Make War on Sin with Exercise
David Mathis, 2026-05-16

… 2 Timothy 2, verse 21. Titus 3, verse 1. He says, be ready for every good work. that's for all Christians especially those who are in ministry we want to be ready for good work now that involves more than the body but it doesn't involve less than the body there are very few if any good works that I do that do not involve my body in some way now sometimes there's the minimal good works some pastors do some we send an email it's a good work we're encouraging somebody it even involves the fingers It does involve the motivation though. Can you get over a sedentary stationary position to take the initiative to do the good work? And so often doing good for others, seeing needs and meeting needs in others involves getting up off the couch, moving with energy towards something, not having this barrier in my brain thinking, oh, if I got to do something, I'm trying to minimize all of my physical effort in life. Rather thinking, it's enjoyable to help someone. It's enjoyable to use what modest, imperfect body I have to help somebody else. So a body that's ready to do others good. That's the kind of fitness I want. …

Why Would a Christian Exercise?
David Mathis, 2026-03-14

… It's in 2 Timothy 2, verse 21. It's in Titus 3, verse 1, which makes me think that he said the exact same phrase twice in his very short little 13 letters. That's what I hope we will be. this cross generation, that you will be a people who are ready for good works. First and foremost, in your theology, in your soul, in your willingness, and then that these bodies would be fit for good works. That at least your body wouldn't hold you back in your great commission call. That it wouldn't be a hindrance in what Jesus calls you to, but it would be a help in his call for your life. All right, let me finish with three very brief counsels. So as you go along the way, those in this room who are exercise gurus and you're here to reinforce good patterns already in your life, these lessons may be really old to you. …

… what if i was going to answer that fit for what question i got this phrase paul used it twice second timothy 2 21 titus 3 1 he says he the phrase is ready for every good work that's the kind of fitness we want as christians we want to be fit ready to do good that doesn't mean we have to have world-class muscles or vo2 max be at the very top echelon of the fitness community the fit for good work you don't have to be at that level but to be at a place where you know what i can get up off the couch i don't have to stay here like i can go up the stairs if my wife left something downstairs, I can go get it and get back up to her. It's not a big deal. Or I was talking with Eric beforehand about carrying a child. I mean, not just a small one, but maybe carrying a larger child on your back on a hike to get them to the end of the hike. …

… but now look in chapter 3, verse 1. Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready for every good work. That is, look, when you Christians go out in public life, do it with a spirit of sweet submission, to speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers but gentle, showing all meekness unto all men. for we ourselves also were sometime foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lust and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. How are the people of Bellevue going to make the biggest impact on this city? Are we going to get bellicose? Are we going to be shouting? Are we going to be with blood in our eye and a crusade about this thing and that thing and everything we do not agree with? Do you know how we'll make the biggest impact on this city? By love, by service, by wisdom, by letting people see the beauty of the Lord Jesus Christ in us. …
