… And he said to them, This is my blood. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. Truly I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God. So this scene here in Mark, which is repeated in the other synoptic gospels with just some slight variations, gives us, again, the institution of this supper. Jesus has come to Jerusalem with his disciples, knowing that the cross is waiting there for him. It's not waiting for him like it's going to catch him if he just happens to get too close to it. We know that Jesus has been moving purposefully, intentionally, willfully, undistractably towards the cross. His betrayal is already underway. He says, one of you, one of this inner circle will be the one to hand me over. Not long after this moment, he'll be out in the garden of Gethsemane. So troubled and burdened by the events that are to come that Luke tells us in his account that as he poured out his prayers to the Father, his sweat became like great drops of blood falling to the ground. …
… chapter 26, he comes to a final Passover meal with his followers. And at this Passover meal, he takes wine and he says, this is the blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many, for the forgiveness of sins. And then you turn the pages and you get further into the New Testament. Paul says in Romans 5, 9, we have now been justified by his blood. You get to Ephesians 1, 7, it says, in him we have redemption through his blood. In Hebrews 10, 19, it says, we have boldness to enter the sanctuary through the blood of Jesus. In the end, Jesus is called the one who loves us and set us free from our sins by his blood. Then you get to this final song, sung in Revelation chapter five by people who are dressed in white, made white by the blood of the lamb. And they're holding palm branches, welcoming the savior. And the song that they're singing is you are worthy to take the scroll and open its seals because you were slaughtered and you purchased people for God by your blood from every tribe and language and people and nation. …
… innocent and perfect and the blood that would be shed was pure and spotless. Not just on the outside like the lamb in Egypt, but on the inside, he was pure and spotless. My blood, which is poured out for you. Matthew says of that verse, then he took a cup and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them saying, drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. Now he's going to say it plainly for the forgiveness of sins. How do you get forgiven? By being good? No. By having the blood of the Lamb of God over the doorpost of your life. By putting your faith in the finished work of Jesus and believing that the Passover Lamb has come. This is how your sins are forgiven. It is not by praying a prayer, raising your hand, or attending a church, or trying to do good, or being better than the next person. It's by having the blood of the Lamb of God over the doorpost of your life. He says, I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on. In other words, this is the last Passover, people. That's what he's trying to tell his followers. This is the last time we're doing this. We've done it for centuries, but this is the last sacrifice. I'm not going to drink from the fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom. …
… And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. And he said to them, This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. Truly I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God. Verse 26. And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. The title of our message this morning is Salvation at the Crossroads. Salvation at the Crossroads. There is a crossroads here. And there are at least four meetings that happen here at the crossroads. At the crossroads here in Jerusalem, two meals meet. At the crossroads here in Jerusalem, two lambs meet. At the crossroads here in Jerusalem, two adams meet. And finally, at the crossroads here in Jerusalem, two covenants meet. And we see them all gathered together, juxtaposed here in Mark chapter 14, verses 22 through 26. …
