The Coming of the Lord (Part 6 of 6)
Alistair Begg, 2026-09-07

… test following on Monday. What are you going to say to them? Well, you see, if you never read your Bible and you never read Psalm 46, verses 1 and 2, you're sure not going to use that. But if you did, you might just say, you know what? I could encourage you. Psalm 46. Let me read it to you on the phone. It strengthens. It builds up. It encourages. The Thessalonians' needs were like our needs. They were personal, they were pastoral, and the answer to their needs? Theological. The true pastor must always be a good theologian. I get worried when I hear guys tell me, you know, I'm not a theologian. I know what they mean by that, I think, But if they mean by that, you know, I'm not getting into Christian doctrine and, you know, explaining the Bible and stuff. We ought to be really concerned. Because I have nothing else to say to you except Christian doctrine and theology. Come and ask my advice, my encouragement. The only reason to listen to me is if it comes out of this book. …

… things that I could never imagine going through for even a moment but it does speak of the sovereignty of your God that though your problem may be severe your God is sovereign Psalm 46 verses 1 through 3 he says God is our refuge and strength a very present help in trouble Therefore, in light of that truth, in light of that reality, we will not fear. And then he goes on to give four conditions even. He says, even though the earth be removed, though the mountains be carried in the midst of the sea, though the waters roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with its swelling, it almost feels like there should be something that comes after that. but if you look there at the bottom of the screen, it says, Selah, meaning stop, pause, ponder, and think. That no matter what comes upon you, God is a present help in trouble. And so Isaiah prays, he gives Hezekiah the word of God, which leads us to our third action, which is this, to know what God's word says. …

Encountering the Eternal

… so when we call upon him in times of distress we are calling to the almighty who is attentive to his beloved psalm 46 verse 1 says god is our refuge and strength a very present help in times of trouble you want to know what it means very present it means abundantly available it means extremely close in proximity. This is God in the midst of our suffering. He is very present. He is near. He could not be closer, actually. It's us that need to wake up to this suffering. It clouds our vision. it causes us sometimes to not see things rightly, which is why we must place the word of God above our own feelings and emotions in those moments. And we say, I know I'm feeling this way, but God's word says he's very present in my difficulty. Psalm 145, verses 18 through 19 tell us that the Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call upon him in truth. …

The Belt of Truth
David Platt, 2025-07-23

… that the adversary would like to say to you in that hospital bed, what we read in our church's Bible reading this morning, Psalm 46.1, God is your refuge and your strength. And he's not just present. He is a very present help in trouble. That's who he is for you. He is, he's not just with you. He is for you. Romans 8.31. And if he is for you, then nothing can stand against you, no matter what you are facing. And he promises, Proverbs 3, he's worthy of your trust and James 1 he will lead you through these trials for your good in ways far beyond what you can ask or imagine Ephesians 3 20 and 21 and that's for Emmanuel and that's for every single person who knows the truth of Jesus in their hearts gird up your fasten yourself with truth amidst the lies that the adversary wants to sell you in the middle of your struggles and then when you think about the dangerous lies that people in this world are believing that are leading to all kinds of destruction and idolatry and injustice in the world let's fight spiritual battle with not just believing truth but proclaiming truth spreading truth let's fight to show to say and to show that every single person in this world is an image bearer of god innately worthy of honor. …

Selah, Rev. Dr. Howard-John Wesley
Howard-John Wesley, 2019-12-01 · Scripture reading

… from the 46th Psalm. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear even though the earth be removed and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea, though its waters roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah. There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High. God is in the midst of her. She shall not be moved. God shall help her just at the break of dawn. The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved. He uttered his voice, the earth melted. The Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. Come before the works of the Lord who has made desolations in the earth. He makes war cease to the end of the earth. He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two. He burns the chariot in the fire. Be still and know that I am God. …
