In the resurrection, people will neither marry nor be given in marriage. Instead, they will be like the angels in heaven. For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like God’s angels in heaven. For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven. For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as angels in heaven.

Singleness and The Next Generation
David Platt, 2026-06-24

… Let me show you one more. Matthew 22, verse 30. This is where I just want to remind you that Jesus teaches that physical marriage in this life is a temporary institution. Marriage here is temporary. Verse 30 of Matthew chapter 22. In the resurrection, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven who are not married. And the picture is, we have this, we get to the picture in heaven, Revelation 19. marriage here is a shadow, a temporary shadow of an eternal reality to come. Marriage here is intended, we talked about this a couple of weeks ago, we'll mention it in a second, is intended to point to an eternal marriage to Christ. But marriage here is temporary for all of us. Temporary. Even 60 years of marriage. Temporary. A mist. Eternal marriage is to Christ. and so you put all this together this progression in scripture into the new covenant and now with Paul talking about singleness I wish you could all remain single as I am you put it together and here's what you see both singleness and marriage are clearly good biblically marriage is expected now what I mean by that I mean it's not the New Testament says marriage is abnormal now you've still got a normal picture of marriage And even Paul, you get over to 1 Timothy 5, verse 14. …

… And then he says, at the resurrection, people will neither marry nor be given in marriage. They will be like the angels in heaven. What exactly does this mean? I do not know exactly. But when I think about this, I think, first of all, we encounter this question when anybody loses their spouse and then they remarry, right? And then now you have a second mate. and maybe never as much love as you had with the first mate, maybe more love with the second mate, who knows. But when you get to heaven, how's that gonna work out? And what Jesus is saying is, you don't really understand in heaven, it's not like here on earth. And then we gotta stretch our brains to try to understand. And I'm not sure I fully understand, but here's what I think he's saying when he says, we'll be like the angels in heaven. He's saying, we're gonna have a different kind of body. We are not gonna reproduce. We're not gonna have children in heaven. …

… What a thing to say to the Sadducees. You don't understand the scriptures. And then he says, at the resurrection, people will neither marry nor be given in marriage. … as great as they are, are temporary, including marriage. Jesus makes this clear. When he's asked about marriage in heaven, Matthew 22, verse 30, he says, in the resurrection, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. In other words, marriage is an institution for this world that will not be in the next world. So married people are only married in this life. then for billions and trillions of years we're all going to be single marriage is temporary but relationship to Jesus and his church is timeless and singleness uniquely portrays that reality, eternal identification with the body of Christ, which then leads to truth number three God designed singleness to depend on his grace and this is where I want to pull in Paul's warnings from 1 Corinthians regarding singleness, 1 Corinthians 7, in two ways in particular. One, we need God's grace to guard against unholy sexual desires. Now, this is obviously true for all of us, whether we're single or married. But 1 Corinthians 7 emphasizes this specifically for singles. So watch this. In 1 Corinthians chapter 6, or right before 1 Corinthians seven, the Bible says to all people flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body. The sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy spirit within you, whom you have from God. You are not your own. You were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. Now that was totally …
