00 I know, it's kind of a weird feeling to realize I'll never know what it feels like to kiss myself. That was weird. Okay, moving on. All right, the not-so-newlywed game. Question number three. After nearly 23 years of marriage, I'd like to think Chelsea and I know each other pretty darn well. Yes, I agree with that, but the real question is who knows who better? Personally, I think I know you way better than you know me. No way. I know. I know you better and you are about to find out. No, we are definitely going to find out because today we're putting ourselves to the ultimate test. Yeah, we're playing a special game inspired by the classic 1960s game show called, drumroll please, The Newlywed Game. But we are calling it The Not-So-Newlywed Game. We're going to answer questions about our relationship history, our favorite things, and even some of our pet peeves. That one gets me a little nervous.
57 Oh man, you should be. So let the games begin on In Good Faith. Okay, here we are. We have been married for 22 years, almost 23. Coming up on 23. And I know what you're about to say. On the broad James Michael Jordan. I was going to say Michael Jordan here. Yes! I knew you were going to say it because you're so predictable. We've been in our Clyde Drexler year for too long, 22. For too long, really. It's been that bad. We're about to find out how bad it is. Right? In celebration of that, and just to have some fun, because life can seem hard, and sometimes I think we just need to have a little bit of fun. We are going to play a game inspired by the newlywed game.
52 But since we're not newlyweds, we can call it the not-so-newlywed game. Officially, this is called the not-so-newlywed game. And boy, we are not so newlywed. We are about to find out if we actually know each other to the depths we think we do. And so we have a list of questions that Judah and I are going to take turns asking each other. We actually have an official pen, pencil. We do. And paper in front of us. And we're going to attempt to guess what each other's answer is going to be, not what we think the right answer is. And I'd like to give a little outline for our listeners to anticipate. just for a second. We are going to be covering topics such as date and marriage history. Would your spouse rather? That's provocative. One of our categories will be favorite things. And one of the categories is this could get intense. And then we'll end with some more fun kind of laughable things. I love that. Okay. So if you get excited about that stuff, let's be honest. Hopefully you'll get to know us a little bit better if you want to, but I promise you, I can guarantee this is going to get hilarious. Yes. So we'll kick it off and I'm going to ask the first question. What did we do on our first real date? Our first official date?
17 We have to write the answer down. Oh, that's right. That's why I have a pencil in my hand, by the way. Yeah. Okay. Okay. What did you write down? Multnomah Falls. Yes, that's exactly what. You too? Yes. Shout out to Multnomah Falls, which we went to this year. We did. It was so fun. Our first real date was January 1st of 1999. Nine. That's right. Nineties. That feels like, I mean, it really was a millennium ago, but you know. Oh my God, don't say that. And we went to dinner and then we walked up a little bit up to the falls. and there you held my hand for the first time. Yeah, to be exact, I looked at you and said, Pastor Jude said I could hold your hand. And you said, is that a question or a commandment? And that's the way it went because, how should I say, I'm a smooth operator. Yeah, not exactly how I pictured that.
09 I was also like, you know, barely 20, so I didn't know what I was doing. Not exactly how I pictured that moment going like, I don't care what Pastor Jude said. Do you want to hold my hand? He's still my pastor to this day, by the way, just in case anyone's out there wondering. But he did say, you need to hold her hand. On this first date, you need to hold her hand. I was like, okay, okay, okay. And then I just didn't know what to do. Here we are walking and I really want to hold your hand. And it's like, bro, grow up. But anyways, that's how it happened. Our first date was multiple. And it was so memorable that we both got it right. Okay, so we're one for one, by the way. One for one. Yeah, congrats. We'll keep a running tally. Yeah. All right, I got a question for you. Okay. When and where was our first kiss? Variety Okay. What'd you say? Well, the win, I'm a little unsure of. But the Seattle Pier, the Seattle waterfront.
05 Yep. I wrote Seattle dock. Close enough. Probably four months into dating. Three. Why do I think I know the timeline? I never know timelines. But I'm going to go with three. But the point is, we're two for two. Yeah, yeah. We're definitely giving ourselves that. our first kiss. It was a sloppy kiss. I'm not gonna lie. That sounds gross. I know everyone's like, oh, I'm driving to work. Please don't talk about sloppy kisses. But it was. I feel like at least you didn't say Pastor June said I could kiss you. So you know what? There's definitely an improvement. I didn't bring any pastor into that. From our first holding hands. Remember we started kissing that night so much though that like at a stoplight? Yeah. I was hoping for a red light and I would lean over in that old GMC truck and kiss you. Right. I'd never hope for a red light more. Oh, that was so fun. I do love your lips. To this day. To this day, kissing you is one of the best things on the planet.
