… and turn to God and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is to you, to your children, those who are far away, and to all who have called on the Lord our God. Then Peter continued preaching for a long time, strongly urging all the listeners, save yourselves from this crooked generation. Those who believe what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day, about 3,000 in all. Wow, stop there. 3,000 new believers. It's amazing. On one day, after one sermon, why did Peter have such an amazing response to his message? Point number one is he knew his audience or his congregation. He knew that some of the people he was speaking to literally played a role in the crucifixion of Jesus. Can you imagine if maybe one of those Roman guards was there that pounded the spikes into the hands of Jesus? The religious leaders were there for sure listening in, very critical. …
… brothers what should we do? Peter replied every one of you should repent of your sins and turn to God and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is to you, to your children, those who are far away and to all who have called on the Lord our God. Then Peter continued preaching for a long time. I underlined that verse in my Bible. He continued preaching for a long time. See long sermons are good sometimes, people. But anyway. He continued preaching for a long time, strongly urging all the listeners, save yourselves from this crooked generation. Those who believe what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day, about 3,000 in all. Wow. Stop there. 3,000 new believers. It's amazing. On one day, after one sermon. Why did Peter have such an amazing response to his message? He knew his audience or his congregation. He knew that some of the people he was speaking to literally played a role in the crucifixion of Jesus. …
… Peter says to them, Turn back to God, repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit because the promise is for you and for your children, for everyone who is far off, for all whom the Lord our God calls to himself. And with many other words, he bore witness to them and pleaded with them, saying, Be saved. All of you, be saved from this crooked generation. and those who received his word were baptized. And there were added that day about 3,000 people. Which isn't quite 21,000 like in France this year, but a good start. My friend, Chris, who almost killed a kid at that Christian summer camp, explained how that whole afternoon for him was just miserable. After he'd watched the young man on the zipline slam into the dock at near-terminal velocity, Chris was grateful that the kid was conscious. They didn't know how badly he was hurt, so they loaded him on a stretcher and someone drove him to the local hospital. …
… tempted to say, what do I do? You haven't cut them to the heart. All right, and what does Peter say to them? And how important this is, everybody? Listen, repent, be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The whole church is in those lines. The whole of the church. Repent, right? Metanoia in Greek. Go beyond the mind you have. It means turn around. It's the life you've been leading. That ain't it. If Jesus Christ is Lord, he's the voice you listen to. He's the keeper of the gate. You're the sheep. He's the shepherd. Well, then you think like him, talk like him, act like him, react as he would. Seeing the world through the lens of Jesus becomes your whole life. That's what repentance means. If you hear the gospel, you're cut to the heart, but then you say, well, go back to the old way I lived. …
… They had all believed on Christ for the forgiveness of their sins. in Acts chapter 2 verse 38 through 41 and what follows after that it was their faith in Christ that united them together now when we see they had everything in common we immediately start to think in the physical realm and the possessions and that's exactly what this passage goes on to talk about but what we've got to realize is these guys had a lot more in common than just sharing their possessions I want you to see two truths here number one I want you to see that they belonged to each other in Christ. These early believers believed that they belonged to each other in Christ. And it's evidenced by the way we see this word fellowship, koinonia, come up over and over again in the New Testament. Let me take you on a little tour. Turn to the right, and I want you to go to 1 Corinthians chapter 10. Go to 1 Corinthians chapter 10. You'll go to Romans and then come to 1 Corinthians. I want you to look at 1 Corinthians chapter 10. And I'm going to show you some different places where we see this New Testament word koinonia. Sometimes it's translated fellowship, other times it's translated different things. And so I want you to maybe even circle it in your Bible and put a line out to the side that says koinonia. This is what they had in common. …
… and you see different instances where the name of Christ is mentioned. You see in Acts chapter 2, verse 38, the name is preached and 3,000 people are saved. Acts 3 and 4, the name is used and a couple thousand more are added to their number. Acts chapter 8, Philip is preaching and the name of Christ is preached and many more people come to know Christ. Acts chapter 9 says that Saul, who became Paul, came in touch and face to face with the name of Christ. We see it progress even more. In Acts chapter 15, the Bible talks about how people were literally giving their lives for the name of Christ. In Acts chapter 16, there's someone who has a spirit in them that Paul casts out. And he said, in the name of Jesus Christ, come out. Then I want you to look over at Acts chapter 19. I want you to see the power of the name of Christ. And a very interesting story. …
