… there are people in need all around the area. And he healed many who were ill with various diseases and cast out many demons and was not permitting the demons to speak because they knew who he was. Jesus says to them, you be silent. Don't speak. And they did not speak. It must have been magnificent. He didn't come for the purpose merely to heal and to impress people. He came to preach the good news of the truth. But this corroborated that he was not simply another spokesman. He was from God. And he was able to heal at will under the power of the Spirit who filled him. They have never seen anything like it. Where do we find him within a matter of hours? Well, first of all, he's got to get some sleep. So between verses 34 and 35, he finds a place in the home where he can lie down. He's resting. But I love the beginning of 35. In the early morning while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place and was praying there. …
There's something fascinating, even captivating, about reading the words of another person's journal. This is especially true if they've already gone on before us. And one of the things left in their legacy are their own words. And always in their own handwriting, you can enter into their world as you read those words. and sometimes you can feel like you're a part of the threads woven into the fabric of their lives as they live them out in yesteryear. I'm having that experience right now as I am working my way through the 769-page book written by Doris Kearns Goodwin, Pulitzer Prize-winning author. Her book is titled No Ordinary Time. What's fascinating is that it is the account of life behind the scenes in the White House, mainly during the Second World War years. I was only a lad then, and so my world was altogether different from the world of, of course, the president and the first lady and the cabinet and those who surrounded that difficult time in our nation's history. …
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went off to a solitary place where he prayed. Simon and his companions went to look for him, and when they found him, they exclaimed, Everyone is looking for you. Jesus replied, Let us go somewhere else, to the nearby villages, so that I can preach there also. That is why I have come. So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons. Father, we ask now that you will help us in studying the Bible for clarity of thought, for brevity of expression. for a sense that we are under the tutelage of you, the living God, that you are the one who teaches through your Word by the Holy Spirit, so that we might be prepared to sit up, to pay attention, and to say, Speak, Lord, speak to me. And we ask it humbly in Christ's name. Amen. Easter has reminded us of the fact that what we are dealing with is historical material, that Easter itself is a historical event, that it actually happened, that it involved real people in real places at a real moment in time. So much so that when we ask why it is that the small band of followers—men and women who had already begun to follow Jesus—why it was that although they had been in hiding for fear of their lives, they had come out of hiding to face the challenge that was not only presented by the religious authorities but also by the persecuting Roman Empire. Why it …
Look at somebody with all the attitude you can muster and just say, you can't talk to me. Look them on the other side and say, I said you can't talk to me. Now throw your head back and tell the devil you can't talk to me. May be seated in the presence of the Lord. There's a sweet anointing in this house already. For years I have come to the first chapter of the book of Mark and sat silently on tippy-toe in solemn reflection trying to wrap my mind around this particular chapter. And I must tell you as we start this conversation that this is one of the great chapters of the Bible. Time does not permit me to give you a full perusal of what is contained therein, but let me assure you, my friends, that this chapter reveals to us the manifold genius of the power of Jesus Christ. One cannot come to this chapter and not have an understanding of who Jesus is beyond the provincial limits of religion and state-sanctioned, industrialized spirituality. …