59 You have wonderful lips too. I am grateful we have soft. We? You. I don't know. You have soft, beautiful, big lips. Oh, thanks, babe. Here is the next question. What was our first fight and what was it about? Oh, man. I know. I don't know. I'm debating between two things because one was kind of a fight between us and the other was just like a problem that we had to solve together. Wait, but I'm guessing your answer. Okay. What are you going to say? Okay. I think I got it.
38 I'm going to get drunk over this one. I mean, I know what it is. Okay. You want to know what I said? Yeah. The townhome my mom helped us get. I said my mom, even though my dad was involved, but really it was my mom. I said parents because for me the bigger issue was because we were so young and you were living at your parents and you were working for your parents, the issue was, are your parents going to control our lives? Because they just put a down payment on a townhome that I ended up being grateful for. I think my response was, is that an option? Because my mom's interested. I'm kidding, mom. I love you. Come on. You went well. I mean, I don't want to brag, but we're three for three. We keep this up. We're going to go to the Baseball Hall of Fame with this baton average. Yeah, right? Congrats to us. Okay, what question do you have for me? Your next question is, what was our worst date? Do we have an outstanding worst date?
34 Is this for our whole 22 years of marriage, or is this when we were dating? Yeah, no, this is dating. Okay, oh yeah. Wait, did I go out of order then? No, no, no, it's perfect. No, I definitely know what our worst date was when we were dating. You do? Oh, yeah. Oh, no. Do I? Sorry, I'm so throwing you under the bus with this answer. Oh, my word. Who says throwing under the bus? Do people even say that anymore? Oh, oh, I know. I know. I got it. But I asked you. So what's your answer? It was on my 21st birthday. Hike. You attempted to take me on a hike. That's what I wrote it down. But we completely got lost. We never even found the trail. No, I don't think we found the trailhead. Because here's the thing. We come into marriage and everybody has their own hobbies. And mine was hiking and yours was golfing, which was great. And so we hadn't been golfing together or hiking together at this point.
28 Still haven't gone golfing together. Yes, we have. So you attempted to take me on a hike, which I appreciated. It was like you were trying to embrace my hobby, although we never found the trailhead. But then for my 21st birthday present. Oh, boy. This is not included in the question. Oh, sorry, but it's just, you know, it needs to be said. No, the question is worst date was for my 21st birthday present. You got me a set of golf clubs, which I didn't ask for, didn't want. Don't think that was a part of the date. That's what's your worst gift, okay? But the date is the hike. We're not getting to the golf clubs, which were, I paid full price at Costco. I don't want to get into it. I don't think I ever used it. And I paid my membership at Costco. I don't think I ever used those darn golf clubs, not once. Those golf clubs probably cost me about 400 bucks. Think of the things you could have got me that I used for $400. No, you should buy me. Hey, by the way, you haven't bought me a birthday present for this year, I might add.
22 I haven't bought you a birthday. That is outrageous. I paid for the entire family to go on a river float that took approximately two and a half hours. Did I not? Is that a present? I thought that was like my birthday party that you paid for. That is one of the great gifts I've ever given you. By the way, so far, we're four for four, which I'm really impressive. I don't want to brag. Okay, what are each other's love languages? Oh my God, this is a... you want me to answer yeah quality time with you quality time quality time that's chelsea's life theme song yes quality time is my love language correct correct you got five for five words words of affirmation yeah that's what it is followed closely by touch yes but mine is touch also. So my second one is touch. Ah, your third or fourth one is touch. Your first one's quality time. Your second one's quality time. Your third one's quality time. And then a little bit of touch when I'm not so hot in bed. But at some point, Chelsea turns into the human heater and then you can no longer touch her, but you are more than willing to share words with her if she's still awake. Thank you for letting everybody know.
