… that are examples or definitions of God's mercy to you. Here's what it says, Psalm 103, verse 2 to 11. I will not forget the glorious things that God does for me. He forgives, you might circle that, he forgives all my sins. He heals me, that's mercy. He ransoms me from hell, that's mercy. He surrounds me with loving kindness, that's mercy. He fills my life with good things. He is merciful and tender. Toward those who don't deserve it, that's mercy. He's slow to get angry. I'm glad for that, that's mercy. He never bears a grudge. Aren't you glad for that one? Some of you don't believe that. You think that something you did a long time ago, God's still trying to get even with you for it. Anything bad happens in your life, go, God's getting even with me. God, it says, does not carry a grudge. He's not getting even. How many times have you heard me say, God is not mad at you, he's mad about you. …
… steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagles. That phrase, steadfast love, it is one word in the Hebrew, it's hesed. No hyperbole here, but I actually think hesed is the most powerful word for sure in all of the Old Testament, if not in all of the Bible. It's used some 251 times in the Old Testament, 127 of those times it's used in the Psalms. Many of those times it's used by David. It's one of David's favorite words. Chesed means God's unending, unfailing, covenant faithfulness to his people. One of the first places we see chesed, steadfast love, it's in Exodus chapter 34. Here are the people of God. They have sinned egregiously against God. They had constructed a golden calf. They had worshiped this golden calf in place of God. God then says to Moses, Moses, that's it. You can go into the promised land because I did promise that to you. I'm just not going with you. …
… who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good as long as you live so that your youth is renewed like the eagles. The Lord works vindication and justice for all who are oppressed. He made known his ways to Moses, his acts to the people of Israel, The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not always accuse, nor will he keep his anger forever. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far he removes our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion for his children, so the Lord has compassion for those who fear him. For he knows how we were made, he remembers that we are dust. …
