Sermons on John 8:44

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies. You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and doesn’t stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks on his own; for he is a liar, and the father of lies.Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and standeth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.

… by truth. On the other hand, Satan is the essence of untruth. In John 8, 44, Jesus describes Satan this way. He said, you are of your father, the devil, and therefore you want to do the desires of your father. Satan was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he, that's talking about Satan, speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and he is the father of lies. In what sense is Satan the father of lies? Think about it. The very first words recorded from Satan's lips in the Bible were words of a lie. Satan said to Eve, said, you're not really going to die if you eat of this tree? God didn't really say that, did he? And he's been lying ever since. Ladies and gentlemen, what the word of God is saying is this. When you and I lie, we tell an untruth. We are behaving more like a child of Satan than we are a child of God. And that's why God hates lying. Solomon also warned against lying. In Proverbs 6 verse 12, he said, a worthless person, a wicked man is one who walks with a false mouth. Proverbs 12, 19, truthful lips will be established forever, but a lying tongue is only for a moment. Or Proverbs 21, verse six, the getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor, the pursuit of death. Now, when Solomon says we ought to run …

Reasons for Rejection │ Msg 5/14
Chuck Swindoll, 2026-07-07

… Either I surrender or I fight. Now, that's the way we find Jesus in this crowd that surrounded him in John chapter 8, verses 12 to 59. He is not around a crowd that had never heard of God. I want to make that clear. He is in a context of religion. As a matter of fact, one of the three great festivals of the year is where he was at the time he spoke the words of John 8, the Feast of Tabernacles. Remember the other time that he brought a sword? He said, Are any of you thirsty? Come to me and drink. They were pouring out the water from that sacred vessel on that sacred altar, and he said, Wait a minute! Let me tell you where real water is. It's in me, and you come to me, you'll never thirst again. Oh, that was a sword. And it started an argument that still hasn't ceased. Now, he comes to this place called the treasury, according to verse 20 of chapter 8. …

… Because you were not able to listen to my word. you are of your father the devil and the desires of your father you want to do he was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in truth because there is no truth in him when he speaks a lie he speaks from his own resources for he is a liar and the father of it but because i tell you the truth you do not believe me which of you convicts me of sin and if i tell you the truth why do you not believe me he who is of god hears god's words therefore you do not hear because you are not of God. Wow. Talk about getting torched. So the world lies under the influence of the wicked one. The word that's used here is the sway, which means to recline or be laid out. It's like they're lounging in it. Like they have no problem with it, but they also don't understand the consequences of it. To be under the sway of the wicked one or the influence of the wicked when. Those without Christ are under his, that's the prince of the power of the air, his influence. …

THE TRUTH ABOUT LYING
Chris King, 2026-03-15

… Did you know that? John 8, 44, he was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. We are never more like Satan than when we lie. We never sound more like the evil one than when we're telling something that's not true. Some of us need to learn a new language. We have the language of lying. I got to tell you, learning a new language, even especially at my age, it's hard. We spent 11 years in Miami, my wife and my kids. And I'll tell you, it was difficult. Everything there was in Spanish. My kids actually went to Spanish magnet schools. So from the time they were in fifth grade on, they were in Spanish speaking schools. My wife, her first language is Spanish. Your boy, nada. I was there for 11 years. I think I learned less Spanish before I left. …

… what thought and make it obedient unto Christ that's why I believe that Jesus prepares us in John 8 44 when he told us y'all the devil is a liar I believe that Jesus wanted the believer prepared for the battle of deception because in spiritual warfare the devil will try to mess with your mind yeah the devil will try to convince you of things that God never said to you nor about you In fact, Jesus goes a step further to say the truth isn't even in him. I believe that Jesus wants the believer fortified against the battle with the father of lies. Tap somebody and tell them that's the enemy's strategy. Tell them the enemy seeks to lie to you. See, in spiritual battle, one may face an internal struggle within oneself involving competing thoughts, feelings, desires, or values. Sometimes it's a conflict with others that controls your emotional stability and interpersonal beliefs. Sometimes it's the battle of interpersonal conflicts of motives within oneself, i.e. my duty versus my desire. …

… As I said two weeks ago, lying and anger are the default postures of fallen humanity, because Satan, John 8, verse 44, is a liar and a murderer. So there's nothing more devilish than lying and hating anger. But the anger of the Lord is always righteous. The anger of the Lord is always righteous. Listen to Numbers 25, 3 and 4. So Israel joined themselves to Baal of Peor, that was the god of the Moabites and Midianites, in other words, an idol. And the Lord was angry against Israel. The Lord said to Moses, "'Take all the leaders of the people and execute them in broad daylight before the Lord, so that the fierce anger of the Lord may turn away from Israel.'" God's anger could only be ameliorated in the execution of idolaters on that occasion. This is what Jeremiah in Jeremiah 4 and Jeremiah 12 calls the fierce anger of the Lord. And it is always measured appropriately. It is always just. It is always right. …

… it for ourselves. And where does it come from? Jesus said in John 8 verse 44, You are of your father the devil, and the lust of your father ye will do. How did Satan become Satan? He coveted the place that God had. He said, I want to be like the Most High. I want the throne of God. I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. How did He encourage Eve to sin? Through covetousness. Take that which was not hers. She's surrounded in a garden, a beautiful garden, but there's one piece of fruit that she didn't have. And He said, you go ahead and take this. I was reading an article about some MBA students at prestigious Duke University. And they asked these students in order that they might teach them more, these MBA students going into business, what do you want to learn? How do you want us to teach you? Let me just quote from the article. For several years MBA students at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business were asked to write a personal strategic plan. The question posed to them was, what do you want to be when you grow up? …

… forth and came from God. Nor have I come of myself, but he sent me. Why do you not understand my speech, because you're not able to listen to my word. You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. And when he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. But because I tell you the truth, you do not believe me. Which of you convicts me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? He who is of God hears God's words. Therefore, you do not hear because you are not of God. He who has ears to hear the word of God, let them hear. Let us pray. Father, we need help in understanding the words of Jesus that we've just read. …