36 We absolutely crushed the dating history. Now we get into the would your spouse rather.
01 Okay. I'm going to go first. Do you want me to go first? Yeah, you go first. Okay. would I rather is this you're answering this for me right would I rather have a game night in or go out to a concert okay This is, the pressure has definitely gone up a little bit here. Yeah. Because I feel like we are so, we're batting a thousand folks. If you've just joined us, like, gee, this is not a live podcast. Nobody joins the podcast. People have just changed the channel. Okay, what did you say? I would rather do game night in or go out to a concert. Game night in. Without question. Absolutely. Great. All right, what's your question for me? Oh, this is a good one. Get a huge hug or a pep talk after a long day. Oh man, that's tough.
55 I feel that it kind of depends on if the long day was just like long and tiring, but good. Okay, now I'm, okay. I just need to answer. Oh, but the pressure's on because we're batting a thousand. Okay, this is, I am the least sure about this one. Okay. I said a hug. Yes, that's what I put. Yes. Because a pep talk is like that connection, talking, processing. Yes, but I need the hug too. But like pep talk, I don't know. It's so interesting as our, one of our children is the most like me. I watched him give a pep talk to one of his siblings recently. And it was the worst pep talk I'd ever heard. And I realized, oh, I think that's what my pep talks are like. Because it was much more problem solving. It's just like, here's what you need to do.
49 Oh my gosh, this is what you need to do. So yeah, you understand your pep talks are fixed talks, right? So it's like, here's how I'm going to fix you. And I'm going to talk to you about fixing you. No, it's like, here's the solution. Here's the three things you need to do. So pep talk typically for a lot of other personalities is more like inspirational talks. Pep talks for you is like, hey, guess what? You have a really great house here, but here's a couple things you need to fix. And it's like, oh, that's a pep talk? It's a fixed talk. But I love your fixed talks. Your fixed talks are wonderful. I give more pep talks. Oh, and you've told me that for years. But watching our son attempt it, that was a game changer. It's a nightmare. That was a game changer for me. I'm really going to try to grow in that area. I got a slam dunk one, but I'm going to ask you because it's provocative. Can I ask you? Okay, sure. Spend a week in silence Or spend a week without a second to yourself Hold on, are you asking about me?
42 Yeah Oh gosh It's my turn to ask you, right? Yes Do we even need to write this down? No, we don't, but I did Absolutely spend a week in silence Spend a week in silence She'd take that over $10 million in her bank account, ladies and gentlemen I mean, it's just Chelsea's priority for alone time her deep, deep, profound lack of FOMO. She has never feared missing out on anything. In fact, missing out is one of her other love languages. So you could offer her $10 million or a week of solitude. She's taking a week of solitude every single time. I'd probably take the $10 million, but that was an official question, so that doesn't care. Okay, okay. Okay, this is a tough one, though. It's building. It's a mountain. This one, I don't know. I'm going out on a limb. Would you rather live without movies or live without music? I actually know this.
38 Okay. Deeply. okay i think you said movies i said movies you'd rather live without movies yes oh i got it right you did oh i thought you were like no i i have to have movies are more of a mood thing for me music is all day every day and there's so many different genres and so many different things like it can always just fit where you are movies i i love you know how much i'm a visual person i I love, love, love, love all my friends that are in the movies and love movie makers, all that. But music, I'm sorry. That's like living without flowers. It is such a part of you. Like you will get one line of one song. I know. And sing it over and over and over again. But I actually like it about you. Maybe it's time to let the old ways die. You know what you've been into lately?
30 I did that one for a long time. Yeah, it's Purple Rain. Purple Rain, Purple Rain. That's all I know, though. That's it. That's all I know. So literally. So it's all day, every day. That's what you get. Purple rain. Purple rain. Okay, we have one more in the would your spouse rather category. And the stakes are getting high because we are nine for nine.
55 Whoa. Okay. I do not. I'm going to ask this one. Okay. You choose. you're able to travel back in time or travel to the future. Oh, man, that's it. Back in time, travel to the future.
17 Okay, Jim Gaffigan. okay ready yeah travel back in time a future what purple rain purple rain no we're nine for ten now what are you talking about the future because the past i can somewhat visualize i thought you'd want to go back and hold your babies again think about it i was gonna go back in time, it'd be back to like see Jesus or something. Oh, oh yeah, that too. But if I go to the future, then I would know what investments I could make. I would know what sports bets. you're thinking about greed and money and selfishness. Okay, fantastic. Didn't know you had it in you. And I would know what I didn't have to worry about in life. Oh man, you, you lost it with that one. Okay, but now the pressure's off because we don't have our perfect score, but it's a good thing.
