… of authority no matter how big or small. In fact, Jesus said this, Matthew chapter 10, verses 29 through 31. He said, are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin and not one of them falls to the ground apart from your father's will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore. See the sovereignty and providence of God causes the believer to have no fear. You are more value than many sparrows. I'm here to tell you tonight that there is no such thing as fate as the world thinks of it. There's no luck. There's no chance. Nothing happens haphazardly or random. God is the one according to his scriptures that governs over times and seasons and events. I'm so thankful that my dad taught me growing up never to say good luck to someone. He said there's no such thing. And he was very sarcastic and tongue in cheek with us. And he would say, I don't believe in luck. …

06/21/26 The Moment of Moments
Mike Schmitz, 2026-06-20 · Scripture reading

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. May you have a seat. So I was thinking about fear recently. I think fear is funny. Fear isn't funny. I think what we are afraid of is sometimes funny. Because if you ask someone, like, okay, what are some of your fears? The list is quite diverse. The list goes from like spiders to dying alone. And that sense of being able to say like, the list can be something like answering the phone when I don't know the number or making a call to running into combat or going into battle. like putting your life on the line, the span of things that we can be afraid of, things like abandonment or rejection or famine, snakes, like just like the vast amount of things that we can be afraid of are remarkable. In fact, there was, they did a study and then someone, Jerry Seinfeld made a joke about it that he said that they came out with this survey and they said that the top two fears people have are public speaking, number one, and dying number two. …

… dead because of old age. God decides when every one of them falls to the ground. That's meticulous providence. It's what Matthew 10 29 says. The king's heart is a a stream in the hand of the Lord. He turns it wherever he will. Trump, you think you're in charge? You're not in charge. Putin, you're not in charge. Mamdani, you're not in charge. God's in charge. Job 42 to no purpose of yours can be thwarted. None. So the first thing I want you to see is that the providence of God in the Bible is meticulous and all-embracing. If the Lord wills, we will do this or that. Number two, because of this all-embracing providence, there is an all-satisfying gospel. there would be no gospel, no salvation, no everlasting joy, no missions, no Christianity, no cross-conference without such meticulous providence. Before we look at the most important verse that I'll show you tonight, here's the question you should be asking, and some of you are. Is it possible for God to will that sin happen without sinning? …

… fully, but you can see with the eyes of faith. You remember what Jesus says in Matthew 10? Are not two sparrows sold for a penny, and yet not one of them falls to the ground apart from the will of your Father who is in heaven? You think about that at first, it sounds a little cruel, almost sadistic, as if Jesus is saying, hey, look, God strikes all the sparrows dead. But we know that's not the point because over and over in that paragraph, Jesus says, fear not. Do not be afraid. Fear the one who can throw the body and soul into hell, but not your heavenly Father. That's the point. Don't be afraid. He might say to us, Jesus, don't you go and buy a cup of worms for fishing at the gas station for two bucks near the lake? Nothing happens to those worms that God doesn't superintend. And aren't you much more valuable than a cup of worms? That's what Jesus is saying with the sparrows. …

God’s Plan (Part 3)
Tim Keller, 1992-08-16

… Whenever evil befalls a city has not the Lord caused it. Then Matthew 29. Now people love to quote this verse as if it's a sweet kind of comforting verse. It's not at all. Matthew 10 29 says, yet not even a sparrow falls to the ground except by the Father's will. You know the song, His Eye is on the Sparrow? That's a wonderful sentiment. And the song is all about how God, His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He cares for me. The verse is not saying anything like that. It says that the sparrow, the little sparrow, falls out of the nest and plunks down right on his head. It was part of God's plan. How comforting. Why are we singing about this? It doesn't say his eyes on the sparrow. It says not a sparrow falls to the ground except by the Father's will. It says in Isaiah 45, it says, I am the Lord and there is no other. I bring prosperity and I create disaster. …

… Hey, if you could fast forward in the gospel of Matthew, you'd come to Matthew chapter 10 and verses 29 through 31. Our Lord again is on this same subject. He says, are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall to the ground without your father. He doesn't say that a sparrow won't fall. He doesn't say you're not going to have trouble. But he says God is right there. He attends the funeral of every sparrow. And then he says, but the very hairs of your head are numbered. Friend, he knows things about you that you don't know about you. You think he doesn't understand. You don't understand how much he does understand. Not a person here knows how many hairs you have on your head EXCEPT A FEW GUYS THAT I'M LOOKING AT, RIGHT? HA, HA, HA. THE VERY HAIRS OF YOUR HEAD ARE NUMBERED. AND THEN OUR LORD SAYS, FEAR NOT, THEREFORE ARE YE NOT WORTH MORE? ARE YE NOT OF MORE VALUE THAN MANY SPARRERS? …
