Contentment or Corruption? — Part Two
Alistair Begg, 2026-09-22 · Scripture reading

… if you had a million, or if you just got by. We've got a roof over our head, and the kids have all been fed. Godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap, and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. And some people eager for money have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. Those few verses there in 1 Timothy 6 were the focus of our study this morning in verses 6, 7, and 8, and now we turn to verses 9 and 10. This morning we introduced the concept of contentment, and this evening we look now at the contrast that he gives to us with this picture of contentment. Let me read to you from Philip's paraphrase once again. For men who set their hearts on being wealthy, expose themselves to temptation. They fall into one of the world's traps and lay themselves open to all sorts of silly and wicked desires which are quite capable of utterly ruining and destroying their souls. Now, as we said this morning, it is important that we recognize that he is not addressing here people who are rich. He is not addressing rich people. He is going to address the rich, or he has done, and we'll come to that in the 17th verse, …

True Servants

… think that godliness is a means to financial gain. But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world and we can take nothing out of it, but if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people eager for money have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. Amen. Now, before we study these verses, let's go to the Lord, in prayer. Father, grant that you will enable us to hear your voice through your Word. As we listen to the voice of a mere man, we recognize that you choose to make your voice truly heard when your Word is truly taught. And so we pray that that might happen. Free us from every distracting influence, we pray, because of the seriousness of what we do, that we, the mere children of men, would listen for the voice of the living God. …

The Law of Contentment - Part 1
Rick Warren, 2026-08-25

… It is now till debt do us part. 1 Timothy 6 verse 7 says this. People who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin. He's talking about debt, financial ruin, and destruction. Why? Because when you long to be rich, you are a sucker for get-rich-quick schemes. If you are contented, you don't fall prey to get-rich-quick schemes. Nobody can scam you. You're not going to take risky things because you are contented. People who are discontent are always looking for a way to make a fast buck. They're always looking for the get-rich-quick scheme. They're always looking for the fast solution. the double your return on your money instantly, and all of that. And the Bible says over and over and over and over again, we'll see this when we get to investments, do not ever get involved in get-rich-quick schemes. If it's too good to be true, it is. And people who are always in a hurry to pay off their debts, instead of what the Bible teaches, little by little, systematically, sequentially, they're always in a hurry to get out of debt. …

… and pray for. This is a perfect moment to pause and look at one statement Paul makes in 1 Timothy 6, verse 7. Please, 1 Timothy 6. And having looked at it, go back to Job 1, 21 and put it in the margin of your Bible and memorize it this week. 1 Timothy 6, 7. It will help you when the interest rate goes up we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. If we have food and covering with these, verse 8 adds, we shall be content. Put that not only in the margin of Job 1.21, put that in another crease in your brain. We brought nothing. We take nothing. in the meantime we borrow everything as a good friend of mine tried to teach me years ago God owns it all I know your name is on the title I know it won't be when you're gone I know you built that place and you're proud of it that's nothing wrong with that nothing wrong with having it nice Nothing wrong with having things in it. …

Maybe This Morning
Levi Lusko, 2026-01-12

… Thank you. Nothing into this world. And it is certain we can carry nothing out. hearses don't pull u-halls you will not bring anything out of this world except what you've wisely laid up in heaven and sent on ahead so how do we confront the insatiable fleshly appetite for more because it is the height of human nature to always feel like i'm not happy here but if i had if I had, if I had, God did something great. You'd think, but if I had more, but if I saw more, but if I did more, but if I accomplished more, we need to tap into what has been called the hidden wholeness, the hidden wholeness. Thomas Merton, a Puritan preacher, he used to say, everything you need is already in your life. Everything you need. You came naked, you're leaving naked. So thus anything you collect temporarily temporarily along the way, you don't need. Having food and clothing, be happy. Sufficient for today is its troubles. Don't worry about tomorrow. …

Cultivating Contentment in the Home | Part 2
Adrian Rogers · Scripture reading

… really the bottom line of all that I have to say today. For we brought nothing into this world and it is certain we can carry nothing out. Somebody said you never saw a hearse with a U-Haul behind it. And having food and raiment as just something to eat and something to wear, let us therewith be content. That's all you have to have. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and hurtful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil which while some coveted after, there's our word, They have erred from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. Now that doesn't say that they that are rich. The Bible is not against riches. Abraham was rich. David was rich. Solomon was rich. Joseph of Arimathea was rich. But it says they that will be rich. What does that mean? They're putting things first. And when you put things first, you know what that is? …

… Listen to 1 Timothy 6, verse 6. But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain that we can carry nothing out, and having food and clothes, let us therewith be content. But they that will be rich. That doesn't say they that are rich. But those who have set their mind on being rich. Have you ever done that? Mister, you are in great danger. They whose determination is to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. for the love of money is the root of all evil. He doesn't say money is the root of all evil. It is the love of money which is the root of all evil. Every now and then some graduation commencement speaker will tell boys and girls now just make all the money you can just so you make it honestly. Boy, that's the worst advice I've ever heard. If you're trying to make all the money you can then you're going to be making money when you ought to be doing something else. You're going to be making money when you ought to be praying or going to church or be with the children or maybe in the park trying to teach your boy how to fly a kite. Listen, nobody should have a goal to make all the money he can. Sure, he has to provide for his family. But when you determine that you're going to …

I don't have a place to lay my head. But He wasn't discontent. Having food and clothing, let us therewith be content. But now watch this, verse 9.
