Well, there is a word. We'll be coming from Romans 8, verse 14 through 18. And I really encourage you in your free time to definitely study the chapter in its whole, for we will be feeding from it in its entirety. And I ask if you're able to stand as we honor God's reading or the reading of God's holy word. Romans 8 beginning at verse 14. For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons and daughters of God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading you to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also. Heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ. If indeed we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed in us. …
… then you can say with the Apostle Paul these words. I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing to the glory that will be revealed to us. Amen. our mobile app and more go to LutheranHour.org ¶¶ Sing with all the saints in glory, sing the resurrection song. Death and sorrow are such glory to the former days before. For all our long clouds are breaking, so the storms of time shall cease. In God's likeness we awaken, knowing ever the same peace. Life eternal, and with voices, Jesus, they do not sustain. Shout with joy, the endless voices, sound of the light of God's name. Like eternal, all what wonders, crown of great, what joy adore. Red of mirrors, closing thunder, saints shall send ye from the throne. To Thee, O Lord, Who I lifted my soul, To thee, O Lord, who I lift up my soul. My God, I trust in Thee. I trust in thee. I trust you, my God. I trust in thee. …
… ask, why me? You ask, what now? What now, God? What do I do with this situation? Paul says in Romans chapter 8, verse 18, our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. That's not minimizing your pain. That's maximizing your perspective. It's helping you understand that in the light of God's glory, what we're going through, what we're dealing with now pales in comparison to what God has for us. Think about that old hymn, turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace. what an amazing song and reminder that what we're going through, what we're dealing with here on earth is just temporary. You're filtering your life through that heavenly lens. When heaven becomes your focus, people become your priority. You see people differently. I love what Pastor Ed says. You've never locked eyes with someone that doesn't matter to God. …
… He said when I got through adding it all up I reckon That the sufferings Of this present world Take me back to my scripture I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared. Now, this is reminiscent of Paul's day. They weighed everything by scales to determine worth. The heavier the scales went down, the more weight it was. So if you put certain things on it and it went up, it didn't have much weight. So he said, when I put the suffering on the scale, it went up. when I put the glory on the scale, it fell down. So when I stand back and look at it, the greater weight is on the glory than it is on the suffering. So he said, I reckon that the sufferings of this present world, this present time, this present, oh my God, oh my God, somebody holler this present time. He said, what I'm going through right now, What I'm going through right now is not worthy to be compared to the glory which shall be revealed in a... …
Yeah, Romans chapter 8, verse 18 through 28. When you have it, say amen. Paul says, for I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to even be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. I could stay there all day. I could just put up a tent and camp out in my backyard and stay on that text all day. I reckon that the sufferings of this present time, anybody got some sufferings? The suffering of your present time is not worthy to even be compared. Don't even put it in the same sentence. It's not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. The whole earth is waiting for the manifestation of the sons of God, for you to peel back your flesh and show who you really are. Come on, talk to me, somebody. For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly. …
… One more verse from Romans 8, 18, King James Version, please on the screen. For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For I reckon, I thought about it a little while. I did the math on it. I added and subtracted and multiplied and divided. I sat down with my situation and I reckon that the sufferings of this present time, what I'm going through right now on the outside. I reckon that that is not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in me. Now let me give you my title. Turn to your neighbor and say, I know it's crazy, but keep it in context. Keep it in context. Keep it in context. Father, I pray that you would illuminate what you're doing in our situation. Thank you that you already were speaking while your word was being read. Now make it so personal that people squirm. Like, has he been following me around this week? …
… but it will put into perspective any pain you do face in the present. For Paul said in Romans 8.18, for I consider that the sufferings of this present time not even worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed in us. How could I complain about the aches and pains and the sufferings that I deal with that relatively compared to future glory are just a trifle? Now, you have to be realistic. He's not belittling your suffering. He's acknowledging there's hard things we face, but when you compare it to forever in God's presence, how can it possibly even be compared? And that's really just the idea. We will see him, right? We will see him. You'll notice he doesn't go, the streets of gold, there's eagles everywhere, you know, right? He says, we'll see him. We will see him. Psalm 17, 15, as for me, I will see your face in righteousness, and I will be satisfied when I awaken your likeness. We're going to see him. …
… you out and he won't take you out because he knows the storm has purpose if you don't believe me ask paul paul said for i reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared to the glory which shall be revealed god said i'll put you in a storm because i know at the end of it there's glory waiting on you lord who am i preaching to in here tonight are you sitting next to your intercessor just nudge on them a little bit and say neighbor don't be worried about the storm you're going through because the storm has a purpose to put you closer to where God has ordained you Hallelujah! And here Jonah is in the storm. And my brothers and sisters, amen, it is a perfect storm. Storms, amen, teach you that you cannot run from the wrath and purpose of God on your life. And this storm was so perfect that it pushed Jonah to pray. the storm pushed Jonah to do something Jonah hadn't done the whole time oh I thank him I'm sorry my shout kind of tried to get me right there I felt am I all right I thought the shout kind of tickled my feet hallelujah to God this storm made Jonah do something that Jonah should have been doing the whole time. …
