A massive crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.A very great multitude spread their clothes on the road. Others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way.And the most part of the multitude spread their garments in the way; and others cut branches from the trees, and spread them in the way.

… Jerusalem we heard from Anthony and we heard from Ella reading Matthew chapter 21 and Matthew chapter 21 just part of it from first a since a very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road while others cut branches from trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of them and those that followed shouted, Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. You know, Palm Sunday is a moment of celebration. Picture it. The streets are full in Jerusalem. The atmosphere is charged. The crowd is there with expectation and anticipation of a king to come. And Jesus enters Jerusalem. And the people respond with a cry that captures the longing of a human heart. They shout, Hosanna. Which means, save us. Save us now. And they're not wrong for praising. They're not wrong for asking for saving. They're not wrong for asking Jesus to save them. But there is a tension in the moment. …
… and others were cutting branches from trees and spreading them on the road. Then the crowds went ahead of him and those who followed all shouted, Hosanna to the son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest heaven. And I just wanna take a moment, church. Can we just celebrate the triumphal entry of our savior, of our king? Can we just shout, Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna, to come this way, Lord Jesus. Find in me a heart that celebrates your victory, Jesus. That's what we're here to do on Palm Sunday. Or you can grab a seat. Hopefully you're sitting next to somebody that you like. If you don't like them, it's too late now. You're locked in. As a church, we've been in a season in a series called Killing You Softly. And if you've been here, you know we've been walking through the seven deadly sins. And it has been a ride. It's been a ride. I don't know about you, but each week I have left church realizing I am more jacked up than I realized. It's like, man, I'm a pastor and I'm a sinner at the same time. What is happening here? …
They brought the donkey and the colt and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, Hosanna to the son of David. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest heaven. When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, who is this? The crowds were saying, this is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee. This is the word of God for you, the people of God. Thanks be to God. Palm Sunday is part spontaneous parade, part protest march. When Jesus rides into Jerusalem beside a donkey, residents of the city begin to whisper. They elbow each other. They point. They quote scripture. Remember that passage from Zechariah? the one that says your liberating king will show up riding a donkey. The warrior who will chase away your oppressors will enter town on the most humble of steeds. The crowd squints. …
And I say this just for authenticity's sake. Matthew chapter 21, verses 1 to 17. Matthew covers this from his eyes, Matthew. And then Mark's gospel, Mark 11, verses 1 through 11. Mark sees it and records it through his eyes. And then Dr. Luke, medical doctor, the gospel of Luke. Luke from chapter 19, verses 29 onward, he records it. And that's the chapter or the book I've selected for today. And then, of course, John chapter 12, verses 12 to 19. John records it from his eyes. Why is this important? I don't want to get too much into this, except that the Bible says that before two or three witnesses, the truth shall be established. Which, by the way, if you're an attorney, or maybe you're a judge, or maybe you're involved in law, did you know that our jurisprudence of the United States of America is founded upon the biblical requirement of you not being able to be convicted without multiple witnesses? Did you know our founding fathers got that from the scriptures? …

… We've been to the 800s BC and the 520s BC. So then what happens next? Matthew 21, 8. Others cut palm branches off the trees and spread them on the road. What was that about? Now I'm going to take you to 175 BC. Hang with me. So 175 BC, there was a king, his name was Antiochus Epiphanes. He was a Syrian Greek king, and with his armies, he invaded the Holy Land and he conquered the Jewish people. And then he said, I don't want you to be Jews anymore. I want you to be Greeks. He wanted to spread the Greek culture throughout his empire, his little tiny empire. And so he took their Torah scrolls and burned them. And he set up an altar in the temple to God, to Zeus. And he slaughtered pigs in sacrifice to Zeus in the altar of God. And he did this, you know, this kind of stuff went on for years. And finally, there was a family called the Maccabees. …
They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them and set him on them. And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road. Others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out saying, Hosanna to the son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. And when he had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved saying, who is this? So the multitude said, this is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee. Y'all see that? I want to talk about the destiny of a donkey. The destiny of a donkey. I started to call it the destiny of a jackass but I thought that might not be a good way to put it some of y'all might not get past that so it's the destiny of a donkey it is it is historically as I grew up in church it is the Sunday that we used to do this many years ago we stopped we used to pass out these palms and we stopped passing out palms for two reasons first of all we stopped passing out the palms because we had to clean up half of them out in the parking lot so we stopped buying them just to have to pick them up and put them in the trash. But secondly, in this story here, the people who laid the palms down …