11 Oh, I wanted a perfect score. All right, Let's cut the episode. Can I ask you about favorite things? Yeah. Favorite things. These are also tough because they're not so either or. Yeah. What's your favorite song all time? I know this one. I'll be honest. Yeah. I think you do. Okay. Water runs dry. Yes. Boys to men. You nailed it. Ugh. And there's been some discrepancy over this, but I did. Because it could be like Bone Thugs in Harmony. Bum, bum, bum, bum. Why are we singing on this? I was singing so much to that. I never publicly sing. Okay, you ask me one of your favorite things. What is your favorite book in the Bible? Oh, you know this. Actually, I don't totally.
03 I'll give you one hint. It's in the New Testament. Okay, I had that figured out. Think about it. Oh, man. By a landslide. It's not even close. Shoot, now you're making me feel bad for not just crushing it. I did a whole series on it. Like, Judah, you can't get too many hints. You've done series on a lot of things. Okay, I said Colossians. That's it? But Colossians, the most Jesus-centered book in the Bible. It is so amazing. I got a fun one okay who's your celebrity crush okay I know what I'm gonna write so that we can get it right but I feel like well yeah Oh. He tried to peek at my paper, little cheater. I can't remember his first name. I really... Oh, yeah. No, I got it. I got it. He tried to cheat, ladies and gentlemen. No, no.
54 Don't worry. I could not... I couldn't remember Idris. Idris Elba. Idris Elba. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, he's... It's the British accent. Just literally... And the just cool... Just a wonderful, beautiful, amazing human. But you know what... I don't fault you for that. You know what movie got me? was the one he did with, was it with Kate Winslet where they were in an airplane crash on a mountain and he was so heroic for her. Oh, yeah. Yeah, babe. Idris Elba definitely currently. But in my heart of hearts, if I could pick anybody anytime going back to Legends of the Fall Brad Pitt. Yeah, very specifically Legends of the Fall Brad Pitt. I saw it coming. I thought about it. But Idris is way cooler. Sorry, Brad. Okay. What is your favorite coffee order?
45 I'm writing this for you. Okay. Okay. Oatmeal and cappuccino. Boom! Purple rain! Purple rain! This could get intense. New category. This could get intense. By the way, I've only missed one. In case anyone's listening, caring, counting, we have only missed one. Ladies and gentlemen, I don't want to brag, but this is what happens when you stick it out for 22 years. Stick it out. It makes it sound so. Okay.
37 I feel like when we're done with this podcast, I want to challenge other married couples to do the same amount of questions and see if they could get any better than us. You know what would be fun for season two is let's do an episode where we bring on one of our favorite couples, maybe even a celebrity couple, and we make them do this on the podcast. I would love to hear if any other couple can best ask us. Yeah, I mean, I don't want to brag. We're like 12 out of 13 now or something. Yeah, pretty good. Okay, but this one's tough. This one's tough. What is your spouse pet peeve? You mean you're asking what is my pet peeve? Oh, yeah. No, I thought you had to identify my pet peeve. Or are you identifying yours? Are you writing down yours? Whichever one you want. I want you to identify what my pet peeve is. Do you know what my pet peeve is? Okay. Of course you do. Oh, yeah. This actually became a very easy question.
29 I just realized. what'd you say spots on your clothes yeah spilling things on my clothes it's outrageous I will literally take off the clothes and just give them to someone and move on I can't handle it yes we can thank your mother for that I'm going to ask the same question what is my pet peeve this is what I was afraid of your pet this is definitely something that causes tension i got it what'd you say phone no oh texting i thought for sure no being late when you have to make all it is oh no no no no no i need i need to go back in time now you go to the future i need to go back in time i knew that i actually the phone hit me and it was so all-consuming i was like it has to be the phone it drives her nuts But you're right, it's definitely a lack of timeliness on my part. Yeah, the phone doesn't create the gut level agitation that being late does.
