… There'll be three verses in total, passages in total. Matthew 5, verse 17 and 18. Do not think that I came to, Jesus is speaking. Do not think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I should stop right here. Jesus said this. Do not think I came to destroy the law or the prophets. translation. Jesus said, don't think I've come to contradict or not fulfill the entire Old Testament. Why do I say this? I hope most of you are beautifully ignorant about this, but there might be one person here that is not, where there's a group that call themselves Christians. They will not read the Old Testament because they said it has no bearing. It's worthless. list. You don't need to read it. All you need to do, listen, only read the words of Jesus. You don't even need to read Paul. You don't need to read anybody but the words of Jesus. Really. In fact, they use that, by the way, as Christians to justify particular sins that they practice, and they say Jesus never said anything about it. Now you know who I'm talking about. Jesus said, I didn't come to destroy the prophets or the law. …
… If you could see Moses' message, you'd believe in me. Do not think that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets. I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. Jesus was that message fulfilled. So the statement, he wrote of me, 546, John 5 verse 46, he wrote of me, I take to mean if you rightly understand the message of the Pentateuch as a whole. If you embrace it, believe it as the truth of God, you will recognize Jesus Christ as the embodiment of that truth, that way, that life. Now, of course, the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible are strewn with foreshadowings of the Redeemer. Serpent crushing the seed, offspring of Abraham blessing the nations, Passover and blood sacrifices, manna and the water gushing rock, tabernacle patterned in heaven, high priest and propitiating altar, prophet like Moses, and on and on. But here in John 5, I don't think Jesus is calling attention to one of those. I don't think that's the focus. …
… And next week, we're going to talk about Matthew chapter five, verses 13 through 17. This is where Jesus says, you are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world. I don't want you to miss it. It's gonna be a powerful weekend of worship. And these messages will speak directly to your heart and to your friends' hearts. So I wanna encourage you to do that. I wanna invite you to go to core.org slash next and you can download there the Beatitudes as your wallpaper. So I have it now on my phone. And every day when I pick up my phone, I can say those again. I can pray those. Lord, help me to be poor in spirit. When I'm poor in spirit or mourning, be with me, help me. Help me to be meek and hunger and thirst after righteousness and all the rest. They're right there. They could be on your phone. I'd like to encourage you to do that. You'll also find more information about something I mentioned in the sermon, and that is the chance to sponsor a classroom of children in Honduras, in Malawi, in South Africa, in Uganda. …
a reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Chapter 5, verses 17 through 37. Jesus said to his disciples, Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish, but to fulfill. Amen. I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law until all things have taken place. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven. I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, you shall not kill, and whoever kills will be liable to judgment. But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment. …
… And it's to that that I wish to turn. And in Matthew chapter 5, verse 17, we'll read down to verse 20. And I've titled this Jesus' view of Scripture because it's exactly what it is. He said in verse 17, Do not think that I came to abolish the law or the prophets. I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Profound words. Jesus begins by saying, do not think that I came to abolish the law. …
… NOW CHAPTER FIVE, VERSES 17 AND 18. JESUS CHRIST SAID, THINK NOT THAT I AM COME TO DESTROY THE LAW OR THE PROPHETS. I AM NOT COME TO DESTROY, BUT TO FULFILL. FOR VERILY I SAY UNTO YOU, TILL HEAVEN AND EARTH PASS, ONE JOT OR ONE TITTLE SHALL IN NOWISE PASS FROM THE LAW TILL ALL BE FULFILLED." MY HEART HAS BEEN BLESSED AS I HAVE MEDITATED ON THESE SCRIPTURES. IT SPEAK, IT SPEAK, THEY SPEAK OF THE LORD JESUS, THE GREAT FULFILLER. AND WHOEVER YOU ARE TODAY, IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, YOU ARE BEHIND IN YOUR EDUCATION. NO ONE IS TRULY EDUCATED WHO IS IGNORANT OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. YOU MAY KNOW BIOLOGY AND THE STUDY OF LIFE, BUT HOW SAD, IF YOU DON'T KNOW JESUS, THE GIVER OF LIFE, you may know astronomy and how the heavens go, but how sad if you don't know Jesus and how to go to heaven. You may know botany, the study of flowers, but how sad if you don't know Jesus, who is Sharon's sweetest rose and the lily of the valley. …
