A Legacy of Grace | J.D. Greear

… Look at verse nine. You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich. The gospel is not about a God who approached you because he had needs. The gospel is about a God who comes to you, not because he wants your money. Make no mistake, he's the giver, we're the receiver. We were unimaginably poor. he was indescribably rich. So you need to forever banish out of your mind the idea that God needs anything from you. Remember the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Though he was unbelievably rich for your sake, he became poor so that you by his poverty might become rich. It doesn't flow this way, it flows this way. What that means is that it's never about the amount that you give. As if God only cares about money, all he cares about is the heart. Notice verse 12, Paul says it directly, for the readiness to give is there. …

… In Jesus, he was God. Yet, for your sake, he became poor so that you through his poverty might become rich. 2 Corinthians chapter 8. You'd think Jesus would receive a parade, a royal celebration. What did he receive? How about a donkey ride? A crowded town, a feed trough for a bassinet. He was born in a barn, for crying out loud. And we know what animals draw up onto stable floors. and to think that the first fragrance that welcomed the Son of God is one we do our best to avoid. yet isn't the mess of the manger the message of the manger? Isn't the stable itself the story? And the womb of Mary, doesn't her placenta have a place in the gospel? You see, if he was willing to go this far, to become this poor, to surrender so much? Do you think there's any person, any place, any problem that is off limits to him? does the way he came on that day not prove that he is willing to come your way on this day to show you his way home? …

… Jesus, last scripture, it says, Jesus, for you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor so that you, through his poverty, you might become rich. Come on, stand to your feet today. Through his poverty, he might become rich. I just love that scripture so much because Jesus, though he had everything, he gave it away and he gave it away so that us, his people, we could receive the blessing of God. And I'm praying for us that we don't try and go get blessed. We already through the cross, we already are blessed. Jesus, though he was rich, He became what? He became poor. So that through his sacrifice, we might become rich. Amen. We might not be rich in money today, but I'll tell you what we're rich in. We're rich in salvation. We're rich in faith. We're rich in strength. We're rich in joy. We're rich in peace. Come on, anybody thankful for what you're rich in today? …

Generosity in Community
David Platt, 2025-09-10

… how the world tells us to give and even how we think of giving in the church is radically different than from what than what Paul's going to show us here in 2 Corinthians chapter 8 verse 9 how does scripture teach us to give what we're going to do is we're going to read two passages one in chapter 8 and one in chapter 9 and basically the first one 2 Corinthians chapter 8 verse 1 through 9 is an example. Paul points to these churches in Macedonia. We're going to see him kind of lift them up as an example. And the second passage we're going to look at is 2 Corinthians chapter 9, verse 6 through 15. And what this is over here is basically some truths based on this example. So we're going to be all over the place going back and forth, just turning between these two chapters. But to try to get this picture, let's camp out on these two passages. 2 Corinthians chapter 8, verse 1. Paul writes, service to the saints. And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God's will. So we urged Titus, since he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion this act of grace on your part. But just as you excel in everything, in faith, in speech, and knowledge, in complete earnestness, and in your love for us, Okay, go over to the next chapter. …

… 2 Corinthians 8, 9. You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ That though he was rich Yet for your sakes he became poor So that you by his poverty might become rich Our generosity Is not An effort at all To pay him back It's not what we do in Christian giving Rather We give because his giving Changes us It changes us on the inside And he keeps giving to us Let's go. I love the way that Paul summarizes Jesus' teaching in Acts chapter 20 verse 35 if you're reading through the book of Acts you got a red letter Bible you're expecting a lot of red letters in the Gospels it's a little surprising at the end of Acts 20 like I thought he ascended and now Paul is giving us what I think is an outstanding summary of Jesus' ethic and it's especially clear about Jesus' teaching in the book of Luke. Luke and Acts go together. Here's what Acts 20, 35 says. Remember the words of Jesus, how he himself said, it is more blessed to give than to receive. …

The Thread of Grace - Louie Giglio
Louie Giglio, 2024-12-08

… Paul wrote in Corinthians, For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich. How do you get rich? Because of the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. And grace is what awaits us in heaven. We saw this in our Revelation collection. I'll just jump into a few places in chapter 5. And they sang a new song. Do you know what it was? it was a song. it's a song about what God did you are worthy to take the scroll and open its seals this is Jesus glorified in heaven surrounded by creatures and elders this is Jesus at the epicenter of worship fire in his eyes, hair white like wool, sun like the sun shining at full strength. This Jesus is glorious and magnificent. But what is the song? The song is you are worthy. Why are you worthy? Because you were slain and with your blood, you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. And you have made. …
