Are You Ready for Some Good News?, Part 1
Chuck Swindoll, 2026-10-09 · Scripture reading

… and I am not fit to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I baptize you with water. but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. In those days, Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Immediately coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opening and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him and a voice came out of the heavens. You are my beloved son. In you I am well pleased. immediately the spirit impelled him to go out into the wilderness and he was in the wilderness 40 days being tempted by Satan and he was with the wild beasts and the angels were ministering to him Opening words are designed to command attention. Every once in a while, I have a chance to work with young preachers, and I always talk to them about the importance of introductions. People's time is important. Don't waste it. Get right into it. I can still hear the words of my mother. I could wrap up all of her counsel in four words. …

A Man with a Message (Part 2 of 2)
Alistair Begg, 2026-09-11

… than I, the thongs of whose sandals I'm not worthy to stoop down and untie. I will baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. In other words, he knows his place. It's important to know your place, isn't it? If you've ever been a best man, I hope you remember to be the best man. You're not the groom. People are not really too interested in you. Don't turn it into the best man show. In fact, that's just a little word of caution to any of you who are about to be a best man for the first time. Let me warn you against thinking that this is your great moment to shine. Let everybody know how good you are with your jokes and all the stories you're able to tell. We're not remotely interested. We came to see the bride, mainly, and a little bit of the groom. But you, you're not even in the game. So I suggest you say as little as possible and get out as fast as you can. That's just from me. Do without what you choose. But anyway, I say that because John himself picks up that very picture in describing himself. He said, you know, I am not here as the groom. I am here as the best man. In fact, I am here, and I have significance in fulfilling the promises of God, but the one who comes after me is the significant one. I, says John, can only take you so far, but he will provide the very …

A Man with a Message (Part 1 of 2)
Alistair Begg, 2026-09-10 · Scripture reading

… than I, the thongs of whose sandals I'm not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. Thanks be to God for his word. Father, we pray that as we turn now to the Bible, that you will enable us both to speak and to listen in such a way that your word comes home with conviction and compulsion to our minds, calling us to repentance and to faith and to obedience and to all the encouragement that is provided for us in thinking again of the good news. Help us to this end, we humbly pray, In Jesus' name, amen. I make no apology for beginning as basically as I possibly can, because I recognize that Sunday by Sunday, in a congregation or in congregations like these, there are people at all stages of understanding when it comes to the things of the Bible, indeed, when it comes to thinking about God at all. So, let me begin at the very beginning, since it's always a very good place to start. The Bible is ultimately a book about Jesus. …

The Beginning of the Gospel (Part 1 of 2)
Alistair Begg, 2026-09-08 · Scripture reading

… the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. Amen. Father, help us now as we turn to the Bible, that you will be our teacher, that the Holy Spirit will enable us to think properly, to respond humbly, and that we might find that, as it were, Christ stands in the midst of us, not only as the one who orchestrates our praise, but also as the one who preaches the Word home to our hearts. Only you, O God, can accomplish this, and it is to you we look. In Jesus' name, amen. In 1975, in a book that John Stott had penned in conjunction with a missionary conference, he wrote as follows, Nothing hinders evangelism more than the widespread loss of confidence in the truth, relevance, and power of the gospel. Let me give that to you again. Nothing, he wrote hinders evangelism more than the widespread loss of confidence in the truth, relevance, and power of the gospel. If the polls that came out around the holiday period are to be believed, then we are confronting a situation in contemporary America that is unlike much that has gone before. It has been understandable that those who have rejected the New Testament, who have turned their back on the Bible, have very little to say to their friends and neighbors about who Jesus is and what he's done. And such a loss of confidence in the gospel in that arena …

God gives you identity before assignment. So Jesus comes to John. He's like, John, you got to baptize me. And John the Baptist like, Jesus, you're crazy. There's no way that I could ever baptize you. I'm not worthy to baptize you. And Jesus goes, I must be baptized. I just want to say this. If you've never been baptized, if Jesus had to be baptized, you and I must be baptized. Jesus goes, I've got to get baptized. …

The (Second) Greatest Person Ever Born
Skip Heitzig, 2026-03-22

… I am not worthy to stoop down and loose. I indeed baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. four characteristics about this second greatest person. First, he was anticipated by Scripture. That's how Mark begins the gospel. Mark begins by quoting two Old Testament prophets. One is Malachi, Malachi chapter 3. The other is Isaiah, Isaiah chapter 40. and that is in verse 2 and 3. As it is written in the prophets, behold, I send my messenger before your face who will prepare your way before you. That's Malachi. This is Isaiah, the voice of one crying in the wilderness. Prepare the way of the Lord, make his path straight. Mark is going back to the Old Testament to prove the point that Jesus didn't just show up as some random guy that people said, oh, he must be the Messiah. But that Jesus was anticipated by the Old Testament prophets, and one of those prophecies, or two prophets, anticipated John, who would point to Jesus. Notice that he is called my messenger in verse 2. …

Life Narrows Down
Guest speaker, 2025-08-30

As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Christ, John answered them all, saying, I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn. But the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. So with many other exhortations, he preached good news to the people. What is the good news today? It is this, that life narrows down and we look to Jesus. How does the narrowing come to you? Through advancing age, through illness, through adversity. Yes, such troubles come and should shift our focus more and more to the eternal. Now, the best narrowing comes through daily repentance. We are not to go into the wilderness just once to hear John's message and then return to our old ways of doing things. …

The Sin God Never Forgives (Mark 3:20-35)
John MacArthur, 2023-05-14 · Scripture reading

… I, and I am not fit to stoop down and untie the thong of His sandals. I baptize you with water, He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. Here He affirms the deity of Christ as the one superior to even the greatest of all prophets and the one who can dispense the very member of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, into the life of those who believe. You have immediately after that His baptism, and when He comes out of the water in chapter verse 10, the heavens open up, and again referring to the Holy Spirit, the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him. It was not a dove. It didn't look like a dove. It's simply the picture of the Spirit's presence in some visible form landing on Jesus in a gentle way. And at that moment, not only is the Spirit thus affirming His deity, but a voice comes out of the heavens, You are My beloved Son in You. I am well pleased. Immediately the Spirit impelled Him to go out into the wilderness. …
