… Call on him. Cast your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Kay, in the same vein, asked this question. And she said, is it a sin to have mental health struggles and take medication for your struggles? Someone from Life Church in Albany, New York asked this. If I take anxiety medication, does it mean I don't trust God? The answer is, of course not. If you break a leg and you're a Christian, you're probably going to pray and go to the doctor, right? If you have the flu, you're probably going to pray and take your medication or your essential oils. if you're one of those people. And if you think I'm making fun of those people, I am. Because I'm married to one of them. One time I had a headache and I couldn't get any real medicine. So Amy brought me essential oils. She said, this will help your headache. She put this oil right here and the fumes were so strong, they got in my eyes. …
… casting all your anxieties on him because he cares for you. Be sober-minded, here's our word, be watchful. That means, like if you served in the military, first and foremost, thank you, thank you, thank you. But when you were on watch, you know that you were on that wall to defend. The apostle Paul says, be sober-minded, be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world and after you have suffered a little while. The God of all grace who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. What I wanna take a look at, this is not an exhaustive list, but the way I see this text is Peter is showing us at least five ways that men are typically taken off of that wall by the schemes of the enemy. …

In this pulpit stood a wonderful saint of God, Dr. Guy Duffield. He's a long time now been in heaven. Remarkable family, a revolutionary war family. Duffield. His great-great-grandfather was a minister during the Revolutionary period. And he said that he learned, because he was prone to worry, he would take whatever was concerning him. Now, he didn't use a bottle. He used a pillow. And he wrote on the pillow, mortgage for cancer or whatever. Watch this. And he said he would take it. And he said that from this pulpit. And he said he would take that pillow and he said, Lord, you told me to cast all my care upon you because you care for me. And so, Lord, catch. He said, it's yours now. And he said he would have to sometimes 5, 10, 20 times a day pick up that pillow and throw it. …

Amen. I see here Peter laying out some of the schemes of the enemy that he has historically taken men out. Here's what's so wonderful about God's word. This is not an old book. This is a timeless book. This thing is living and active. It doesn't just tell you what happened, it tells you what always happens. And so Peter is warning men about some ways that the enemy historically has taken men out. I'm gonna give you five of them. …
… When you draw near to him, he draws near to you. You cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. And we're really good on the breakthrough. God can do all things through Christ who gives you strength. You're an overcomer by the blood of the lamb and by the words of your testimony. You're blessed coming in. No weapon formed against you will prosper. In a moment, God can heal you. We're good at speaking to the difficult times. It's a longer walk than I realized. And we're good at celebrating the breakthrough times. But what about when you're not falling apart and you're not fully restored either? Where is God when you're stuck in the middle? If you've been there, or maybe you're there right now, not horrible, not great, I wanna tell you that you are not alone, that God is with you. And I wanna promise you, our good God is still at work, even when you feel stuck in the middle. So today, would you pray with me? …
… In 1 Peter 5, 7, it uses similar language. It says, cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Scripture tells us to cast, not to hold, not to manage, not to carry it as long as you possibly can. It says to release it, to let it go. It's a picture of a fisherman. who casts the line. He doesn't just cast the line anywhere. He casts it where the fish are. He casts it where the life is. And that's what we are to do spiritually. Not to just look anywhere for whatever help we can get, but instead to start with, God, what do you want to do? How can I trust you with this? We've gotta be willing to surrender our situation. If we go on in verse two, the story continues. Elisha replied to her, How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house? Your servant has nothing there at all, she said, except a small jar of olive oil. …

He stayed. when you sinned against a holy God. And when you were ashamed of your own sin, he stayed and continued to love you. In the moment, maybe you didn't understand. You're like, God, why didn't you? And I believe that you could. And God, I don't know why this is going on. And maybe you were even mad at God. In that moment, he is the everlasting father who stays. in a world where people will turn on you in a heartbeat, cancel you at the moment of a mistake. We serve an everlasting father who is not like conditional people. His love is constant for you and never changes. He will never leave you. He will never forsake you. He is the everlasting father who stays. The second quality we learn from God's word is this, that God is the father who forgives. …

By Silvanus, a faithful brother, as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God. stand firm in it.
