… You know, throughout the Bible, the Bible describes itself as a light. For example, in Psalm 119, verse 105, the psalmist said, your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Or in Philippians 2 verses 15 and 16, Paul wrote that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation among whom you appear as lights in the world holding fast the word of life. I like 2 Peter 1 19. Jot that down. Peter said, so we have the prophetic word, that's referring to the word of God, made more sure to which you do well to pay attention as a lamp shining in a dark place until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts. Maybe you've used a nightlight before. You know what a nightlight does. Glows in the middle of the night. If you're a child, it can give you comfort if you're afraid of the dark. As an adult, nightlights are helpful. If you're getting up in the middle of the night, they go to the bathroom or to the kitchen, whichever one it is. It's good to have a light and the darkness to give you direction. Now, the only time a nightlight is absolutely of no use is in the daylight. …
… Psalm 119, 105. Your word is a lamp to my feet. Your word, God, is a light to my path. We don't have our quiet times in a legalistic way. No, we want to load our hearts up with truth because we live in a world where we're being sold lies and pushed on lies. Lies about who we are. Lies about what life's about. Lies about God's thoughts on us. We need to always bring what God's told us to bring. And then lastly, we close with this. What you say. Hey, bear. Hey, bear. Right? Hey, bear. I'm not going to be surprised and I don't want to do the surprising. I'm going to say that over and over. I'm going to say it over. I'm going to say it. Right, you go, I don't need to say it because I got a bell on my backpack. I'm sure the bears love your dinner bell. I'm sure they love it. But hey, bear. Hey, bear. Hey, bear. Hey, bear. …
… Psalm 119 describes the power of the word. David said, your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. It gives me direction. helps me make sense out of this crazy world. So the sower, proclaimer of the truth, seed, word of God, gospel, message of salvation. Let me give you a caution. Anybody who sows seed needs to sow just the seed. If you mix that seed with other stuff and dilute it, it becomes dangerous. see back in Leviticus chapter 19 there's this odd thing that God dumps into the law for the children of Israel he's giving them all sorts of laws and then he says you shall not sow your field with mixed seed a lot of commentators scratch their head at that verse wonder why is that dropped in there it seems that God is saying I want holiness and separation to be such a part of your existence that it even shows up in how you plant your fields. Don't plant your fields with mixed seed. Likewise, don't mix the gospel. Don't add philosophy to the gospel. Don't add psychology to the gospel. Don't add tradition to the gospel. Don't add ritual to the gospel. …
… How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth. Through your precepts I get understanding, therefore I hate every false way. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. A few verses down, verse 111. Your testimonies I have taken as a heritage forever, for they are the rejoicing of my heart. Verse 145. Don't worry, we're almost done. Verse 145. I cry out with my whole heart, hear me, O Lord. I will keep your statutes. I cry out to you, save me, and I will keep your testimonies. I rise before the dawning of the morning and cry for help. I hope in your word. How's that for attitude towards scripture? That's the right attitude. That's the be diligent, be eager. that's the right attitude. I don't know if you've heard the name George Mueller, but George Mueller was a man of faith. Over a century ago in England, the Bristol orphanage, he took care of hundreds, thousands of children off the streets, believing God for the provisions completely by faith, very successful. But this is what he said. George Mueller wrote this, quote, the vigor of our spiritual life will be in exact proportion to the place held by the Bible in our life and thoughts. I solemnly state this from the experience of 54 years. The first three years after conversion, I neglected the Word of God. Since I began to search it diligently, the blessing has been wonderful. Great has been the blessing from consecutive, diligent, daily …
What does God do? he gives you what you need to take the next step why scripture says this your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path god your word directs my step if god's word is a lamp unto my feet it doesn't say it's a spotlight to the whole map God's not well I want to see step seven eight nine before I take one two and three God's gonna say I'm not going to show you seven eight nine until you take one and two and three and four and five and six now you can see step seven your word is a lamp unto our feet God doesn't need to show you the whole picture you trust him to simply take the next step he is good he's a good God he loves you The sheep know the voice of the shepherd. So how does he guide? Sometimes God will just open up a door like, wow, that's God. But it doesn't mean it's gonna be easy. …
