… All that pertains to life and godliness through the knowledge of him who called us. Psalm 19, David said, the law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul. The testimony This book is different. the first time I carried my Bible to church, I may have told you this, it was the church I grew up in. I had just gotten saved by watching Billy Graham on television. I knew I needed a Bible. I got one. I started reading it. I knew I needed to go to church. The only church I knew was St. Joan of Arc Church, the Catholic church that I grew up in. So I show up at church with my Bible in hand. It was a brown Bible like this one, not this one, but I have the original one. And I'm carrying it in church. I get stopped by an usher who actually looked at me and said, what are you bringing that thing in here for? Can you imagine that question being asked in a church? What are you doing bringing that thing in here for? Really? What am I supposed to bring? A coloring book? …
… We have to do that. In Psalm 19, verse 7, the psalmist writes, the law of the Lord is perfect. converting the soul. The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. Can you say amen to that? I love that. Are you simple? You can become wise. Listen, are you in some way not being successful or led by God in the things that you should be? Listen, turn to him. The very law of the Lord is perfect, the guidance of God. When the Bible here says the law, He's not taking the Ten Commandments and hitting you up over the side of the head with them. He's giving you the Ten Commandments, and for that matter, all the commandments, I even like to go this far. Not only the Ten Commandments, but all the commandments of God, I like to go this far. But everything that is good, that is God, God wants to work it into you. I'm a big fan, I think you know this, of learning to be still, and we'll see it today if I'm faithful to the notes, to be still and discover that he is God. …
… I'm reading from the King James Version. Psalm 19, verse 7. The law of the Lord. Now again, let me remind you, this could just as easily be translated the word of the Lord or simply the Bible. So I'll say the word of the Lord. The word of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul. The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart. The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever. The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold, and they're sweeter than the honey and the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is your servant warned, and in keeping of them there is great reward. Beautiful. Now let's start identifying the nine things we need to know about the Bible. If you're taking notes, point number one, the word of God is perfect. …
… and dig into the word of God, it will refresh you. Psalm 19 verse seven says, The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul. The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The word that the psalmist uses there for converts means to revive, to restore, and to transform. Now when we say the law of the Lord, that could just as easily be translated the word of the Lord or simply the Bible. In other words, the Bible restores you. The Bible refreshes you. The Bible transforms you. I can think of so many times in my life where my mind was going in the wrong direction. Have you ever been gripped by fear, worry, or anxiety and found by just quoting the right scripture that it sort of righted you? Or when you're dealing with pain or with grief? You know, we just marked 13 years since our son Christopher went to be with the Lord. And since that has happened, I've spoken to countless families who've lost loved ones, especially children. …
… I'd be happy if you'd listened just once to this teaching called Hell's Best Kept Secret. The Bible says in Psalm 19, verse 7, the law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul. What is it the Bible says is perfect and converts the soul? Well, Scripture makes it very clear. The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul. To illustrate the function of God's law, let's look at civil law. Imagine if I said to you, I've got some great news for you. This is good news. Someone just paid a $25,000 speeding fine on your behalf. You probably respond by saying, what are you talking about? That's not good news. Doesn't make any sense. I don't have a $25,000 speeding fine. My good news wouldn't be good news to you. it would be foolishness. Even more than that, it would be offensive to you because I'm insinuating you've broken the law when you don't think you have. But if I was to put it this way, it may make more sense. On your way to this meeting today, the law clocked you going 55 miles an hour through an area set aside for a blind children's convention. There were 10 clear warning signs stating that 15 miles an hour was the maximum speed. There's a $25,000 fine. What you did was very dangerous. …
… A few verses down from that, the psalmist says, The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul. The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. For 15 centuries, God has spoken through the entirety of the Old Testament. He has communicated. and then there was silence. Let me explain. If you were to just open your Bible, you would find in the Old Testament 39 books, beginning in Genesis and ending in Malachi. That represents 1,500 years of Old Testament history. If you were finishing the book of Malachi and you just flipped the page, you'd be in the New Testament. So you might think that God just continued his revelation from the Old Testament into the New, but that didn't happen. What happened is God spoke for 1,500 years, and then there was a 400-year gap where he said absolutely nothing. There was no angelic visit. There were no miracles. There was no prophetic utterance. The prophets weren't speaking. 400 years of silence. That's why they are called the 400 silent years. In the broadcasting business, that's called dead air. And it is the one thing that broadcasters fear the most. If the signal doesn't get out, if there's a mistake on our end, or if there's a user error, or if a wire is severed, or a storm knocks out the tower, you have dead air. There's no broadcast, radio silence. And so there was dead air for 400 silent years. And finally, the silence was broken by a UFO, actually an angel. …
