereby Jesus became Lord and the Spirit filled your life. It's possible to have the name and not the power. We read about that last week. These people had a form, remember he wrote to Timothy, of godliness, but they denied the power. What were they denying? The Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit's unction and control in their lives. But if Christ is in you, then even though your body, your flesh still, is subject to death because of sin, the spirit gives life because of righteousness. In other words, your body is on a collision course with a grave, but your spirit is on a collision course with the righteousness of God and with God himself. And if the spirit of him, wow, you might just want to put a little star in your text by this if it's not already there, a little check mark or two in the margin and maybe get your highlighter out if you haven't already. And if the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he, Holy Spirit, who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your …

… You can look that up. Romans chapter eight, verses five to nine, where the apostle Paul talks about, hey, your mind can be set on things. You're not an animal. Animals just respond to stimuli. Humans have this amazing capacity to think, I'm gonna put my thoughts on that. I'm gonna put my mind, I'm gonna set my mind somewhere. and your mind is going to, as you drive through university, all the advertisements all around town, you got the billboards, you got stuff on your phone, the ads are popping up. You can endure all sorts of stimuli coming at you if you have set your mind on an enduring, solid, powerful place, mainly the voice of Jesus in his word. You become ready for the day when you've set your mind and you reset your mind. Now, I know you can't only think about heavenly things all day. Now, you live on earth, you've got a calling here as a student and in your ministry, but in meditation, you can set your mind on the things of God. …

LIVE THE LIFE YOU WERE DESIGNED FOR
Dave Clark, 2025-10-26

… It says, you, however, are not in the realm of the flesh, but are in the realm of the spirit. If indeed the spirit of God lives in you, and if anyone does not have the spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the spirit gives life because of righteousness. See, whenever someone commits their life to Jesus, their sins are forgiven, but also the Holy Spirit comes to dwell inside them. You can't do it on your own. Everybody say, I can't do it on my own. That's freeing, isn't it? I can't do it on my own. That's right. The Spirit who lives in us gives us life. That's the power. Look at verse 11. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his spirit who lives in you. That's a power-packed verse. That's crazy. …

… when you're after the flesh, you can't please God. But ye, ye, ye, you are not in the flesh. You're not in the flesh, but in the Spirit. If so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you, if he hangs around you, if he just lay up next to you, if he just holds you in the middle of the night, if he just comforts you in the store. Somebody might be listening at me in the hospital. You're not in the hospital bed by yourself. Jesus is all around you. Oh, he's all around you. You are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, and so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now, if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. If you don't have the Spirit of Christ, you are none of his. If you don't have the insignia of Christ, you know what I mean by insignia, like a family crest or a family sign. …

… I live, yet not I, but Christ lives in me. Romans 8, If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. You are the temple of the Spirit of God. God the Father and the Son have taken up residence in you. This is the wonder of the true church of Jesus Christ, that the Lord inhabits the church individually to start with and then collectively as well. When we gather, He gathers with us. He inhabits our praise. He is in us individually and collectively. So this morning, as every time we gather, He's here, but He's always here in the life of a believer. That's why in the Great Commission Jesus said, "'Lo, I'm with you always.'" John 14, 18, "'I will not leave you. I will come to you,' He promised the disciples. John 14, 23, if anyone loves Me, and here's the key, I'll make My abode with him. If you love him, he lives in you. Paul says in Colossians 3, Christ is all and in all. …
