… the practical part. What do we do? First, we pray. First, we pray like David in Psalm 119, open my eyes that I might behold wondrous things out of thy law. That's our prayer. Open my eyes. Speak, Lord, your servant hears. So we want to pray before we read this book. R.W. Dale said, Study without prayer is atheism. Prayer without study, no. study without prayer is atheism. Prayer without study is presumption. That's it. You're just presuming. Okay. So what do we do? Here's the three words. And if you are taking notes, write these down. Observation, interpretation, application. That's how you study the Bible. Observation, interpretation, application. You read any text, you read any chapter, you make an observation. Based on what you observe, you make an interpretation. Based upon how you interpret it, now you make an application to your personal life. Those are the three steps you need to take. Most people just open the Bible and immediately go to step number three. They think, what does this mean to me personally? …
… It is what the psalmist said in Psalm 119. He said, open my eyes that I might behold wondrous things out of thy law. That's the prayer. Open my eyes that I might see wondrous things from your word. Let Jesus Christ exercise his authority over any indifference, disinterest, dispassionate attitude that we might have. That's authority over dispassion, the blasé feeling. Second is his authority over demons. Now the story goes on. He's in the synagogue. Verse 23, there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. He has a demon. And he cried out. Literally, he screamed. He shrieked. That'd be an interesting day at church. Saying, let us alone. What have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Did you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God. But Jesus rebuked him, saying, be quiet and come out of him. And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him. Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, what is this? What new doctrine is this? For, here's the word again, with authority he commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him. …
… so pray and ask ask God for the almighty supernatural gift of focus second enlighten my eyes open my eyes psalm 119 18 that I may behold wondrous things out of your law we need focus when we sit down to meet with God and his word and we need light. We need understanding. We need God by the power of his spirit to help us understand the word that he's given us here. My favorite verse for this prayer is 2 Timothy 2 verse 7. Paul says to his young disciple, think over what I say for the Lord will give you understanding in everything. think over what I say for the Lord will give you understanding in everything it's pretty amazing acknowledgement when you stop to think about it he says in essence timothy i know that some of what i'm writing to you right now it's not going to make sense to you at least not immediately and when that happens you're going to be tempted to think you can't understand it but you can Thank you. …
… A heart that belongs to God is a heart that longs to be taught by God. Open my eyes that I may see wondrous things out of your law. This is the heart that comes to God and doesn't say, I've already made up my mind, I have my own convictions about all of this. It's a heart that bows low to the Scripture in a teachable spirit. It is a spirit that has been conquered. Put it that way. It's been conquered. It means that our pride and our self-will is set aside. And we come to the Word as it is being implanted into us with the purpose of bearing fruit in total humility, bowing completely to God's will. because this maximizes our salvation. Why wouldn't you do that if it's able to save your souls? And he's talking about the full scope of salvation, past, present, and future. It is the Word that saved you. You heard the gospel. You were saved from the penalty of sin. …
