If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, regard him as you would a pagan or a tax collector. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the assembly. If he refuses to hear the assembly also, let him be to you as a Gentile or a tax collector. And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican. And if he refuse to hear them, tell it unto the church: and if he refuse to hear the church also, let him be unto thee as the Gentile and the publican.

Mike Schmitz, 2026-09-05 · Scripture reading

… He says, okay, basically, if you're going to be my disciple, if your brother sins against you, go and... Go and... Go and what? If your brother sins against you, go and what? I think we go and I think we tell, but I think we go and tell everyone except for the person who's involved. and then this first blind spot we have to look at this weekend is something that every one of us has been hurt by. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven. Whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where the two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among you. The authority of the keys is described in terms of binding and loosing. terms which were used by the Jewish elders for the authority to interpret to apply God's law to particular cases into membership and who would not and so that phrase to bind is to shut to forbid to loose is to open or permit the king the keys of the kingdom are the authority to make known the will of God by the preaching of the gospel and church discipline, by which the kingdom of heaven is open to believers and shut against unbelievers. And that is the quote of the founder of the Heidelberg Catechism, Euthinus. Let's consider these two keys tonight. …

… by the testimony of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector. I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven. And whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them. Now flip with me over to Galatians chapter 6. Matthew chapter 18, verse 15 through 20. And we saw that whole picture of treat him as you would a pagan or tax collector, excommunication from the church addressed in 1 Corinthians 5. Now look at Galatians chapter 6 and listen to what Scripture teaches there. Galatians chapter 6 verse 1, Paul writes, Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. …

… expressed in the whole context surrounding Matthew chapter 18, verse 15 through 20. We talked about approaching church discipline. How does Jesus approach church discipline? He tells us we need childlike humility. It takes a great deal of humility to confront one another in a way that honors Christ in their sin. And then it takes a great deal of humility to receive correction from one another. We need childlike humility. We need a deep concern for holiness. We need to be serious about sin. We have become so casual with sin. Thank you. we today are so flippant with the holiness of God. And we need a deep concern for holiness. We need to see sin, not like our culture sees it, but like a holy God sees it. such a way that we would not be surprised to hear Jesus say, if your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. Sin is that serious. We need a deep concern for holiness along the way. …