I'm showing them the way. I am a guide to the blind. Number two, I'm a light to those who are in darkness. I learned as a kid, thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. This Jewish person knows the prophecies about the Messiah and to some degree embodied in the nation of Israel, that they would be a light to the nations. They were supposed to be that light, that beacon shining amidst a dark world that people might stream to it and say, tell us about your God. You have the truth. They say, I'm a light. I'm an instructor to the foolish. The fool says in his heart, there is no God. I'm no fool. I'm not an atheist. I'm not an agnostic. I know there's a God. Didn't we learn in Proverbs, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. I fear the Lord. And I want to help the fools out there to know the true God. I'm a teacher. …
… As a familiar passage from Psalm 119 says, Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. On April 18, 1521, before the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Germany, Martin Luther defiantly refused to recant his writings and the false teachings within them. He said this, Unless I am convinced by the testimonies of Scripture or evident reason. For I believe neither the Pope nor councils alone, since it is established that they have often erred and contradicted themselves. I am the prisoner of the scripture cited by me, and my conscience has been taken captive by the word of God. I neither can nor will recant anything, since it is neither safe nor right to act against conscience. God help me. Amen. So Luther asserted that his conscience was captive to the word of God. He declared that he could not go against scripture. He highlighted also that the pope and councils have historically been susceptible to error and have been corrected. …
… It is true. It is righteous, invaluable, and sweet to the taste. Psalm 119, 105 says the Bible, the word of God gives guidance and direction for the future. Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light into my path. You want to know God's will, God's purpose for your life? Go to the word. It gives guidance and direction for your life. Isaiah chapter 40, verse 1 through 11, comfort and strength in our troubles. Comfort, comfort, my people. That's how Isaiah 40 starts, and it comes to the in and it says you will mount up with wings as eagles. You will run and not grow weary. You will walk and not be faint. Comfort and strength in our troubles. John 1, 1 through 14 tells us that the Bible, the Word of God reveals Jesus himself. John 17, 17 says it is the source of truth and holiness. Philippians 4, 4 through 7 says it gives us peace amidst anxiety. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition present your request to God. And what does the Bible will promise you the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and will guard your minds in Christ Jesus. …
… Psalm 119, 105 says, your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. So I would start in God's word. And Proverbs 16, nine says, a man's heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps. So I would say that in context to these verses, to stay on the paths of righteousness means to stay in his word and to stay in close proximity to the shepherd. Funny enough, when you think of the shepherd's crook, it's about six to eight feet tall. It's got a big bend on it. And if I'm not doing well during this message, you'll see one come out the side here. and the crook is kind of interesting. I don't know if you know this, but sheep don't naturally raise their head up. They normally keep their heads low and when they get off path, it's because they aren't looking around and so a lot of times the shepherd's job is to take the lead sheep and pull his head up and I hope that today you sense God doing that for you to lift your head and to see that his paths to follow are righteous. …
… Word of God. And this is the only book that's ever been written where the author himself comes to sit with you to show you what he wrote. And when I sit and I read this book, your word is a lamp unto my feet and it's a light unto my what? My path. It shows me what to do. It shows me what not to do. It shows me what to do when I haven't been doing what I'm supposed to be doing. And so God's word, I need daily reading because this is my true mirror. This is my true identity that shows me who I really am. This book reminds me, you're a nobody trying to tell the world about a somebody. If I don't read it, I think I'm a somebody and that I'm bigger or greater than I really am. I am just a servant. Anybody else? If I forget to read it, I forget who I really am. And so you need daily reading because that nourishes your soul. …
… Both the written Word and the living Word are light for a dark world. Psalm 119, verse 105, Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. John 8, verse 12, Jesus said, I am the light of the world. Both the living Word and the written Word are light. Both the living Word and the written Word are absolute truth. John chapter 7, verse 17, Jesus speaking to the Father said, Thy word is truth. That settles it, folks. Jesus said it. But then Jesus himself said in John 14, 6, I am the truth. The living word and the written word. There are those people who try to tell us, well, you know, the Bible, my goodness, that was written by men, so we would expect to find some error in it because it was written by men. It was, men were the human instruments that brought the Bible. Well, do you think that the humanity of Mary made Jesus less than perfect? …
