… Verse one of chapter two, Acts. When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. This is the 120 people. Suddenly, a noise like a strong blowing wind. Doesn't say it was a strong blowing wind. It says it was a noise that sounded like a hurricane. came from heaven and filled the whole house. So there's this big noise going on in their house. Nobody knows where it's coming from, where they were sitting. And it says then number two, they saw something like flames of fire. It doesn't say it was fire. It says they saw something like flames of fire that were separated and stood over each person. Now there's 120 people in the room. So that means there's 120 of these little flames, like things, hanging over each individual head. That's gonna be weird. So what's going on here? Over each person there. And then it says, number three, they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and they began to speak with different languages by the power that the Holy Spirit was giving them. …
Acts chapter 2, verse number 1. when the day of Pentecost came, they were all in one place. You may be seated. When the day of Pentecost came, they were all in one place. I want to preach today using as a subject, I'm just trying to find my place. Look at the person beside you and tell them, that's all I've been trying to do. That's all. Just trying to find my place. British-born black writer Zadie Smith once said, Not belonging is akin to having the feeling one experiences while playing musical chairs, turning around and realizing you have nowhere to sit. Abraham Maslow placed love and belonging as the third tier of hierarchy needs, positioned above survival. I want you to hear this. You cannot fully become who you are meant to be without experiencing the security of being wanted somewhere. without belonging, the byproduct is not feeling lonely. Without a sense of belonging, you feel unreal. It's hard fitting in when you're outstanding. You are made to feel ignorant because of your intelligence. …
… There's a sound that comes from another world. Came and filled the house where they were, and there are tongues of fire. And Hebrews 1 quotes Psalms 104, speaking of the angels who remember on the house of God ascend and descend, because it's a gate between worlds. This is weird, I know. I'm just trying to describe to you what to expect. a wind I've studied some of the words here in this chapter and they're fascinating and one of the words for this sound comes from heaven the word sound there's a roar roar it's this roar of heaven it's this thunderous roar that is released from one world to fill a room of 120 people in another world and they began to speak with other tongues as the spirit gave them utterance verse 5 there were dwellings in Jerusalem devout men of every nation under heaven when the sound occurred a multitude came together let me read these verses for you they were confused verse 7 says they were amazed and marveled verse 12 says they were amazed and perplexed verse 13 says they were mocking so that sounds like a revival to me that sounds anybody who expects to get a revival without those manifestations You're dreaming. …
verse 1 through 7 Yeah, it's Acts chapter 2, verse 1 through 7. Stand on your feet if you would. And I want you to listen at this closely. And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all in one accord in one place. Do you not know that's why the spirit of division always comes against the kingdom of God or your family or your household? Because Satan is afraid of our unity. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as a mighty rushing wind. And it filled all the house where they were sitting. Somebody holler, fill my house. Not just fill my church, fill my house. fill my car, fill my job, fill my business, fill my children, fill my grandchildren. I want a great outpouring of the Holy Ghost. I want to see the cup run over. Anybody walk past my house is going to fill the Holy Ghost because God is going to take me into overflow. Shout yes, somebody. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as a fire, and it sat upon each of them. …
… lift your hands to the Lord Jesus Christ and when the day of Pentecost had fully come they were all together in one place and on one accord and suddenly there was a sound from heaven it sounded like rushing mighty wind it filled the whole house where they were sitting it appeared under them cloven tongues like fire it sat on each of them and they all began to speak in other languages as the Spirit of God would give them the ability to speak. They that worship must worship in spirit and in truth. As your hands are extended, I want you to take a moment and consider what life would have been like if the Lord had not found you when he did had God not snatched you out of the hand of the enemy where would I be where could I be where I should have been but because he has been so faithful he's deserving of all the glory the honor and worship lift your hands throw your head back begin to let your soul make her boast in the Lord open up your mouth give our God worship in this house oh yara bandio shatabaya come on that's right louder than that open your mouth give him worship hallelujah oh I hear the sound of victory in this house come on worship him that's it that's it that's it that's it come on that's it come on that's it hallelujah now come on throw that head back give God the loudest Shabbat …
… Hallelujah. hallelujah the bible tells us in acts 2 and 1 it says when the day of pentecost came they were all in one place somebody say in one place in one place can i declare to you that we gotta be in the same place not just physically but mentally and spiritually can i say to you gone are the days of occupying space with people for just any old reason. Living in the same house, but sleeping in separate bedrooms. Living in the same house, but disconnected. No love, no affection like two ships passing in the night. No goals together, no plans together. You are together on paper, but you are disconnected in the spirit. For the Bible declares, how can two walk together unless they what? Agree. And so that says to us that it's time to be divinely aligned. Time to walk in lockstep with each other as we walk with God. It's time to walk in harmony and walk in purpose. Look at somebody and say, it's time to be in agreement. …
