… and all ate the same spiritual food and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ. Our final passage for today is a short but familiar one from the book of Psalms. Here King David embraces in a personal way the notion that God is a rock. Listen again to Psalm 19, verse 14. Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. This is the word of God for you, the people of God. Thanks be to God. Back in the first century, a fellow by the name of Philo of Alexandria, a Jewish philosopher and theologian, described the hurdles faced by humans who risk opening their mouths and speaking a name for God. no one name philo argued can fully capture the essence of god you heard that actually in our opening hymn today no solitary name can adequately answer the question who is god there's no label out there that plums the depth and the breadth of the divine We have to acknowledge, says Philo, that it's absurd to try and name God. …

The New Testament has a strange assertion here. It says that the rock was Christ. See 1 Corinthians 10, verse 4. Jesus is the rock who gives in abundance even when we fail to meet the standard because God's love is the standard. And Jesus gives even when our quality doesn't pass the test. That's what he did for us by dying on the cross. When we did everything wrong, when we failed to hold the standard, when we came apart at the seams and struck him, Jesus gave in abundance. He suffered our consequences so that we could know God's love. God wants for each of us to reach this standard, but first he wants us. So he wears us in. Jesus put on our flesh. He wore our frame. And when God raised him from the dead, he raised us to his standard. He showed himself holy among us. And with his spirit in us, over a lifetime, God gradually wears us in. The Bible says that God wants his people to cling to him like a worn-in set of exercise pants. …
