… part is the warning the encouragement and this is why i think he used this illustration is to bolster the faith of these disciples of his. He is going to tell them to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. The enterprise that they are a part of has very, very small beginnings. And the kingdom of God is going to grow exponentially in size and influence. Now the mustard seed, notice that Jesus said it's the smallest seed. This kind of bothers a lot of people. See, the Bible isn't accurate because Jesus said it's the smallest seed. Okay. There are smaller seeds in the world. Begonia seeds, poppy seeds, a few others are fine as dust, but this is the smallest seed a first century farmer planted in his garden, put in his earth. That is the point. And this was a common proverbial expression of something very tiny becoming something enormous. A mustard seed tree can grow to about 15 feet tall. …
… it could be that God didn't even choose him well I'm not God so I don't know he just told me to go into all the world and preach the gospel to everybody. Sorry, I couldn't resist. he will yet fill your mouth with laughing your lips with rejoicing those who hate you will be clothed with shame and the dwelling place of the wicked will come to nothing now Job answers Bildad that little shoe height Job answered and said, truly, I know it is so, but how can a man be righteous before God? You know, Bill Dadd, you're right. I'm not as righteous as God, but then who is? if you're comparing the righteousness of God and God's character, any human being is going to fall short. There is none righteous, Paul said, and three times the Bible says, none righteous, no, not one. Psalm 130, the psalmist said, if you, Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand. Nobody could stand. So you're right. I agree with you. I'm not perfectly righteous. …
… and he's told us to go out and be fishers of men. Jesus told us in Mark 16 15 go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature and it is such a dire time in our country to do this such an urgent time our country is in such bad shape in so many ways and the only hope is the message of the gospel that's it there will be no moral awakening that will sweep our country apart from a work of God. We must preach the gospel and pray for revival. All other attempts to change our society will fail. All other attempts run a distant second to those two objectives. Preach the gospel. And one thing is clear in the early church, and that is that the first century church dramatically impacted their world. They made a difference. They were a church on the move that touched those around them. It was said of them, and not in a complimentary way in Acts 17, 6, these who have turned the world upside down have come here too. A backhanded compliment. What a wonderful thing that could be said of us, right? …
… The great commission, Matthew 28, go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creatures. That was said to a bunch of blue collar fishermen, most of whom had never left Israel. I would argue never has a more important assignment been given to a less qualified group of people. What do they do? What do they do? I did exactly what most of us would have done. We'd have pulled together a committee, a task force. We'd have gotten out of whiteboard. We said, all right, we got to raise some money. Peter, you do that. We got to plan some conferences. John, that's going to be on you. We're going to need some apologetics resources. Thomas, why don't you pull those together? They didn't do any of that, did they? No, Jesus told them what to do. I want you to go and do nothing. Acts 1, go and do nothing except pray and wait for the Holy Spirit to come upon you. Hey, can't you hear, can't you hear some of their objections? You can't tell me Peter wasn't like, do nothing. You want us to start a movement? If you want us to start a movement, we got a plan. We got to fundraise. We got to get out of this train. We got to get t-shirts printed. …
… Sometimes I don't. and that's God's business hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah dying churches forget the command to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature we are here to go we are not here just for me and my family if this church ever stops going we go through television we go through internet we go all over the world we go physically we go we preach the gospel and that's what God has called us to do and when you understand that I thought this was interesting can I finish this little message I got one or two quick things maybe just one but I thought it was so interesting that the churches that were dying they said that on average the average pastor stays at a church four to five years and then that's called the honeymoon period where the guy can't do any wrong and everybody loves him and then trouble breaks out in the church and the people begin to devour one another and they have fried preacher for lunch after service And if all you do is whine, whine, whine about a preacher, something's wrong with you. …
… those of you who've been transformed, go into all the world and preach the gospel. Make disciples, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. And I will be with you always until the end of the day. go into all the world. And I know a lot of church folk that won't cross the street to share the gospel. Go into all the world. Well, no, I'm okay, God, if you save me, but I'm not only not going, but I'm not gonna pray and I'm not gonna give and I'm not gonna help and I'm not gonna serve because I'm happy to receive mercy from God, but I'm gonna reject the mission of God. I told you chapter four is tough. No, no, God, I want my will, but I really don't want your will. If your will involves me sacrificing. I told you chapter four, it ends weird and it's complicated. So let's do this. Let's go back to where we started in week number one. …
… And the commission was, in Mark's Gospel, go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He wasn't saying pass this on to future generations. He said you're to go. That commission has never been revoked. It is still the obligation, the commission, the responsibility of the New Testament church today. It has never been revoked. It will never be revoked because God has chosen to evangelize the world by sending missionaries, sending out believers, whatever you want to call them, so that face to face, heart to heart, voice to voice, people might hear the only message ever spoken that can make a man's eternity different than that which it would have been had he not known Christ as his Savior. That is an obligation. That is a responsibility. And I want us to look at two or three things in these two passages here today. And first of all, that's this, that we have a personal commitment, a personal commitment to fulfill our responsibilities as a church. …
… Nowhere does the Bible say, don't have anything to do with unbelievers. It doesn't say that. How in the world would Jesus say, go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creatures if it didn't mean for us to have relationships with lost people? Because oftentimes it's developing a relationship with the lost person whereby they understand what we believe and who we are and why we act the way we act. That brings them to the point of wanting Christ. So we're not talking about cutting off all relationships. We're not talking about cutting out all contact. Now, what is he saying to us? He's not saying that you and I should not have any relationship with people who are lost. I mean wicked and as vile as the devil. Why? Because listen, you and I may be the only hope that person has for Christ. It is a matter of not being contaminated with them, not having contact. And so that's why we have to work diligently at keeping clean in a dirty world. …