… Listen to this. When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound, like the blowing of a violent wind, came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Now where they were staying in Jerusalem, God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven, when they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment because each one heard them speaking in his own language. Utterly amazed, they asked, are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, residents of Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia, Pontus in Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues. Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, what does this mean? Somehow, I ever made fun of them and said they have had too much wine. These guys are loaded. What in the world is going on here? Awaken our affections so that we obey your spirit. Now, these verses that we just read are so packed full of meaning. In order to understand what's going on here, we've got to understand some of …
… You ever notice this? Acts chapter two, verse one. When the day of Pentecost arrived. Do you know what Pentecost means? it means 50th huh it was celebrated on the 50th day after the passover so seven times seven weeks 49 days after that plus one much like the year of jubilee and again it's the first day of the week when suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind filled the entire house where they were sitting and divided tongues as a fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Christian, you wanna talk about rest? You have the Holy Spirit of God resting on you so that you can walk in his rest at every moment and so that you can lead other people in this weary world. This week, in this city, and among all the nations to find rest in God, not just in this world, but in the world to come. …
… is Jesus on one side and then the Holy Spirit on the other. So in Acts, here's the way it begins. Here's the second person, Acts 2, verses 1 through 4. so that day that Peter gets up and speaks that day that he boldly proclaims Jesus here's the other person that comes into him starting in verse one says when the day of Pentecost came they were all together in one place suddenly the sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven it filled the whole house where they were sitting they saw what seemed to be tongues of fire separated and come to rest on each of them all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues that the Spirit enabled them so some of you have not placed your faith in Jesus and you are dead in your sin and what I would want you to do is to hear the voice of Jesus calling you from the grave say rise and shine it is time to rise and shine it's time for you to get up out of that grave close it's time for you to come into a relationship with me some of you have been following at a distance for so long. …
… Look at the text. The text says that when the day of Pentecost had come. Now, you got to stop right there because that's the beginning of chapter 2. How does chapter 1 end? Chapter 1 ends with them waiting. They are told by Jesus to wait right there. Wait in hostile territory. Wait in Jerusalem where your Lord, watch this, had been messed over by the authorities as they got together with the occupying forces of the oppressive Roman Empire. You wait right there. I know the territory is hostile, but don't you go nowhere. I know folk are looking at you and talking about you, but don't you go nowhere. You let your presence stay right in that precarious place and then watch what happens and for 10 days they wait. Wait. Can I be honest? Why is it, this is me, not you, why is it that I'm in a hurry but God ain't? Now, I'm not speaking for you because I know you're patient and you just know how to wait. …
… a language you don't understand. Let me show you two examples of this from the book of Acts. The first one, probably the most famous one, Acts 2.1. When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven the sound of a mighty rushing wind. And it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as a fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. And they began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now, real quick, This had to be an unbelievable experience. When it says a sound like a rushing wind, in Greek, that does not mean a gentle breeze, even a stiff breeze. It means hurricane force wind. Imagine what that would be like in the room that you're sitting in. Suddenly there's a sound like a tornado, like it's a freight train that's coming. And then these tongues of fire appear on the heads of every church member. …
… Verse 1. and when the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place and suddenly there came a sound from heaven. as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the house. All right. A sound came from where? Heaven. Heaven. And it came to where? A house. To a house. It came from one world, and it filled another world. Yes? A sound came from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and they filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them divided tongues as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. Interesting. What are the two elements that you see in these two verses, the two natural elements? What are they? What are they? Wind and fire. Hmm. and of the angels he says who makes his ministers wind his angels wind and his ministers a flame of fire Hebrews 1, quoting a passage from the Old Testament, from Psalms 104. So here in this upper room, there's 120 people there. …
