… Jesus is the Sabbath. And this is why he can stand in Matthew 11, verse 28 and say, come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Jesus is the Sabbath. and we rest in him by joining him and resting in the finished work of God on our behalf. Thank you, Jesus, for the Sabbath. So the question is, what does it mean for us to participate in the Sabbath today? And there's all kinds of different views on this. I like the way that Hebrews 4 says it. For we who have believed, present tense, we enter that rest. So he equates, listen, he equates Sabbath rest with believing in Jesus. Why does he do that? He explains it in verse 10, verse nine. Therefore, a Sabbath rest remains for God's people for the person who has entered his rest has rested from his own works, just as God did from his. Let us then make every effort to enter that rest. …
… Matthew 11, Jesus says, come to me all who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. God's people missed it in Isaiah 30. They believed that their deliverance was gonna be found in activity or power. Their activity wasn't found, or their deliverance wasn't found in power. Their deliverance wasn't found in Egypt. Their deliverance wasn't found in a chariot or a horse or a scheme or a strategy. Where is your deliverance found? In quietness and trust. Rest. Your deliverance is not going to be found in having everything that you need. Your deliverance is not going to be found in knowing the right people. Your deliverance is not going to be found in controlling every situation and every person so it can be exactly how you want it. Your deliverance is not going to be found in showing up to church every week and checking a box and being here so that God, your deliverance is going to be found in quietness and in trust. …
… You say to many right now through me, come unto me, all you who labor and are heavy laden. and I will give you rest. Let many find the rest right now in this moment at this altar, at the feet of your word. I pray in Jesus' name, in Jesus' name. As our worship teams come, you come. … Glory to the Lord. Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart, and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. I'd like you to have a seat. so when I was in seminary there I had a buddy there who uh when he was in high school he had been a foreign exchange student uh somewhere in Europe and I remember him telling the story very uh it was it was very impactful on him and it made an impact on me he said when he arrived in whatever European country that he was uh gonna be studying in uh his his host father picked him up and at the airport and his host father didn't say a word he said you're the guy yep I'm the guy got in the car and he just drove in silence and he was so uncomfortable he's a high school student he's in europe for the first time he's far away from home all these things and the man doesn't say a word he's like i'm going to live with this man the entire time in his family the entire time i'm here in in europe and at one point they pull up to the house and the first thing essentially that this man says to my buddy from seminary is he says you see this house …
… and this language of refreshment is significant when one of the only places this language is used is in Matthew 11 28 famous passage if you know Matthew 11 28 where Jesus says come to me all who are burdened all who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest same word refreshment come to me Jesus says I will give you refreshment. And what I take this to mean is that one of the ways in which Jesus gives the rest, that Jesus gives the refreshment to our souls, one of those key ways is through other people. This can be surprising. Sometimes we take other Christians so for granted. Or we focus just on the hard parts of it. the quirks the idiosyncrasies the challenges of church life because we can be really different in the church we just got this thing in common Jesus it's such a good thing when really different people who wouldn't get together may not get along otherwise get together because of Jesus Jesus looks really good when that happens But we're different. …
… Let go of what went wrong. Let go, because if you let go, Jesus says, come unto me. All ye that labor and are heavy laden, I'll give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me. Learn when to let go. discard but after you discard you got to decide discard what ain't helpful so you can grab on to what's helpful but then after you discard it you got to make a decision he said oh I got to read this to you because it is so fire it's right there I think in verse 15 or maybe it's verse 14 but but it's real good. It says, here it is, and don't shout yet, but here it is. It says, verse 14, therefore, Right. Right. Right. Right. All right. All right. The way y'all sing, y'all should be shout ready, okay? So here it is. Therefore is a conjunction. I didn't always know what a conjunction was. But one day back in the day, I'm watching cartoons. …
… talent and skill to pull it off. That is an exhausting way to live. Jesus has a better way. Matthew 11, 28, come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I'm gentle and lowly in heart. You will find rest for your souls, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light. It's still a burden and it's still something we have to trust. In the first century, rabbis would refer to their teaching as a yoke. And if you were a Jew choosing a rabbi and then the rabbi, you were good enough that the rabbi chose you back. All right. That's the beauty of Jesus is he's whosoever King James version. Okay. Any King James people in the house tonight? Raise your hand. Let me see you. Yes. Okay. Everyone gets down on it, but whosoever is in there. All right. And so that's good translation. Whosoever by the time of Christ, what would happen is a rabbi would choose the best of the best students. It'd be like getting into an Ivy League PhD school, okay? …
… surrounding what Jesus is saying right here. And I want you to watch for the action. So we'll start back at Matthew 11, verse 28. It says, come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. At that time, Jesus went through the grain fields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, look, your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath. He answered, haven't you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He entered the house of God and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread, which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. Or haven't you read the law that the priests on the Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath yet are innocent? I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. If you had known what these words meant, I desire mercy, not sacrifice. You would not have condemned the innocent for the son of man is Lord of the Sabbath. …
… God is speaking today. And the Bible says this, today if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts. Do not harden your hearts. What is God saying today? He's still saying, come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. He's still saying, drink of this water of the world. You'll thirst again. But whoever drinks of the water that I give will never thirst. He's saying that. And he is saying to us, it is finished. Paid in full. transaction is complete it's finished the question is are you finished yet running from him are you done yet doing your own thing trying to come up with your own plans and not letting God rule your life are you finished with that and will you turn to him he died for you and he conquered death proving that we can have a living hope which is what i'm going to be talking about on easter living hope can be yours tonight good friday this good friday can be your great friday If you receive the greatest gift ever given to us. …
… you'll find what Jesus said to be true in Matthew 11. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart. And you will find rest for your souls, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light. That is the simple joy of following Jesus. That is what an unbelieving world longs for. That is what people are searching for when it says that people are interested and curious in the spiritual. Do you know what they're looking for? It's like that USA Today article says they've come to an end of their emotional resources. They are burdened. They are weary. They are longing for something more. They're longing for a joy and a peace that doesn't come from a new sexual relationship or a new conquest or the last party that we're at the week before or some new chemical addiction. They're looking for something different, something that lasts, something that satisfies. …
… Matthew chapter 11, Jesus says this. He says, come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. And so, Lord Jesus, I pray that we would all come to you, that we would find rest in you, that you would give us the discipline, that you would give us the wisdom to do what we know we need to, even when we don't feel like it, so we could experience you in a new way, that you could shape us into new people, so that this upcoming year would be better than the year that came before. We pray all of this in your name. Amen and amen. Thank you.
