… down and worship me. And Jesus said to him, Away from me, Satan, for it is written, Worship the Lord your God and serve him only. Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him. The reason I don't have to stay in my wilderness is because Jesus went to his. And what the generation could not do in 40 years, Jesus did in 40 days. With God, what should take years takes days. I need somebody to shout right now. If you are glad, that you have a savior who did not skip the wilderness you have a savior that did not skip the scourging you have a savior that did not skip the mocking and because he did not skip the cross i'm coming out of this i'm coming out i'm coming out of this the last thing i do i'm coming out because he's in me i'm coming out much greater is he that lives in me than he that's in the world. You can skip this. You don't have to live in fear. …
… prostrate yourself and worship me. At this, Jesus said to him, get away, Satan. It is written, the Lord your God shall you worship and him alone shall you serve. Then the devil left him and behold, angels came and ministered to him. The Gospel of the Lord. I invite you to have a seat. So this Lent, this Lent we're going to be talking about stories. Obviously we have the stories of today. We have the story of Genesis. We have the story of Jesus in the wilderness. There's a story that we're going to come back to all throughout the course of Lent. It's maybe a story you know of. It's in Luke chapter 15. It's a story Jesus told, in fact. It's the parable of the prodigal son. So if you know that parable, it's actually in your bulletin. We printed it out. We're going to print it out every single week because this is going to be the story that kind of we follow throughout the whole course of Lent. …
… Your word is truth. You protect yourself from the adversary through the word. And the disciples had seen this modeled. Remember back in Matthew chapter 4, verse 1 through 11? Jesus was tempted three times face to face with the evil one, with the devil. He's tempted three times. Every single time he's tempted, he says the exact same thing in response. What does he say? He says, it is written, And then he quotes from the Old Testament. It is written. He quotes from the Old Testament. Now, here's the question. Think about it with me. Jesus is tempted three times. Each time he says, it is written, quotes from the Old Testament. Do you think that in those circumstances, those temptations, he had to quote Scripture in order to ward off that temptation? Do you think it was necessary for him to quote Scripture? I don't think it was. I think Jesus was the kind of guy who could say anything at that point and it would become scripture he had that kind of power he says anything and we've got red letters written in our Bible just like that, he's that good he could say anything at that point, it would become scripture did he have to quote scripture? no, I think Jesus is setting an example there for us that in order to be pure, in order to show the character of God, in order to do this disciplining thing, the Word must be at the center of your life. …
… Verse 11 says, then the devil left him and behold, angels came and ministered to him. When the devil realized that you're going to keep quoting the word back at him, He's going to leave you alone for a while. Somebody say, let me go ahead and talk back at the devil and tell him it is written. Somebody say, tell the devil it's written. Whatever he's tempting you, tell him it is written. Whatever he's trying to get you to do, tell him it's written. Here's what the Word says. Here's what the Scripture says. Here's what God's Word says to me. I'm a follower. I'm a disciple. I'm a doer of the Word. I ain't listening to you, devil. You can try to tempt me. You can try to persuade me, but I am persuaded that nothing shall separate me from the love of God. Not trials, not persecution, not anything can separate me from the fact that God loves me and has prepared a life for me. …
… and serve him only and then the devil left him and angels came and attended him. is that your first go-to? Is that your second go-to? Is that your third go-to or your fourth go-to? Or is that somewhere fifth, sixth down the line or you need a friend to text you a passage? When you start thinking, you're like, praise God, I'm not taking my mouth off the living scripture because I can breathe in desperately what God has breathed out miraculously. And no matter how far under I go, I can still breathe. So what is the takeaway? Well, the takeaway is lean into this collection. Don't miss one talk in this collection because at the end of it all, by the grace of God, we'll all be deeper in embracing more of the word of God than ever before in our lives. But I would just say for today is that I think it's compelling for me and it's propelling me to change, to change the way I approach the word of God. …
… But let's look at one in Matthew, chapter 4, before we officially begin the sermon. Matthew, chapter 4, verses 8 through 11. This one should be a little bit more familiar to you, both in the Bible and in your own life. Again, the Devil… You know him. God is a character who needs no introduction. Again, the Devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. "'All this I will give you,' he said, if you will bow down and worship me." Jesus said to him, "'Away from me, Satan, for it is written, Worship the Lord your God and serve him only. Verse 8 and 9 is where a lot of us have been living lately, where the Devil has been talking to us and taking us places in our minds. Verse 11 is where we want to get today by the time I'm done preaching. Verse 11 says, "'Then the Devil left him, and angels came and attended him.'" How many want to get to verse 11 by the time I finish today. …
