How to Study Your Bible
Skip Heitzig, 2026-08-09

… You have to probably turn a page like I did. Psalm 119, verse 97. Oh, how I love your law. Listen, it is my meditation all the day. You, through your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies, for they are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep your precepts. I have restrained my feet from every evil way, that I may keep your word. I have not departed from your judgments, for you yourself have taught me. How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth. Through your precepts I get understanding, therefore I hate every false way. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. A few verses down, verse 111. Your testimonies I have taken as a heritage forever, for they are the rejoicing of my heart. Verse 145. Don't worry, we're almost done. Verse 145. I cry out with my whole heart, hear me, O Lord. I will keep your statutes. I cry out to you, save me, and I will keep your testimonies. I rise before the dawning of the morning and cry for help. I hope in your word. How's that for attitude towards scripture? That's the right attitude. That's the be diligent, be eager. …

Nehemiah 12-13
Skip Heitzig, 2026-02-18

… But Lord, like the psalmist said, Oh, how I love thy law. It is my meditation all the day. And Father, we pray that these stories, though some of us, I believe, are familiar with them, would provide key principles that govern our lives. that your word would indeed be a lamp to our feet, a light unto our path, that we would see clearly in a dark world and we would navigate accordingly, we ask in Jesus' name. Amen. So chapter 6, the wall was finished. In 52 days from the day it started, 52 days later, the wall was completed. Chapters 8, 9, and 10, a revival breaks out. People gather in Jerusalem, ask Ezra to read from the book of the law. He pulls out the Pentateuch scroll, starts reading the law of God for five to six hours. People were standing up during that time. They hadn't heard that much scripture ever. It brought conviction to their heart. They prayed prayers of repentance and commitment. By the time we get to chapter 10, after the prayer in chapter 9, chapter 10, they sign a covenant. …

Hearers and Doers (James 1:19-25)
John MacArthur, 2023-08-20

… end. Because, verse 97, oh, how I love your law. It is my meditation all the day. That's the testimony of a transformed life. Godly, true believers are described also in Psalm 1 as those who delight in the law of the Lord, and in His law they meditate day and night. The defining, again, the defining reality of true Christianity is a hunger for the Word of God, a love for the Word of God, a desire to hear the Word of God, to delight in the Word of God, and to obey it. And though that is the Old Testament, it's not the only place where this is emphasized. In fact, I want to take you to the Gospel of John and hear how our Lord essentially says the same thing repeatedly in the gospel of John, that true believers are identified by their commitment to the Word of God, the Scripture. Let's start out in John 5, and I'm just going to read you a few select portions out of John's gospel. John 5, 37 to 40, and these are all coming right out of the lips of our Lord. Verse 37 of John 5, And the Father who sent me, He has testified of me. …

… WHICH I HAVE LOVED. I WILL MEDITATE IN THY STATUTES. LOOK IF YOU WILL IN VERSE 97, OH HOW I LOVE THY LAW, IT IS MY MEDITATION ALL THE DAY. LOOK IN VERSE 99, I HAVE MORE UNDERSTANDING THAN ALL MY TEACHERS, FOR THY TESTIMONIES ARE MY MEDITATION. LOOK IN VERSE 148, MINE EYES PREVENT THE NIGHT WATCHES THAT I MIGHT MEDITATE IN THY WORD. MEDITATE, MEDITATE, MEDITATE. THAT IS, MY DEAR FRIEND, WHEN YOU INTERNALIZE THE WORD OF GOD. AND FOR YOU TO MEDITATE, IT TAKES TIME, IT TAKES QUIETNESS, IT TAKES CONCENTRATION, AND THAT IS WHY YOU NEED THAT QUIET TIME. BUT NOT ONLY DO YOU DO THAT IN YOUR QUIET TIME, THEN IT STAYS WITH YOU ALL THE DAY long. Have you ever driven a stick shift automobile? When you first get that stick shift automobile, you say, now what is this? That's first, second, third, fourth. How does it work? You know, and you're just going through that thing and remembering to put the clutch in and all that. But after a while, if you drive an automobile like that, you never think about that anymore. …