… Be still and know that I am God For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time Are not worthy to be compared to the glory that shall be revealed Many of the afflicted many afflictions of the righteous but the Lord shall deliver you out of them all weeping may endure for a night but joy When peace like a river attendeth my way When sorrows like sea billows roll Can I tell you what comfort feels like? Whatever my lot thou hast Yes me to say what is it? What is it? It is it, it with what? Do you know the story behind that song? A man by the name of Horatio Spafford was at home minding his business and his daughters, three or four of them and his wife got into a boating accident and the boat sank, all of his children died his wife survived I believe and she sent a telegram to him wherever he was and said all of our daughters have perished in a boating accident well he had to travel a few days later on the same water where they lost their lives he got over near the spot where the boat went down and the and the captain of the ship said this is the spot where we lost the voyage this is around the spot where your daughters perished and he picked up a pen on that boat and wrote that song. …
… That's Romans chapter 8. I am persuaded that the suffering of the present age is not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. That's Romans chapter 8. We don't know how to pray as we should, but the Holy Spirit makes intercessions for us with groanings and utterings. That's Romans chapter 8. What can separate us from the love of God? That's Romans chapter 8. For I am persuaded that neither life nor death nor angels nor principalities nor things present nor things to come nor height nor depth nor any other created thing shall be able to separate us from the love of God. That's Romans chapter 8. if God be for us, who can be against us? That's Romans chapter 8. And I am persuaded that in all these things, we are more than conquerors through Christ who loved us. You know where that is? That's Romans chapter 8. As a matter of fact, that's a good title for this series, more than conquerors. …
… He says, I consider that the suffering of this present time is not worthy to be compared with the glory that will be revealed in us. Glory revealed in us? Yeah. Here's an acorn. Imagine. How does that compare to the redwood tree from which it comes? You're like, that was all in there? But it was. And it was all in there. Incredible potential in that acorn. Giant redwood. How much different is the giant redwood from the acorn? Okay, now look around you. Well, it's New York, so don't look. No eye contact. Think around you. You know what you've got? Go out in the street and look around you. You know what you've got? spiritual acorns as far as the eye can see what this means is any human being that gets planted see that's what that's what makes the difference that's what makes an acorn erupt anything that's planted any human being that's planted in the love and power of God in them there is such beauty there is such potential there is such power such stuff in there that is so beyond what they are right now in power and beauty and degree that it makes the difference between an acorn and a redwood look like nothing. …
… to reckon. Paul uses this word at a place in 2 Corinthians where he says, I reckon, I think out that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed. Now, what's he doing? He says, if I just react to my suffering, I will be overthrown. But if I reason, if I think out, I reckon, I say, just like St. Teresa, He says, I'm thinking out. And what is an immature person? A person that reacts instead of thinks. A Christian is somebody who takes what you already know, the gospel, and you reason it out. Somebody comes and criticizes you. What do you say? You can just react. Or what you can do is you can say, the gospel tells me I'm a sinner. Therefore, I shouldn't be proud. The gospel also tells me that I am utterly loved through Jesus. And therefore, I've got nothing to prove. Now, what are you doing when you do that? You're thinking it out. Children just react. They really don't reason well. They do not elogizdami very well at all. Paul says, I put away the old way. …
… How do you deal with your troubles? I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed to us That's how you deal with your troubles If you don't know whether there's a God If you have no idea whether you're going to be with him when you're done Then you are trapped here on earth for 70 or 80 or 90 years And all of your wealth and all of your joy and all of the melody you'll ever hear is here So if your hearing goes, that's the end. All of the wealth you'll ever have is here, and so if you lose your money, it's the end. All of your joy, you have to find it here, and if it goes, you're destroyed. But not if you know you've got an inheritance coming. You don't have to take pictures, you don't have to be afraid of anything, and you'll enjoy splendor in the ordinary. New green after the winter, a lady birthing her baby, Hmm? …
… see, now Paul says, we talked about this this morning. Paul says, in that context, in this passage, talking about this glorious liberty, he says, in this hope we are saved. For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed in us. What does he mean when he says, in this hope we are saved? Listen, this is the most practical thing you can possibly understand right now. We hope for our sonship. We hope for the glory. We think about the inheritance. We think about the glory that's going to come down, and it's going to be so incredible that when it hits us, when the glory hits ground zero, it's going to transform all of creation into perfection. So there's no more decay anymore. We're going to have a new heavens and new earth, and we're going to be in charge. Where every blade of grass is so beautiful and so clear, it's beauty that'll break your heart, that it'll lead you to kneel down and worship at the glory of the one who created it. That's all going to come to us. And Paul says, my hope for that saves me. Now, it doesn't save me in the sense that it forgives my sins, but he's saying it purifies me. …
… the ocean and the trees, Romans 8.18 says, are standing on tiptoe in anticipation for our revelation as the glorious sons and daughters of the King. I don't know what that means either, but it's tremendous. I can't imagine all of what it means, but it's the sort of thing we're supposed to live off of. Now, just before we go to the table, I'd like to just to tease you with what it actually means to live as sons and daughters of the King. In Galatians chapter 4 and in Romans chapter 8 it says, the Spirit has not given us a spirit of fear, God has not given us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of sonship whereby we cry to the Father, Abba, Father. And when the Bible says in Galatians 4 and in Romans 8 that the Spirit's job is to show us that we're his children and to get rid of our fear, I think we have got a key to the Christian life right there. If you have any fears, if you have any anxieties, it's because you're not listening to the Spirit who tells you you're his children. …