29 All right. One thing you wish I would get rid of. One thing you wish I would stop doing. One thing you wish I would... Easy. Yeah, stop doing it. The get rid of can't just be like an item. Okay. Easy? Oh, no brainer. No brainer? Yeah. For me to get rid of or stop doing. Is it stop doing or get rid of? They're kind of similar. Oh man, oh man. How do I do this? How do I not know this? It's not a habit. It's just something that you possess in a way that I wish you wouldn't possess.
14 Oh man, I can't think of anything. Ladies and gentlemen, on the not-so-newlywed game, I am officially stumped. I admit, I got nothing. What did you say? I'm going to say this, and you're going to... It's going to be like being late. You're going to realize, oh my gosh, yes. You're being so loud. No, I love your loudness. Oh, thank you. Facial hair. Wait, what? I wish you would get rid of your facial hair or stop growing out a mustache. What are you talking about right now? How many times have I begged you? You love... I just have to keep it trimmed. That's what you always say. No, that's a concession. That's a concession? You don't know. Renee, I know you liked my face super smooth for so long, but I thought you liked a level of the facial hair. Not when it gets long, you've made that abundantly clear. Nope. You literally just wish I would shave off all my facial hair. Yes, because your lips are so phenomenal, and kissing you is the most euphoric experience on the planet, and your facial hair gets in the way of that.
15 This is devastating news. No, ask our friends. They would have gotten that one right on our behalf. I think you've just stopped listening to my complaints because you want to keep it. When did the not-so-newlywed game become a therapy session? Once we got to the this-could-get-tense category. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Well, that about wraps up this episode. You're not doing that, you know. Okay. I'm going to ask you, what is my worst habit? Okay. I think I know. Really? You think you know. Oh, gosh. Okay. Okay, what'd you say? Well, it just happened today. So it's like interrupting phone calls on or FaceTime and being like, Judah, you have to go. Let's go. And you'll say it out loud and I'll be on a FaceTime and be like, well, I know it's 1057 and we start recording at 11, but like I still got a couple minutes here, but you'll just say it.
12 Oh, shoot. You're right. I put problem solving probably because he just talked about it. Oh, that's similar category. But talking over your phone calls has been something that I have had a bad habit of for probably our whole marriage. And I need to change that. Oh, you're just strong and confident. Okay, we're not doing so great on the this could get tense category. But maybe that's a good thing. Maybe that's like we don't know off the top of our head what completely drives us crazy about each other. That's true. Okay, let's end on a fun note. Let's end on a fun note. Here we go. We're coming to a close. We're still basically going to the Baseball Hall of Fame. We're still batting. It's got to be 6, 700. Yeah, I'll count up at the end. I think we've missed four. You can start talking or something, and I'll count up at the end. Yeah, we have missed four. You're right, we've missed four. But we've missed the last three in a row, so we're kind of... You can start talking, and I'll just count them up at the end. Ladies and gentlemen, that is a snapshot of our existence together.
10 You know what? At some point, Judas is going to start talking, and I'll collect my thoughts and figure out our plans, our flight plans, what we're going to do tomorrow or the rest of the night. He'll just start talking. It'll give me ample time to think through everything I need to think through. Well said. All right. What's your ideal date? By the way, marriage lasts for those who still date each other. You got to keep dating. You got to keep dating. You got to keep dating. Date night is important. By the way, we're going to have a couple of days to ourselves the next couple of days. Oh, our kids are going to youth camp. I'm so excited. Oh, man. Take them. Take them, Lord. Okay. I'm writing my ideal date. Do you have it? Hmm.
51 My ideal date. Ugh. I'm dreaming of this ideal date right now. It's going to be amazing. Maybe we could go on this ideal date while our kids are away at camp. Okay. Okay. What did you say? I said we get outside. Yes. I said nature. Nature. Yep. We have a wonderful dinner reservation somewhere. I said dinner. We have a wonderful conversation. I said wine, which is kind of like a wonderful conversation. Wine is wonderful conversation. Yeah. Chelsea drinks. I don't. I don't want to brag. I don't want to brag. And then we end with sex in a movie. I said nature, dinner, wine, sex. Hey! Hey! That's pretty much nailed it. I mean, that's nailed it. I mean, that could also be four points. Okay. What do you got for me? Okay. What is your dream vacation? I haven't.
