Sermons on Romans 8:11

And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you.But if the Spirit of him who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwelleth in you, he that raised up Christ Jesus from the dead shall give life also to your mortal bodies through his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

Tremble at God's Word
David Platt, 2026-09-30

… the spirit of Christ. He doesn't belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, and your spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, then he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his spirit. Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation, but it is not to the sinful nature to live according to it. For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. Because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. You did not receive a Spirit that makes you a slave again to fear. You received the Spirit of sonship. And by Him we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. And if we're children, we are heirs. …

… happened. Sanctification is different. I play a part in sanctification. This is where I am seeking to live a holy life. You see? And I read over in Romans chapter 8 verse 11, the Spirit of God who raised Christ from the dead lives in you. And just as He raised Jesus from the dead, He'll give life to your mortal body by the same Spirit living in you. So dear Christian friends, you have no obligation whatsoever to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. Get it? Some people say, have tried to live the Christian life. It's so hard. I disagree. It's not hard to be a Christian. It's impossible. No, seriously, it's impossible. How can I love my enemies? How can I turn the other cheek? How can I go the extra mile? I can't do that in my own effort. So it's impossible for me to live the Christian life in my strength, in my ability. But the Bible says I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. So you need the help and work of the Holy Spirit to live the Christian life. And listen to this. There is no vice. There is no addiction. There is no sin that has to control your life anymore. Because God has given you everything you need to live free in Christ. So you might say, well, I have a problem with gambling, or I have an addiction to porn, or I can't stop drinking, or I can't get away from these drugs. Yes, you can. And yes, …

… the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit, Holy Spirit, of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his spirit who lives in you. Now, Paul's thinking more long-term here. He's thinking the long game here. He's thinking the same way the spirit caused Jesus to come to life again. That same spirit is going to cause you to come to life again in the last day. But he's saying in a bigger picture, in other places, he emphasizes that the same spirit who raised Christ from the dead is living in us if we're in Christ. So my daily expectation has got to elevate. It's got to go above and beyond the normal, I can't, it won't, he won't, I'm sure it won't, I know it won't, I won't, we won't, I can't, we can't. we have the same spirit. We're learning right here that the agent of the Trinity that raised Jesus out of the grave was the Holy Spirit. …

Spirit, Not Self - Louie Giglio
Louie Giglio, 2026-07-13

… with a grave, but your spirit is on a collision course with the righteousness of God and with God himself. And if the spirit of him, wow, you might just want to put a little star in your text by this if it's not already there, a little check mark or two in the margin and maybe get your highlighter out if you haven't already. And if the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he, Holy Spirit, who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his spirit who lives in you. Now, we don't want to break this all up too neatly here. This is God Almighty raising Jesus from the dead, but raising Jesus from the dead connected to the power of the Holy Spirit. And what God is saying today, can we please just take a moment and breathe this in? He's saying the same power that raised Christ lives in you. in other words we didn't use a thousand percent tnt for the explosion it brought christ to life but we're only passing out firecrackers to everybody else he's saying no the same power the same dynamo that raised jesus lives in you that's why jesus is so excited to say i'm going away but the advocate's coming and when he comes you're going to get dynamite power inside of you. Same power, exact power that raised Christ from the dead lives in you and will give life to your mortal bodies because of his spirit who lives …

… says in Romans 8, if the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies that through his spirit who dwells in you. Elsewhere the promise tells us that he will transform our lowly bodies to be like his body. So just stop and put that there's a rear view mirror but put that in the front. Just look at that view. The glorious resurrection that awaits us all as believers. The catechism tells us Christ's resurrection is a sure pledge of our glorious resurrection. and so take this brothers and sisters into your Monday morning number one Christ has overcome death Christ has raised you to new life and three he's given you a sure pledge and great promise of what is to come so you put all of those three things together and you carry that with you into your week and and and if you put them all together what do you get what does it amount to what is the benefit and it comes back to comfort to comfort Comfort amidst all the challenges and trials of a Monday morning and an upcoming week. …

… But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is life because of righteousness. and if the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you. He who raised Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his spirit who dwells in you. Paul doesn't want us to miss the point in that paragraph. The spirit dwells in you. You have him. Isn't that amazing? That he would say, you have him. God gives us his spirit dwelling in us. And it is his spirit who gives wisdom, not mere age. this is the word of righteous Elihu in Job chapter 32 verses 8 and 9 he says it is the spirit in man the breath of the almighty who makes him understand it is not the old who are wise nor the aged who understand what is right. So, young brothers in the room, beware of youthful resignation regarding wisdom. And older brothers in the room, beware of elderly presumption related to wisdom. …

… Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus, our Lord. There is comfort for body, for if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Jesus Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies. and comfort for our souls. For it is God who justifies who is to condemn. Christ Jesus is the one who died. More than that, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who is interceding for us. Friends, this is why the disciples were so eager when they found Jesus the Christ. We're so eager to run and tell someone else, we have found the Messiah, we have found Jesus of Nazareth, because they understood what it meant to find him. I love the song we sang earlier. I hope it's one of the songs I'm singing when I die. How sweet the name of Jesus sounds in a believer's ear. It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds, and drives away his fear. …

LIVE THE LIFE YOU WERE DESIGNED FOR
Dave Clark, 2025-10-26

That's freeing, isn't it? I can't do it on my own. That's right. The Spirit who lives in us gives us life. That's the power. Look at verse 11. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his spirit who lives in you. That's a power-packed verse. That's crazy. You need to let that sink in. So the same spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives inside of you, if you've surrendered your life to Christ and you're living for him, you have resurrection power available to you every day. Do I wake up that way? That's convicting for me. Do I live my life every day that way? See, it's for victory over sin and strength for obedience. You're not obligated to the flesh. You don't owe your sinful nature anything. Resurrection power. You say, Dave, I can't break this sinful habit. No, you can't, but he can. See, the Holy Spirit's power working in you. You can't overcome sin through self-effort. It's not going to happen, but by the Spirit, through his power, you can put it to death. That's what Paul is telling us here. …

… but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead, shall also quicken or make alive your mortal body. You don't have to worry about it. You don't have to try to do it. You don't have to try to get up. The Spirit is going to quicken your mortal body. By his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Oh my God, isn't that something? You don't have to put on at all. It is there for you. Keep going. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors not to the flesh to live after the flesh. I don't owe the flesh nothing. I'm not saying I always do right, but when I do wrong, it's not because I owe a bill. I don't owe the flesh nothing. I'm not in debt to sin. I'm not in debt to Satan. He can't have me because I don't owe him nothing. I don't owe him anything. …