… heard this, they were cut to their heart. Look at their reaction. They were cut to the heart, and they said to Peter and the other apostles, brothers, what shall we do? Peter replied, repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, for all whom the Lord our God will call. With many other words, he warned them and he pleaded with them, save yourselves from this corrupt generation. And those who accepted his message were baptized and about 3,000 were added to their number that day. Now let's say verse 42 together. Many of you have it in your hearts. They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. I want you to see the effects of the word, three different effects that come out of this. …
… what am I so thankful for that God has given as a gift to me? The first gift that comes to mind to me is right off of the top, the gift of the Holy Ghost. The Bible said in Acts 2, 38, repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins. And you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For this promise is unto you and unto your children and unto your children's children. And I just want to say this morning that out of all the gifts that God has given me, so many blessings, the gift of the precious Holy Ghost. When he filled me with the baptism of the Holy Ghost, just like the Bible talks about in Acts 2, just like the Bible talks about in the books of the Bible and going all through the New Testament. And I was filled with the Holy Spirit in a revival on a Friday night. …
… When he stood and he said, you want to know what to do? Acts 2.38. and Peter said unto them, Repent and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost for this promise is unto you and unto your children and to them that are far off even as many as the Lord. That ball is still reverberating and hitting free chapel this morning right there where you're watching us the power of the gospel, the power of the church, all from a loser. Can you see the other disciples coming up after that service was over and 3,000 were saved off a three-minute sermon? That's 1,000 a minute. They're coming up with the scroll of Joel because he preached from the book of Joel. This is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel. They're saying, what is this? He said, this is that. This is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit Joel talked about. Can you see them bringing a little copy saying, would you give me your autograph right here? …
… Get in the water if you want the past to be over. The water mixed and baptized in Jesus' name, Acts 2.38. Repent, every one of you, repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins. And you shall receive the Holy Ghost, for this promise is unto you and to your children, them that are far off, as many as the Lord our God shall call. And then in Matthew 28, it says in Matthew chapter 28, the Great Commission go into all the nations, baptizing them in the name. Why? Why? I'm going to tell you why in a minute. You're going to get this. Baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, Jesus Christ, the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. And lo, this is the last thing Jesus said. And he goes up, and lo, I'm with you always, even until the end of the world. Notice this, Moses' first plague was turning water. …
… Listen. He said, repent and let each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children For all who are far off As many as the Lord our God shall call himself With many other words he solemnly testified And kept on exhorting them Saying be saved from this perverse generation And listen So convincing So convicting So compelling For them to make a decision He gave them the opportunity And 3,000 of them were saved If some of you were to give an invitation to your church would fall out in the faint. Or they'd wonder what in the world happened to you. But let me ask you a question. If this world's going to hell and, brother, it's going fast, if this world is hell-bound without Jesus Christ, and if Jesus Christ is the only hope for this world, and you are a God-called, God-anointed servant of God, and you present the only message that'll keep a man out of hell and get him into heaven, the only message that will equip a man to live in this day victoriously, if that be true, then should you not be preaching, listen, sermons that are compelling and convicting and persuasive that are calling for a decision in people's relationship to Jesus Christ.
… who is given to every single believer upon our salvation. This is what Peter was preaching in Acts chapter 2, verse 38. When you were saved, the Holy Spirit came into your life to indwell and to seal you as a child of God. That's God's gift. Secondly, the gifts of the Spirit, G-I-F-T-S, are those capabilities, those abilities that God gives to each individual that fit His purpose and plan for our life. The third word is the fruit. That is the fruit of the Spirit, which you know in Galatians chapter 5, speaks of the character that the Holy Spirit intends to build in and through our life as a result of our being submissive to Him and walking in His will and in His way. And that is the fruit of the Spirit, which we know well, of love, joy, peace, goodness, gentleness, self-control. So, we're talking about primarily the gifts of the Spirit. That is, those abilities and those capacities that God gives us when we trust Him as our personal Savior, and then we begin to walk out and live out the life. …
