… and your students are misbehaving, you should start with whoa to you students. It's kind of like a Gandalf thing anyway. So whoa to you teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You clean the outside of the cup and dish. And now he's related to talking about something we can all relate to. You got your coffee mug. You know, you walk over to the sink. You don't clean the outside. You clean the inside. Yeah, not a trick question. You clean the outside of the cup and dish. In other words, he says, you look good on the outside. You hypocrites because, but on the inside, you are full of greed and self-indulgence. What's going on on the inside, he's saying to them, does not match what we see on the outside. What's on the inside doesn't match your performance. And this is Jesus' way of saying, gentlemen, I see right through you. And then he commands, this was so offensive to them. He gives the purveyors of the commandments a command. I mean, these were the people who taught the commandments and Jesus gives them a command. He looks at them and he says, clean the inside of the cup and dish and then the outside will also be clean. In other words, you're going about it all wrong. You look good on the outside, but on the inside, you are not clean. You need to focus on what's going on on the inside because you've got things out of order. …
… catharoi. And Jesus used it again, Matthew 23, a few chapters later. He says, Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee. First, clean the inside of the cup and the plate that the outside also may be clean. You purify the outside of the cup, but inside you're full of sin. You're full of iniquity. You're blind. You're lying to yourselves and to others. First, purify the inside of the cup, and then you'll be the right kind of pure on the outside. Outside purity without inside purity is no purity at all. outside purity, what other people can see, without inside purity, with Jesus, is no purity at all. So what does it mean to be pure in heart? It obviously means more than a clean browser history. No, this is talking about something much deeper and wider and more beautiful. I think Psalm 24, 3 through 6, gives us a fuller picture of this kind of purity. It It says, Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord and who shall stand in his holy place? …
… Anytime you see a very rare word, pay attention to it. The other place that it's used is in Matthew chapter 23, verse 25 to 26. Can I just teach a little bit today? You know, let me teach. Matthew 23 and 25, it says, Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! He says, For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish that the outside of them may be clean also. Now, what's interesting is he uses the word inside two times in that passage, but only one of those times is he using the one that is the same Greek word for within you. That's important. So there are two Greek words that are used. The first Greek word, when it says, when he talks about how they were clean on the outside, but on the inside they were full of a bunch of junk, that word is not the word in Luke 17. …
… Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites. For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate. but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisees, first clean the inside of the cup and the plate that the outside may also be clean. Jesus didn't say the outside doesn't matter. He said the inside has priority and that if you clean the inside, the outside becomes clean. Can a streetwalker walk into a church looking like a streetwalker? Yes, she can. but if God who dwells in unapproachable light redeems her and transforms her will she still continue to walk into church looking like a street walker? You better believe she won't. She won't because what she will be communicating is a reality that is no longer consistent with that which she communicated before. We see washing connected with our very regeneration. In Titus 3, 4-7, we have the washing of regeneration. We have washing connected with our justification. 1 Corinthians chapter 6, that famous passage, and such were some of you, but you were washed. …
