Sermons on Proverbs 5:21

For a man’s ways are before the eyes of the LORD, and the LORD examines all his paths. For the ways of man are before Yahweh’s eyes. He examines all his paths. For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, and he pondereth all his goings. For the ways of man are before the eyes of Jehovah; And he maketh level all his paths.

Job 34-37

Elihu is a little too simplistic when it comes to good and evil in the world and good and evil people doing good and evil things and that, well, they're getting what they deserve, but the evil people are getting what they deserve. Not always immediately, but always ultimately. That's the part he's leaving out, the ultimate part. He's still looking at good and evil and rewards and punishment, like the others, a little too simplistic. For he hears the cry of the afflicted when he gives quietness, who then can make trouble? When he hides his face, who then can see him? whether it is against a nation or a man alone, that the hypocrite should not reign, lest the people be ensnared. For has anyone said to God, I have borne chastening, I will offend no more? Teach me what I do not see. If I have done iniquity, I will do no more. Should he repay it according to your terms, just because you disavow it? you must choose not I therefore speak what you know now remember Job has been complaining and saying if God would just show me what I've done wrong then I would repent of it I could stop but I haven't done anything wrong so if God would bring this to the courtroom and and accuse me and let me know what I have done, then I'll stop it. …

… in our life that we all desire Solomon gave us the prescription for that kind of fulfillment in Proverbs 5 verses 18 to 21 instead of looking outside of marriage for that fulfillment look for it within the marriage relationship that God has created. Solomon said it this way in Proverbs 5 verse 18. Let your fountain be blessed and rejoice in the wife of your youth. As a loving hind and a graceful doe, let her breast satisfy you at all times. Be exhilarated always with her love. For why should you, my son, be exhilarated with an adulteress and embrace the bosom of a foreigner. For the ways of a man are before the eyes of the Lord, and he watches over all of his paths. Perhaps that last sentence is the strongest argument for abstaining from sexual immorality. for some of you right now, some of you watching, listening to this message, you're engaged in sexual immorality. You think nobody knows what you're up to. That may or may not be the truth. I think of a church leader I know who had been carrying on an affair for a year. He thought nobody knew. What he didn't know was the elders of his church had hired a private investigator. They were following him. They were camped outside of the home of the woman he was carrying on with. And on a day that began like any other day in his work career, he was called in and summarily dismissed from his position. …

… But God knows, God's watching, and God will judge. And I close with Proverbs 5.21, for the ways of a man are before the eyes of the Lord, and he watches over all of his paths. We finished the conference, and Amy and I were walking down to the ice cream stand where people would gather after the evening conference, and Amy always gives me good feedback on my messages, and she said, now Robert, wasn't that a little over the top? A little melodramatic. I mean, how do you know somebody in that conference was engaged in an extramarital affair? 30 minutes later, we're standing there eating our ice cream and socializing with the conference people. The conference director comes up to me and he says, how did you know? how did you know I said how did I know what said how did you know that this week one of the conference participants has been engaged in an open affair with somebody else's wife well the fact is I didn't know but I knew in a crowd that size I know in a crowd this size that there are some of you who are engaged in sexual sin right now I've seen it for 30 years in ministry over and over again. A father locked in a bitter custody battle for his children because his wife has left him for another man or even another woman. Or a wife who feels belittled and betrayed because of her husband's addiction to pornography. Or a Christian leader who has to give up his …

The Final Judgment
Jonathan Edwards

Let such consider, that there is a God in heaven, who beholds them, and sees how they conduct themselves in their daily traffic with one another; and that he will try their works another day. Justice shall assuredly take place at last. The righteous Governor of the world will not suffer injustice without control; he will control and rectify it, by returning the injury upon the head of the injurer: Matt. vii. 2. “With what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.” 3. To those who plead for the lawfulness of practices generally condemned by God’s people. You who do this, consider that your practices must be tried at the day of judgment. Consider, whether or no they are likely to be approved by the most holy Judge at that day: Prov. v. 21. “The ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord; and he pondereth all his goings.” However, by your carnal reasonings, you may deceive your own hearts, yet you will not be able to deceive the judge, he will not hearken to your excuses, but will try your ways by the rule; he will know whether they be straight or crooked. …
