… At once Jesus spoke to them, Take courage, it is I. Do not be afraid. Peter said to him in reply, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. He said, Come. Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me. Immediately, Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter and said to him, O you of little faith, why did you doubt? After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, Truly, you are the Son of God. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Thank you for having a seat. So Joshua Slocum was 51 years old when he left Boston Harbor in 1895. At 51 years old, he got on a 27, 37 foot oyster boat. And he began to sail around the world completely by himself. …
… walking on the sea, they supposed it was a ghost and cried out for they all saw him and were troubled. But immediately he talked with them and said to them, be of good cheer. It is I do not be afraid. Then he went up into the boat to them and the wind ceased and they were greatly amazed in themselves beyond measure and marveled. And I'm going to, I'm going to preach this morning from this text about the storms of life. Specifically, why do they come? Why does God allow storms to come? Because all of us go through storms. Everybody goes through storms. Sometimes it's a storm that hits your family. Sometimes it's a storm that hits your marriage. Sometimes it's a storm that hits you financially, hits your business. It's a storm that hits you with one of your children or some special, and you know, when you get in the storm, you feel like what in the world is going on and God, how much more can I take? And everything is against me. …
… and what i loved about this illustration i thought god how how do you illustrate john 16 33 he said you illustrate it with matthew 14 27 and when i went and lifted up this story again and looked at verse 27, I saw it in this particular passage. The translation comes out, take courage. But in your translation, it may come out in verse 27 and say, take heart. Why? Because the very same word that he spoke, take heart, take courage. And John is the very same word he spoke when he said to the disciples in the storm, take heart, take courage. This is the very same Greek word. And so he's speaking to you from the upper room discourse, but he's also speaking to you in the middle of the storm, the very same word. Be of good courage. Be confident. Take heart. So I dug under that as well. I'll save you a lot of the digging around. But at the end of take heart, be courageous was literally to radiate warm confidence. …
… Once you found him, won't you say, I got it. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. It's a ghost, they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them, take carriage, it is I. Don't be afraid. Lord if it's you Peter replied tell me to come to you on the water you may be seated When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. Peter, of all the disciples, was the only one who asked, if it's you, let me come to where you are. I want to preach for a little while today using as a subject, if you don't believe me, just watch. If you elbow your neighbor, tell them if you don't believe me, just watch. Look at the person behind you. Look at the person behind you. Tell them if you don't believe me, just watch. Writer C.S. Lewis once said, without risk, faith is an impossibility. Somebody needs to write that down. …
… So I'm excited about Jesus. I want to preach about Jesus today from Matthew chapter 14, verses 22 through 35. First Bible story that I ever preached for our last sermon in the series, That's What I Thought. Tell your neighbor, that's what I thought. I say this is the last one. I think it's the last one. If the Lord wants me to keep going, I will. but my plan is today to take some of the things we've been preaching about and minister them to your heart. Welcome to all of our locations. Put it in the comment on YouTube. That's what I thought. This is our final installment. Yeah, this is the first Bible story I ever preached, so I always try to preach it at least once a year just to check in and see how dumb I was the last time I preached it or what new thing God will show me. Glad you're here today. Welcome. Welcome to the presence of God. Welcome to a new beginning. Welcome to a space where grace reigns supreme and where Jesus is Lord and King. Welcome to a place where you can hear his word. …
… I'm sorry. I'm not sorry, but it is a stretch. I'm confessing. All right. But immediately he talked with them and said, be of good cheer. It is I do not be afraid. That's interesting, isn't it? He didn't just say, don't be afraid. He said, be of good cheer. In other words, get happy. Then he went up into the boat to them. The wind ceased. They greatly amazed in themselves beyond measure and marveled. Here's our key verse. Verse 52, for they had not understood about the loaves because the heart was still hard. Here's the point. They had a loaves and fishes experience in which God revealed the nature of his kingdom to them, and they didn't get it. Because they didn't get it, they couldn't draw from this renewed mind understanding of the kingdom to deal with the storm that they were facing on the boat. they didn't get it what did they miss what did they miss they're they're they're they're they've got a multitude before them jesus says you feed them they didn't get the fact that the food didn't multiply at jesus's hands it multiplied at theirs jesus didn't take the boy's lunch throw it in the air and go shazam and create a big pile of food that's not a smart thing to do with a hungry crowd instead he divided it into 12 they handed it out it multiplied as they handed it out so what did they miss they missed the fact that when jesus said you feed them he never changed …
… Look, if you will, in verse 20. And he saith unto them, it is I, be not afraid. And in Matthew, he tells them to be of good cheer. Matthew 14, verse 27. And straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, be of good cheer. It is I, be not afraid. I can see these disciples as their perspiration is on their brow and their face. is a network of fear. Clammy hands hold to those oars and their backs are aching and they're pulling. Peter says, pull harder. We're going to sink. No doubting Thomas says, I don't believe we're going to make it. We're going down. And then they see Jesus. Question, why didn't he come sooner? Why did he wait? You know, he had been there for a long time. If you read the story, you're going to find out that they had been out there on the sea for six agonizing hours. They're out there pulling. And now it's the darkest hour of the night. Mark tells us that Jesus came the fourth watch of the night. …

You know, he'd been there for a long time. If you read the story, you're going to find out that they had been out there on the sea for six, agonizing hours. They're out there pulling. And now it's the darkest hour of the night. Mark tells us that Jesus came the fourth watch of the night. That's between 3 and 6 a.m., the darkest hour. For six long agonizing hours, they're out there, and it seems that He has forgotten them. It wasn't Jesus who had forgotten. Really, it was the disciples that had forgotten. You know, Jesus had just done a miracle. If you read this story in the sixth chapter of John, you'll find out that Jesus had fed 5,000. Notice if you will, in verse 12. …
