Mark chapter 1 and verse 1. The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. It is written in Isaiah the prophet, I will send my messenger ahead of you who will prepare your way. A voice of one calling in the desert, prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. John wore clothing made of camel's hair with a leather belt round his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. And this was his message. After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I'm not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. Thanks be to God for his word. …

I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. Amen. Father, help us now as we turn to the Bible, that you will be our teacher, that the Holy Spirit will enable us to think properly, to respond humbly, and that we might find that, as it were, Christ stands in the midst of us, not only as the one who orchestrates our praise, but also as the one who preaches the Word home to our hearts. Only you, O God, can accomplish this, and it is to you we look. In Jesus' name, amen. …
… indulge in luxury are in palaces. But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. Keep going. This is the one about whom it is written, I will send my messenger ahead of you who will prepare your way before you. Hold that frame. Hold that frame. Hold that frame. Hold that frame. This is the one. Do you remember what Jesus said to John? The deaf hear, the blind see. Do you remember what John asked Jesus, "'Are you the one?' Look what Jesus said about John. This is the one." Here's what I'm trying to say. John stopped believing in Jesus, but Jesus never stopped believing in John. Isn't that good to know that if I'm faithless, he remains faithful? By the way, John didn't stop believing long. The Bible records that he was actually willing to give his life for Jesus in prison. Even when they cut his head off, he didn't turn back from what he knew was right. …
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. May you have a seat. so if there's anything that we've noticed i don't know if you noticed this about this season right now the season of advent the season leading up to christmas um it seems like the season this season what we're doing right now what we're in the midst of is marked by so well so much is marked by so many things but it is marked by being in a hurry right it's being rushed being frenzied that we talk about them frenzy shopping or or being harried in fact the the term hustle and bustle. We've heard the term hustle and bustle. I think the only time I've ever heard the phrase or the term hustle and bustle is in relation to this season we're in right now. It's so unique. It's such a busy time. In fact, I looked, I asked a little internet, like, what's the busiest time of the year? And they're like, now, basically, now is the busiest time of the year. And there's so many people who are in a hurry. Like last week, we talked about this. Last week, Advent, this time of waiting or life of waiting is marked by worry. This week we recognize that waiting, for so many of us, is marked by hurry. And yet we ask the question, like right now you might be, again, frenzy, tussle and bustle, in a hurry. But how strange it is to be in a hurry and how …
Look at the reply in chapter 3. Behold, I send my messenger. Now, there's a lot going on here. Who is the I that is speaking? It is the Lord God Almighty. And who is the messenger that he will send? Jesus gives us this answer in Matthew 11.10, speaking about John the Baptist. Jesus says, this is the one about whom it is written, I will send my messenger ahead of you who will prepare the way before you. So we know from the New Testament that this is specifically fulfilled with the ministry of John the Baptist who will prepare the way for Jesus. He is the messenger that Malachi foretold. He is the Elijah to come in Malachi 4, though at one point John is going to deny that because he's not the physical reincarnation of some Elijah, but he is in the spirit of Elijah. He is the messenger who prepares the way. But look at what else Malachi says. The messenger, he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple, the messenger of the covenant whom you delight, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. …
