… a relationship in an incredible way. You ask for forgiveness, but then you also offer forgiveness. Colossians 3.13 says this, Be gentle and ready to forgive. Never hold grudges. Remember, the Lord forgave you, and so you must forgive others. Your marriage will not make it without forgiveness on a daily basis. Shondell and I just this last week celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary. Yeah. Yeah. And we got away for a week after our anniversary. We had the most wonderful time together. As close as we are, we've never felt closer. When we got back, we were talking yesterday, we noticed as soon as we got back, as wonderful as our time away was, we began to disagree about things. See, while we were gone, the biggest decision of the day was what's for lunch. It's hard not to disagree about some of those things. But when we got back, all of a sudden you're in real life. And in real life, you have real issues. You have real problems. …
… We've all blown it. And so marriages need massive, massive doses of forgiveness. And the Bible says in Colossians 3.13, you must make allowances for each other's faults and forgive the person who offends you. Remember the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Forgiveness is one of the primary building blocks of marriage. And it's a way of showing consideration. Now the Bible tells us in James 3 that being considerate is a mark of wisdom, which means when I'm inconsiderate, I'm a fool. I'm stupid. I'm dumb. I'm foolish. Anytime I'm inconsiderate, not just to my wife, but to anybody, to clerks or anybody else, I am being unwise. Wisdom is shown by being considerate of the needs of other people, including offering forgiveness. Now, I want you to evaluate yourself on this one. I want you to put an NW next to it, means needs work, or put an okay if you're in denial and a liar. Oh, let me introduce CJ and Linda, would you give them a warm welcome? …
… you may say, how do I go about forgiving? Here's what scripture says, Colossians 3.13. We're told to bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Now, how do you forgive? How do you forgive? Scripture says this, forgive as the Lord forgave you. That's how you forgive. How do we forgive? We forgive others as the Lord has forgiven us. If you've been around the church for very long, you'll see a lot of people are talking about church hurt. And church hurt is very, very real. I'll tell you, as a pastor, we get it too. Like if Jesus is the good shepherd and we're the under shepherd and you're the sheep. I just wanna remind you, sheep bite. I've been hurt, you may have been hurt, and church hurt is real, and so is forgiveness. In fact, church hurt is one of the greatest opportunities to learn to forgive as we've been forgiven. as followers of Jesus, that's what we're called to do. …
… That's not what forgive means. But scripture tells us this in Colossians 3.13, bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. How in the world do you do that when you've been hurt so deeply? Scripture goes on to say, forgive as the Lord forgave you. Like, how do I forgive something that's so unforgivable? You forgive as the Lord forgave you. You don't forgive because they deserve it. You forgive because you were forgiven when you didn't deserve it. And again, I just wanna be really clear, forgiveness is not saying what they did is okay. And forgiveness is not waiting until you feel like forgiving. Forgiveness is actually a decision long before it's an emotion. It's a decision. As I've been forgiven, I choose, even if I don't feel it, even if I don't want to, I choose to forgive. It is choosing to forgive and release the debt even when you have every right to hold onto it. …
… I'm going to keep it 100 every time colossians chapter 3 verse 12 and 13 says therefore god's chosen ones holy and loved put on heartfelt compassion kindness humility gentleness and patience accepting one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a complaint against another just as the lord has forgiven you so you must also forgive that's colossians chapter 3 verse 12 through 13 so what i want you to do right now is lift your hand to the lord lift your hand to the lord lift your hand to the lord right there where you are watching it unless you're driving lift your hand to the lord and repeat after me lord forgive me for the times i didn't forgive others forgive me lord for the times I held bitterness in my heart unforgiveness in my heart but thank you come on say it out loud thank you for forgiving me now give me the maturity to forgive others Lord make me a peacemaker come on come on Lord make me a bridge builder God make me a unifier so that our church can be one of the strongest churches in this world. …
… because I just didn't give the office the proper notice, is let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts. It comes at the very end of all this sweeping chapter on how to change, on a changed heart. And there's a parallel to it in Philippians 4. And in Philippians 4, Paul says, the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. For I have learned the secret of being content, whatever the circumstances, whether well-fed or hungry, whether in plenty or in want. Now, what's the principle here? Let me use one more illustration from Pride and Prejudice. My illustrations tend to come in clusters, if you notice. And there's a place near the end of the book where the central character, Lizzie Bennett, one of her sisters is engaged to be married. I wish you could find a man and be as happy as me. Well, now, Lizzie's response is interesting because on the one hand, it's not the traditional response. …
