It's in verse 23. Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which is translated God with us. My third point that's non-negotiable is the person of Jesus. his nature let me give you another word the personality of Jesus did y'all notice I had all peas in my all my points started with a P go ahead and say preach pastor go ahead preach pastor the person of Jesus what is the person the person is this he is God with us everybody don't believe that jehovah's witnesses don't believe that jesus is god the mormons don't believe jesus is god the the Muslims don't believe jesus is god I'm going down the list of people but we believe that when jesus came it was god coming to dwell among us john 1 14 says and the word became flesh and dwelled among us I don't know where y'all are but I'm glad about the fact that God left his seed in glory and came down through 42 generations, was born of a virgin, wrapped in swaddling clothes, and hung out with us. That's what's so special about Christmas is when God came and hung out with us. That's great news. And guess what? He didn't stop hanging out with us when he was born in a manger. He hangs out with us when he came into your heart and life. When you called out on him, he came and took residency in you. …
… He says, All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken through Isaiah the prophet, that a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, they shall name him Emmanuel, which means God is with us. And I think that's incredible. But let's put a context around this. The context is what? Isaiah said these words. Again, Matthew's quoting these words over 600 years after Isaiah wrote those words. And he says, all this took place to fulfill what had been spoken to Isaiah the prophet. Almost 700 years before this, Isaiah had spoken these words. God had spoken these words. God had made this promise. Now think about if you were living in the time of Isaiah, here's a promise. you never got to see the promise fulfilled. The generation after Isaiah, you lived in the promise, you never got to see the promise fulfilled. Next generation, next generation. In fact, the letter to the Hebrews talks about, Hebrews chapter 11, where the author of Hebrews is going through all of these people who were promised God's blessings, promised a certain thing. …
… him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet. Look, the virgin shall become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means God with us. When Joseph awoke from his sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him. He took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had given birth to a son, and he named him Jesus. This is the word of God for you, the people of God. Thanks be to God. April's uncle David likes to send me religious memes that often make me giggle, most I can never ever share from the pulpit. But one he sent me made me laugh. It was an image of Joseph with baby Jesus, and Joseph is wearing a t-shirt that says, I'm not the stepdad, I'm the dad that stepped up. And when I look at this passage we see Joseph stepping up in so many big ways. But what do we know about St. Joseph? From the scriptures we actually don't know much. …
… It's interesting. You go back to the very beginning of Matthew, chapter 1, verse 23, and you see Jesus introduced his birth. The angel says that you will give birth to a child, and you will call his name Emmanuel, which means what? God with us. That is how Jesus is introduced in chapter 1, verse 23. You get to chapter 28, verse 20, and you've got the same exact picture. God with you. Jesus with you. Now, you can imagine. Put yourselves in the disciples' shoes at this point. you went from the most extreme low to the extreme high Jesus died on the cross, he was gone, what in the world are we going to do now? three days later, did you hear Jesus is alive? well now we're really talking, we're in business, we've got all kinds of things we can do now and then for a few days he's there and then he checks out what's he thinking? he's thinking that when he ascends into heaven His presence is no longer confined to one body on the face of this earth. …
The virgin birth shows us that God is God. As Jesus comes into the world, Matthew 1, verses 18 through 25, can we have class before I preach? Matthew 1, verses 18 through 25, it says that Mary conceives before her and Joseph shake hands. Which means Jesus is conceived unlike anybody else. Before Joseph and Mary hook up, Mary's already pregnant. Now we're trying to duplicate that and replicate that in our culture now in a human way. I think we call it in vitro fertilization. And we're trying to figure out with humanity how to plant seeds. But before scientists could get together and try to figure it out, the God who made science. Brought Jesus in the world in verse number 18 of Matthew 1 says the Holy Spirit planted the seed in Mary. and she became impregnated. It is the virgin birth that causes Jesus to stand alone unlike any other. He is born unlike any other, conceived unlike any other, which qualifies him to be unlike any other and to be the savior for the entire world. …
… And my question this Sunday afternoon is how do we proceed when there is tension between what we've learned and what we live? I think that brother Joseph is faced with a similar question when we revisit the story here in Matthew chapter one, verse 18 through 25. Not much is known or said about Joseph in scripture. In fact, there are no distinguishable scenes with this brother after we see him and Mary searching for Jesus in the temple when Jesus is 12 years old. But these verses give us at least three distinguishing traits about Joseph. Verse 20 tells us, family, about his lineage. Let the church say lineage. That he is a descendant of the line of King David. but not only do we know about his lineage we also know something about his love life verse 18 tells us that he is pledged to be married to this sweet sister by the name of Mary but finally the text reveals something to us about his relationship with the Lord because verse 19 describes him as a man who is faithful to the law now family though Mary and Joseph are intertwined in a Hellenistic culture that is ruled by an insecure irresponsible inhumane and impeachable emperor by the name of Caesar I don't know who you thought I was talking about the implication of this text it's not that brother Joseph is allegiant to the law of Rome but it's faithful to the law of God that the text is the text suggests it doesn't give us details but if I …
