… Answer, in the institution of the Lord's Supper, the Lord Jesus, on the night when he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, Take, eat, this is my body, which is broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, he also took the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me. For as often you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. This promise is repeated by Paul in these words. The cup of blessing that we bless is not the participation in the blood of Christ. The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread who we are many, who we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. Let's pray together. Father, as we come to you tonight, we want to acknowledge that we are people who forget. …
… That the Lord Jesus, on the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread. And when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, take, eat. This is my body which is broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same manner, he also took the cup after supper, saying, this cup is the new covenant in my blood. this do, as often as you drink it, again, in remembrance of me. He was already going to have to go through the unthinkable. And to add onto that, in a moment of great weakness, betrayal. And yet it didn't stop him. The night in which he was betrayed, he took the bread, he broke it. Thank you. It says, take, eat, this is my body, which is broken for you. …
… took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, This is My body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me. In the same way, after supper, He took the cup, saying, This cup is the new covenant in My blood. do this whenever you drink it in remembrance of Me. For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many among you are weak and sick. and a number of you have fallen asleep. But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment. When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world. …
… on the night on which he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread. After giving thanks, he broke it and said, this is my body, which is for you. Do this to remember me. And he did the same thing with the cup. After they had eaten, saying, this cup is the new covenant of my blood. Every time you drink it, do this to remember me. And every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you broadcast the death of the Lord until he comes. And really what we see at this meal is something so important. Jesus gathered his disciples. There was this community around him and around each other, and he gives thanks to God. He breaks this bread. He takes the cup, and then he does something powerful. He says, remember me. Every time you eat, remember me. And in John's gospel, John frames it this way, that Jesus points to himself and he says, as he's holding the bread, I am the bread of life. …
… And when he had given thanks for that bread, he broke it. And he said, this is my body, which is broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, he took the cup after supper and said, this cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this as often as you drink it. Do it in remembrance of me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. Verse 27, so then whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sin against the body and blood of the Lord. Let a person therefore examine himself before he partakes of this moment. In this way, let him eat the bread, eat the bread and drink the cup. For whoever eats and drinks without recognizing the body, without recognizing what God has created, he eats and drinks judgment unto himself, not blessing. This is why many of you, he says, are sick and ill among you and why many have fallen asleep or died. …
