And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is My disciple, truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward.”Whoever gives one of these little ones just a cup of cold water to drink in the name of a disciple, most certainly I tell you, he will in no way lose his reward.”And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward. And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only, in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you he shall in no wise lose his reward.

… We need to decide who we're living for. So he says, if you love father or mother more than me, son or daughter more than me, basically even your life more than me, you have to forsake all others. And we might look at Jesus and say, that's crazy. But think about this. Every person that gets married, that's what they do. Every person who gets married says, okay, I'm forsaking all, that's one of the lines that you use sometimes in weddings. Forsaking all others, we cling to each other. That every religious sister who consecrates herself to the Lord, to this community, she's forsaking all others. Every priest who makes vows to be able to be a priest, he's forsaking all others. Every one of us knows this, that in every area of life where we want to grow in freedom, where we want to grow in love, where we want to have a full life, It always involves restriction so that one can be first. And if we don't do that, if we don't take that risk of intentionally limiting ourself, then we'll never become who we're supposed to be. …
… And when we scripted the series and we're coming up with what the weeks were that we were going to focus on, we included Matthew chapter 10, verse 42. And here's what Jesus says, telling us what life in his kingdom is like, what lights his heart up, what pleases God. And he says that whoever gives one of these little ones a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward. And Scott, I texted you immediately when we kind of planned the series up because I was like, I don't know anybody on earth who has given their life over to this verse than you. I mean, you have literally spent your life bringing cups of cold water to people around the world. I love the specificity of the temperature. Yeah, that he said cold, that he said it needs to be cold. And how audacious when there wasn't even ice cubes then, you know? …
Men do not account that lost, that is let out to use: but what is bestowed in charity is lent to the Lord, and he repays with great increase. Isa. xxxii. 8. “The liberal deviseth liberal things, and by liberal things shall he stand.” Here I would particularly observe, 1. That if you give with a spirit of true charity, you shall be rewarded in what is infinitely more valuable than what you give; even eternal riches in heaven. Matt. x. 42. “Whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones, a cup of cold water only, in the name of a disciple; verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.” Giving to our needy brethren, is in Scripture called laying up treasure in heaven, in bags that wax not old; Luke xii. 33. “Sell what ye have and give alms, provide for yourselves bags that wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, nor moth corrupteth. Men, when they have laid up their money in their chests, do not suppose that they have thrown it away; but, on the contrary, that it is laid up safe. Much less is treasure thrown away, when it is laid up in heaven. What is laid up there is much safer than what is laid up in chests or cabinets. …
