… Are you producing good fruit or toxic fruit? All right, let's talk about Matthew chapter 7, verses 21 through 23. This is now the third of these pericopes, these short statements that Jesus makes. Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. On that day, many will say to me, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, cast out demons in your name, and do many deeds of power in your name. And then I will declare to them, I never knew you. Go away from me, you evildoers. You feel the tragic note in this. The Only Way to Heaven (Matthew 7:13-27)
John MacArthur, 2023-04-30 · Scripture reading

… name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles? And then I will declare to them, I never knew You. Depart from me, You who practice lawlessness. Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house, and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and slammed against that house, and it fell, and great was its fall. You have here a very definitive section of instruction from our Lord. … have we not prophesied in your name, cast out demons in your name, and done many wonders in your name. And then I will declare to them, I never knew you. Depart from me, you who practice lawlessness. I realize that probably much of what I felt in my heart to share tonight has been heard quite a few times over in this group, so I will consider it a privilege to preach to the choir. this verse is used often to somehow to persuade people that miracles are not for today which to me sounds like the most I don't get it should I say what I'm really thinking that's just stupid Jesus didn't warn against prophets. He warned against false prophets. He didn't warn against signs and wonders. He warned against false signs and wonders. The implication, when you warn of something false, the implication is there's something true. Otherwise, you would just make a general blanket statement, And just be careful of anyone pursuing miracles or declaring they've seen them or practiced them or whatever it might be. …

… and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you. Depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Have you ever passed a house or been walking up to a house wanting to knock on the door and you see a sign that says, Beware the dog. HAVE YOU EVER SEEN THAT? WHAT DO YOU DO? WELL, YOU BEWARE THE DOG, DON'T YOU? WHEN THERE'S A SIGN THERE THAT SAYS JUST BEWARE THE DOG, YOU STOP RIGHT AWAY AND YOU LOOK AROUND AND WONDER, SHOULD I GO IN THERE? BUT WHATEVER, IT SENSITIZES YOU. I WANT YOU TO IMAGINE WALKING UP TO A HOUSE AND SEEING A SIGN THAT SAYS, BEWARE THE WOLF. I JUST SUPPOSE RATHER THAN HAVING A, A, A, A DOG IN THE YARD. THERE IS A WOLF IN THE YARD. I THINK YOU WOULD DO A DOUBLE TAKE. THE TITLE OF OUR MESSAGE TODAY, BEWARE THE WOLVES. THAT'S WHAT JESUS IS SAYING. AND THESE WOLVES WHO HAVE DISGUISED THEMSELVES IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING. …
