Take Your Notes On The Boat!
Steven Furtick, 2026-08-03

… You know, it's an amazing thing about Jesus. When he taught, he taught as one who had authority and not as one of their teachers of the law. It was as if his listeners would hear him teach and say, I know that voice. I don't even know much about this Jesus yet, but something inside of me comes alive when he speaks. When he speaks, it doesn't just sound like words. It sounds like life. It sounds like eternity. sounds like truth. I know that voice. When he spoke to his students, they called him teacher, rabbi. So he took them out on the boat, and they thought class was dismissed, and they put their notebooks up. But then God gave them a gift called the wind. The wind is a gift, because the wind that's pushing against you that you think is going to destroy you…that wind is God's whiteboard. That's where he starts teaching you the greatest lessons. That's where he starts to show you what he can really do. See, to apply the word against the wind is how faith is grown. Faith doesn't grow when you take notes. …

WHY DO YOU FEEL EMPTY?
Sam Kelly, 2026-07-19

… and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash. Verse 28, when Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority and not as their teachers of the law. Before we dive too deeply into this text, I want to take a look at verse 28 and 29, and that is the reality. Keep in mind, they're amazed at the whole teaching, the whole Sermon on the Mount from Matthew chapter 5 to Matthew chapter 7. And they're like, whoa, something is different about this guy when he talks. Now you and I are like, yeah, it's because it's Jesus. But keep in mind, this is the crowd pre-death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. So to them at this point, he's just another teacher of the scriptures, but they had heard other teachers of the scriptures talk before. And when they did, they'd say things like the scripture says, the Torah says, AKA they taught off of borrowed authority, but Jesus doesn't need to borrow authority. Jesus is the final authority. His words are the very bedrock to life itself, which begs an important question for us today. …

… Listen as if you've never heard it before. It's recorded in Matthew chapter 7, verses 24 through 29. I'll be reading it from the New Living Translation. Matthew chapter 7, verse 24 begins, Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise. like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won't collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn't obey it is foolish like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash. When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching. For he taught with real authority, quite unlike their teachers of religious law. Few things are more memorable than a good story. It's funny, we can forget the details of information and data that has to do with the abstract, but somehow our minds never fully release a great story. …

The Astonishing Authority of Christ
Skip Heitzig, 2026-04-19

… for he taught, here's the word, He taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes. Now let me paint a picture for you of ancient synagogue worship. First of all, the synagogue itself. The synagogue, if you know your Old Testament, you have noticed that in the entire Old Testament, there's not a single mention of the word synagogue because the institution did not exist in the Old Testament. There was one place of worship that was the tabernacle later on, the temple. But in 586 BC, the Babylonians destroyed that temple and moved the people to Babylon for 70 years. While they were in Babylon, they developed the institution called sunagoge, or the synagogue, the bringing together. That's what the word means. The bringing together of people. because they had no temple. They couldn't offer sacrifice. They had no formal priestly function. So they would get together in smaller groups and discuss the law or hear the law being taught. Well, when they came back 70 years later, back to their homeland, they kept the synagogue as well as the temple. So wherever you went in the Jewish world, there were synagogues. And there is a synagogue at this time in the city of Capernaum. Now in the synagogue, there were different, you might say, staff members. There was number one, the ruler of the synagogue. And the ruler of the synagogue is the guy who made the order of service each week for the synagogue service. …

More Ready Than You Recognize
Steven Furtick, 2026-02-02

… You'll see why I call it a foundational scripture in just a moment. Matthew chapter 7, verses 24 through 29, to be specific. Full disclosure, I was not ready to preach yet. I got a phone call from our chief of staff here at the church who said, if we want to preach, it's going to need to be tomorrow. It might not be safe, or we might not be able to do it after that. and so i told the lord i'm not ready to preach you and i both know that i had set aside the next few days to study and uh lord since you do rule the universe could you move the weather that's going to be bad to the days where we're not gathering in your name like are we not on the same team here of course i understand that there are far more pressing issues to the Lord than when my study day is, but I was praying like that. And he gave me my message title while I was praying about my message. And the title that I want to use for this message, and actually I want you to say it to your neighbor, look at him and say, you are more ready than you recognize. …

… All these things that he's taught. When he was finished, the crowds were amazed at his teaching because he taught as one who had authority and not as their teachers of the law. don't you want to be like that? Don't you want people to say that about you? She talks like she has authority, not like positional authority, not like anybody signed her up for some kind of special access code thing, but she just has it on her life. And that's what he's wanting for you. It says in Ephesians that at his resurrection, he's hoping our eyes will be opened to see this, to know that the power that raised him up or that's in us is the same as the mighty strength that he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead. This is Ephesians 1. And seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms far above all rule and authority, power and dominion in every name that is invoked not only in the present age, but also in the one to come. …
