… he may encourage your hearts we should encourage one another as a part of our regular teaching Titus 2 15 these are the things you should teach encourage and rebuke now I don't want to talk about rebuking today it's not a sermon on rebuking that's an important part of what we do but encouragement is what should be happening from the pulpit we need encouragement to resist the delusion of sin. Hebrews 3.13, encourage one another daily as long as it's called today so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness. How often do we need encouragement to fight sin? Daily. Encouragement is a core part of why the church gathers. Hebrews 10.24.25, classic verse, let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another and all the more as you see the day approaching. That's just a very brief biblical survey that shows from the Old Testament to the New Testament, from the Psalms to the prophets to the Gospels, we see that the spirit of encouragement is a core part of the church. When someone is encouraged, it changes how we live. People who have an encouraged spirit, who feel built up, have significantly lower cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Now, sometimes when you think, oh gosh, this is a …

… The elders were to follow their faith. And we who are preachers and teachers are to teach with all authority, Titus 2.15 says, and don't let anyone evade that. Don't let anyone think that they are not accountable for obeying biblical authority as brought to them by their shepherds and pastors. Peter points out in 1 Peter 5 that we don't lord it over people. We don't do this to dominate people, but we serve them as loving shepherds. So there will be authority and there will be submission in function. There has to be children to their parents, wives to their husbands, congregations to the elders, citizens to the government, etc., for order in human society. But we're going to talk, first of all, right where Paul begins with the wives. So ladies, this is your Sunday, and I won't get to your husband, so make sure he shows up next week because he needs equal attention on this subject. The duty of the wives is described in verses 22 to 24. …

And then in verse 15, chapter 2, verse 15, these things speak and exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee. Timothy, affirm these things, that God's people ought to be zealous. Don't you be a middle-of-the-roader when it comes to zeal. The middle of the road is a poor place to walk, a poor place to drive. It is certainly a poor place to live. Those of us who are saved ought not to be lukewarm. We ought to be out and out for the Lord Jesus Christ. We ought to be zealous for God's Word and for the truth. You say, sometimes that divides people. It's better to be divided by truth than to be united in error. Amen? We ought to be zealous. Jesus didn't try to get along with everybody on everything. He said in Matthew chapter 10, verse 14, Think not that I came to send peace on the earth. I came not to send peace, but a sword. Truth divides. It was Martin Luther who was zealous for the word of God. …

… zealous of good works. These things speak and exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee. The title of the message, Don't Be a Disgrace to Grace. Don't be a disgrace to grace. Now what is grace? Grace is God's love to us. GRACE IS GOD'S LOVE THAT CAUSES GOD TO GIVE TO US. Gracias IS GOD'S LOVE THAT CAUSES GOD TO GIVE TO US WHERE THERE IS NO MERIT. GRACE IS GOD'S LOVE THAT CAUSES GOD TO GIVE TO US WHEN THERE IS MUCH DEMERIT. GRACE IS GOD'S LOVE THAT CAUSES GOD TO GIVE TO US WHERE THERE IS NO MERIT AND MUCH DEMERIT WHEN WE DON'T EVEN WANT IT.