43 It's one word. You do? Oh. It's one word. Okay. What'd you say? Italy. Oh, shoot. And I realized what a blessing it is to even say that or the fact that I even got to go there. But we have been there a few times and the Italian culture, the Italian people, the Italian coastline, the Italian food. We had been married for a lot of years. 20 years. 20 years. No, 1870. 18 years because you never wanted to travel anywhere and do anything okay it's just that i traveled a lot as a kid yeah you traveled a lot as a kid and you've done a lot for speaking events and so you never wanted to travel for a vacation right and i literally had to say please will you just go to europe with me we've never been please can we do it once and you did it and you fell in love with it oh it made me so happy but i got this wrong because you've been watching youtube videos on costa rica lately so i wrote costa rica down excited about costa rica yeah I really really am but I like Italy and I liked it I don't know that makes me so happy that you said that because that's not what you would have said at the beginning of our marriage very very true your last question for me last?
58 oh man alright this is a fun one here we go if you had to choose an actor or an actress in your case to play you in a movie who would you choose oh shoot whoa whoa Who would I choose? I got it. I don't know if you'll choose her, but... This is a tough one. Is it? It is, right? Yes. But I actually got a name. I don't know why. But I don't know. I think this person could do a phenomenal job. She's a wonderful actress. See, I just narrowed it down for you. She could do a phenomenal job. She's a wonderful actress. Wow, that really narrows it down. Okay. I said Sandra Bullock. No way.
51 I put Margot Robbie. Oh. And then in parentheses Julia Roberts because for years you got the Julia Roberts comment that you look like her. Oh. I actually thought about Margot Robbie because remember when she played Tanya Harding? Oh, yes. And my sister and I were watching that movie together and we're like, you know, if you've lived a life and Margot Robbie is playing you, you can't be doing that bad. I think Margot Robbie is so beautiful. so beautiful oh man okay my last question for you i totally set myself up what do you love the most about me oh wow what do i love most about you that is really hard for me and i'm shocked and by the way it's honestly hard because i love so much about you and when one is the number one it's like well no maybe it's maybe it's okay i chose something superficial i just chose something superficial-ish if that helps is that cheating i don't know maybe we just get a half point okay skin yes chelsea has the softest, most youthful skin. It is so soft. In fact, one of her closest friends, she'll like hold Chelsea's hand and just be like, oh my word, this is the softest hand in the world.
04 Yes. You love my skin. It's true. And I feel my mom's skin and her skin is so soft too. And I think, ugh. It's DNA. Yeah, it is DNA. Well, playing the not so newlywed game, but hey, it's actually been fun. It has. And bonding and insightful. I think if you're going on a date this week and you're married, this is our toolkit. Yeah, it's our toolkit for the day. Here it is. And you're a married couple, encourage you to play a version of this game and come prepared with questions and see how well you know each other and the things that surprise you. Okay. Wow. That's such a good idea for a date. Right? What surprised you the most?
40 Sandra Bullock? No, I'm kidding. Man, I don't know if I was surprised. No, that's pretty good. What surprised you the most? I mean, I think this is more of a general statement, but what surprised me the most was probably how poorly we did in the this could get tense category. Yeah. And maybe that's a good thing that it shows that we don't harp on the things that bug us about each other so much. What was our final score? Do you know? Okay. For anybody who is wondering the final score. I was wondering. Right. Here we have it. Out of 22 questions, we got 16 of them right. Sweet 16. Sweet 16. But here is the most intriguing part. Out of the six that we got wrong, you got four of them wrong and I got two of them wrong. So I think technically that makes me the winner. Well, I'm glad to announce that this episode will never air and it will never see the light of day.
39 I lost. Actually, let's be honest. I knew I was going to lose. You know me so well. So congratulations. And for everyone that's going to go, take this on a date night. Make sure you keep score. And let us know. Because that's what matters. And because this is in good faith, we're going to end with a prayer. You pray. Jesus, thank you so much that you've given us joy and life and beautiful things in our past that we can look at and remember. And great things in our future that we can look forward to and be excited about. I pray for marriages everywhere. God, I pray that you would enable couples to connect over fun things in life. I know life can be hard and life can be serious, but I pray that you would take this simple tool and help couples to connect and have a fun time and laugh together and reconnect. Thank you that you care about our joy and our marriages.
32 In Jesus' name, amen.