… in all those who place their faith in him. That's good news. He has authority over sin. Fourth, he has authority over suffering. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you what? rest when the world has piled things on you you're confused anxious don't know what's going on to know that there is a Savior who has authority over any suffering this life might bring and that his satisfaction over suffering of this world is eternal to those who were hungry from the things of this world not filling them he said I'm the bread of life and if you eat from this bread. You will never be hungry again. Drink from this water. You'll never be thirsty again. He has authority over suffering. Next, he has authority over nature. Jesus is on the boat with his disciples. There's a big storm that comes up. They're all panicked. He wipes the sleep from his eyes. He yawns and he raises his hand and speaks a word and all of a sudden the storm stops. …
… in order to get to God. And Jesus says, come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, learn from me for I am gentle and lowly in heart and you will find rest for your souls. Don't miss what the whole Bible is teaching here. The reason Jesus came is to bring rest to our weary souls. Don't miss what all the scripture is telling us today, right now that Jesus came to do what no day off, no vacation, no getaway, no unplug and watch whatever streaming service or social media scrolling or no sabbatical, what no one, no thing, nothing in this world can do. Jesus came to bring rest for your soul in relationship with God himself. He came to bring the perpetual rest that your creator designed for you from the beginning of creation with him. This is the gospel. It's the greatest news in all the world. We are wired to work in order to achieve, to get this or that. And the religions of this world are built on this principle. Follow this eightfold path in Buddhism. Pay homage to any of these hundreds of millions of gods in Hinduism. Keep these five pillars in Islam. Work, work, work to get to God. And Jesus comes on the scene and says, no, I do the work. I have come to live with no sin and I have come to die for your sin, to make the way for your soul to be restored to God. I do the work. Think about the …
… or the dark parts of your life. He's not afraid of it. He actually welcomes it. He says, no, Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. He's not afraid of it. The God who created you with his hands and who scooped up dust and created Adam is not afraid to wrestle in your dirt and in your dark times and in the things that are shameful, in the sinful things. He's not afraid to get into those details with you. Because why? Because he's trying to wrestle that out of you so that you can walk in the calling that he has for you and so that you can walk and become more and more like Jesus. He's not afraid. He created you out of the dust. And good news, he's not afraid to get into the dust. Amen? I brought this Bible here today. This Bible is my grandfather's and you can kind of see it. it's kind of frayed. …
… and he nailed it to the cross. How dare you take it back off? But that's what we do. What is wrong with you? What is wrong with me? Jesus says, come to me all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Do you have rest? Then you haven't come to Jesus. you're beating the daylights out of yourself and you cannot rejoice you don't even like the gospel of grace why? because you're terrified of the gospel of grace oh no no no because people will take that for granted and then they will live any way they want to live no if I am in Christ that cannot be turn with me again to Romans Thank you. and look at the next chapter, right after chapter 5. He anticipates that. You get a hold of the covenant of grace, and this is what people say. You preach that stuff, and all of a sudden, you know, people just live in lawlessness. chapter 6 of Romans what shall we say then are we to continue in sin that grace may abound God loves forgiving I love sinning match made in heaven you know is that what we do? …

… I'll have already gained the world that's the reason why jesus comes to us and he says come to me all you who are weary and burdened and i will give you rest take my yoke upon you and learn of me for i am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls for my yoke of grace is easy and my burden my burden is light let's pray our father give us this new way with a self from which real love can grow. Oh, Lord, without this change of heart, we're capable of loving deeds. We're capable of loving feelings, but nothing like this. Give us this new way with the self that comes from accepting your bleeding charity, the bleeding charity of your son. Help us to humble ourselves into boldness and freedom by accepting your grace and becoming lovers indeed. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
