David Platt, 2026-08-26 · Scripture reading

… but you surpassed them all. Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain. But a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands and let her works praise her in the gates. Now, as soon as I read the end of this chapter, the first thing I need to do is pause and point out something really important. This is a picture of a perfect woman. Like literally. in this proverb we hear nothing about any imperfection in her at all you think about what we just read we read about how godly she is how wise she is what a wonderful wife she is she's a homemaker she's a great cook who makes food for her family she makes clothes for her children with her own bare hands she gets up before everyone else gets up she goes to bed after everyone else goes to bed she actually doesn't sleep her light never goes out she is strong, she's humble, she's confident, she's a servant and a leader, and she's an entrepreneur who's out in the world making good business deals and buying property for the benefit of her family, and on top of all of that, she loves and cares for the poor. I give you a picture of Wonder Woman in the Word of God. And I point this out because I think some, maybe many women, can easily hear this passage, and instead of being encouraged, many, maybe most, are tempted to come away …

… impressed by and Samuel's wowed by all the sons and God's going I hear him winking listen to Proverbs 31 30 charm it's deceitful and beauty is passing but a woman who fears the Lord she shall be praised. What is God saying? He's saying all that glitters isn't gold. All that glitters isn't gold. You can see something sparkly. Oh, it's charming. That's charming. That's beautiful. No, no. He's saying it might glitter, but it's actually not gold. And that's what the scripture tells us, and that's what we see on the scene. David didn't even get invited to the party. His father excluded the only one God actually included to sit on the throne and to rule and to reign. Why didn't Jesse invite him? Is it because he was his illegitimate son, born out of wedlock as presented in the show? Well, I can say this to you. That is not in the Bible clearly stated. Now, there are some things that cause there to be some, hmm, what's going on? …

… her husband also calls her blessed and he praises her verse 29 my daughters have done well but you excel them all charm is deceitful and beauty is passing but a woman who fears the lord she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands and let her own works praise her in the gates. That. Women pursue that and men pursue the loving of our wives. I close with this. our daughters are going to marry men like their fathers. Our sons are going to grow up to be husbands just like you are being. Learned response behavior mixed in with biblical teaching. Sometimes, dad, use some words. Most of the time, if always, your kids are forming their relationship with God based upon how they see you. Even if today, if you flubbed it all up and you're unable now, you can't resend time, you can't bring it back, you can call your children today. Make amends. I'm going to ask only the couples right now to stand up. …

… or character qualities over superficial qualities. Proverbs 31, verse 30, I love this one. Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman that fears the Lord shall be praised. You know what I'm saying is eventually they're not gonna look as good as they do right now. That's how I, Julie's always like, when you're old, you're gonna have wrinkles everywhere. I'm like, what makes you think that? I don't need no Botox. What are you talking about? You know, charm is deceitful and beauty is fading, but somebody that fears the Lord, someone that has godly character, someone that's following Jesus, someone that's trying to do God's will for their life, that is who you can build with. So what is it saying? Someone that fears God is somebody better than has a good personality. Someone that fears God is better than someone that's good looking. I have seen people be physically drawn to somebody that look beautiful on the outside but nasty on the inside. And that physical attraction, that's going to fade. …

… Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favor is deceitful and beauty is vain. But a woman who feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her the fruit of her hands and let her own works praise her in the gates. Now what he's talking about here is her glowing witness, her witness to her children. Her children rise up and call her blessed. And I don't think there could be any greater reward. The Apostle John said, I have no greater joy than to know that my children walk in the truth. Her children rise up and call her blessed. Kate Wiggins said this, Most of the good and beautiful things in life come by twos and by threes and by dozens and hundreds. There are plenty of roses, stars, sunsets, rainbows, brothers and sisters, aunts and cousins. But there's only one mother in the whole world. Nobody can take your place. Oh, her witness to her children. And then there's the witness to her husband. …
